Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:08PM (#50306897)
I don't know if it's true. I didn't program at all between 2000 and 2015 and I've been able to restart without too much effort. I forgot many things, but I found it relatively easy to recover...

I'm more worried about people that did never program and started directly with LLM support...

Re:"It works better in the app " on Friday August 28, 2026 @11:07AM (#49479694)
The actual reality is that it's impossible to have people go to a web site from a physical ad/offer/thing without using a QR (or paying Google). Google (and friends) managed to hide the URL almost totally, people don't even know that you can go somewhere without searching on google. So the options are: paying google to have your name point to you (an expensive choice depending on the actual name) or use a QR. Weirdly enough people uses QRs this way. I think the restaurants/bars menus after the pandemic only digital via QR opened this way (again, it was trendy also many years ago).
Most of the more common SQLite implementations for go require CGO and this is a pretty steep request, it's definitely more than a line in go.mod
Re:Gemini CLI on Thursday June 26, 2025 @05:24AM (#44385645)
Yeah, technically. But just everyone _normal_ just pays using Stripe often without even knowing about it. On the _walled garden_ all is so clear that my 70 years aunt is able to do it. And there is no exceptions to the rule: every subscription made through the App Store is there and it's cancellable...

30% is a robbery, and the confusion on the customer "ownership" is true, but it's not useful for the discussion to negate the advantage the _garden_ offers to the basic consumer

Re:Ladybird browser spreads its wings on Friday June 21, 2024 @04:17AM (#40747321)
The "chrome" of an app is the part surrounding the main windows, like toolbars and the such.

IIRC when Chrome appeared, the name was chosen because it was a browser without chrome (ie: it used to be just the rendering windows with the url bar on top), differently from other browsers at the time.

Well, the point I was trying to make, said in another way is that the initial success of App Store (iOS, in particular) was driven that the fact that , suddenly, users thought that was OK to pay for the software. I think that the (relative) lack of piracy and difficulty for ordinary users to install pirated software has been a key factor in the success of it: "there's an app for that, and I can't easily find it for free".

The other point I was trying to make is that the disappearance of "stand-alone" apps, not tied to a web service, is primarily driven by the fact that, this way, you can avoid piracy. You can offer a free-tier (that would be eaten by the piracy anyway) and sell (say) a synchronize, or additional features tied to a web service (so not printable).

May be it's not the only thing, but that's what (anecdotically) I hear from solo-indie-very small developers.

I fully agree with you on both the current discoverability problem and also with games piracy having a different, may be even not negative effect.

Piracy is not-impactful is not true. The disappearance of indie software that do not depend on a remote server (or that's not software on a remote server) is basically due to the inability to monetize with sales native, stand-alone, software. And that's for the piracy.

In some way, the success of the App Store towards indie/solo developers is because there was a way to sell things without the piracy easily steal your sales.

Yes, I know that "it's not stealing", "it's not theft", etc. Beside the ethical/moral conundrum of piracy, the fact is that it destroys the market for small developers.

I'm from Naples, in the south of Italy and, while pasta with seaweed is indeed not existing here (I can't even imagine why you should do that to pasta), fritter with seaweed are common, here --> cfr. https://blog.giallozafferano.it/studentiaifornelli/zeppoline...
I think the key is that this is not a VR device but an AR one. The illusion is harder to maintain in AR but if you manage it is way more tricky. The difference between VR and AR is undervalued in the discussion. imho, the ability to do a credible AR (due to superior computational power and the abundance of sensors) _could_ be the key for Vision success
Re:Switching to Fedora from Ubuntu on Thursday March 30, 2023 @04:43PM (#35378584)
If you are a developer, and you don't target iOS nor macOS you're right. Otherwise, for people that must use business or graphical (like Adobe CC) apps linux is not a viable option and between macOS and Windows well, choose your poison, but I like macOS more (at least is unix). This is said as a person that used linux, and even Solaris and freeBSD on his machine for years, when I could do it. Not everyone has the same constraints
Not OP, but for me the answer to your question is: is a tool I need. I _could_ use Windows, and absolutely not Linux/BSD (for the programs/tools I need for work), and, frankly, I don't think Windows is better.

Yes, I know that's not completely true. I _could_ use Linux (I even used Solaris on a notebook for 2 years in the past and I survived) but the cost in terms of effort, lost productivity would be higher than I'm ready to pay. It's a rational choice.

Re:What Meta Does to Retain Me on Monday May 02, 2022 @03:07AM (#31232179)
Yes and not. It's a bit like Apple, nothing is really new or cutting edge, but the packaging is smart and the UI/UX is beautiful. I think same is for multiverse, otherwise Second Life should have won already.
Re:Write it in Garamond on Wednesday February 02, 2022 @01:13PM (#30181498)
well, it's the New York _Times_ after all... it can't use Garamond. It's in the header
It's mostly the same also in Italy. A company is considered "under systematic losses" (translating directly from Italian) after 5 years of losses. It's not closed, but it's considered, basically, a vector for something that's "not business", so it gets a minimum of taxes to pay, loses some fiscal advantages, and pays more additional taxes. Startups (as in "formally registered to the startup register") are not subject to this rule, but they have other limitations (and benefits)
Re:Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US? on Tuesday September 14, 2021 @05:40PM (#28531756)
Rule in Italy is only one shot after at least 3 months (and no more of 6 months) after the first Covid-negative test.

You can embed the image inside the actual multi-part message, and it will be shown without accessing network. It is usually used for logos, signatures and the such and, afaik, can't be used for tracking mail opening.
AFS has containers to install betas on the same partition, the main partition is not polluted (and the additional volume(s) can be removed at will). cfr. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891

I'm not saying that it's "normal" not to be able to boot from external devices, I'm just answering your point

Re:Internet disrupted in Myanmar amid military coup on Monday February 01, 2021 @06:58AM (#25987892)
It is currently probably way better (USA vs. China). Especially when seen from Europe (or USA)... looking at it from the point of view of a South-American citizen probably don't give the same result... and it's not self-hate, just history

Lines seem very clear to me... they are:

You have majority (over 50%) corporate, individual, or partnership interest in the ownership or shares of another Apple Developer Program account.

Another Apple Developer Program member has majority (over 50%) corporate, individual, or partnership interest in the ownership or shares of your account.

You have ultimate decision-making authority over another Apple Developer Program account.

Another Apple Developer Program member has ultimate decision-making authority over your account.

Unless, you know, by buying ads on snowboarding gear focused sites, as the industry has done for decades in the print industry.
Re:Apple iPhone SE 2020 Camera review on Saturday July 04, 2020 @01:50PM (#23733784)
Why? I used it until a month ago, and my son still uses it. Battery changed (29€) and it's still a good phone (camera is a bit dated, but for the rest it can definitely be used). I know many people still using it (for the format).
Re:No, Safari 14 does not block Google Analytics on Thursday June 25, 2020 @03:48AM (#23637949)
I don't really know, but I can assure you we had great products before Google Analytics existed and, fwiw, an advertising industry existed before tracking.
I survived without errors from being to HN front page with Nginx and a static site (made with Hugo, iirc) on a Linode 1GB (when the plan was still existing). No CDN whatsoever.
I would be shocked...
