Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @08:50AM (#50005216)
All that AI compute and resources and they couldn't hold onto releasing the papers until a legitimate peer review was performed?

Just had to get that PR stunt out to bump their valuation.

Vibe coding math research is just next-level AI slop.

Mind you, this is a competent AI company that's making these mistakes.

I can only imagine what non-technical people are putting out in production via vibe-coded AI slop.

SSL Error: Verify return code: 34 (unhandled critical extension)
Has some undisclosed error.

Says cannot be trusted when validating via SSL checker

https://decoder.link/sslchecker/ppq.apple.com/443

Hilarious... their provisioning profile query server has an expired SSL certificate?

Are you serious Apple?

Enterprise apps distributed via MDM & signed using in-house distribution certificates are dead in the water too with the error message "Unable to Verify App" showing on start-up.

Apple's status page is showing no problems (all green).

This is a really bad look for Apple.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2025) on Wednesday November 05, 2025 @10:40PM (#45831119)
Is this a Sybase MobiLink competitor?

I was trying to find one!

I’m going to have to give this product a try!

Ask HN: Did HN just get hacked and leak passwords?

Got an email security alert from gmail about someone logging into an old forgotten gmail account with my actual password.Well, that gmail account was one I hadn't used in years as I was going to replace it with my HN profile contact email, but never did.I often create a burner gmail account for social media accounts and use the same password as the social media login.I've changed my passwords,...

It would appear the woke mind virus / DEI was deeply embedded into the core of the AI.

It refused to generate images of white people.

For example:

People would ask it to generate something like a picture of a German couple in 1820 and it would spit out images of Asian and Black couples.

Pictures of the founding fathers would also include weird things like native Americans and other ethnicities.

Other historical prompts would result in the same output - no white people.

Basically the AI went woke af.

Re:Ask HN: How Do You Budget? on Thursday December 28, 2023 @07:12AM (#38792687)
Take the opposite approach.

It’s easier to calculate how much you want to save and save it upfront then the rest of the money can be spent.

Max out 401k - money never touched your bank account

Split direct deposit so a portion or multiple portions go to your investment account and/or savings account

The rest goes into checking account to pay for bills and lifestyle expenses.

Save the money up front and never let it touch the checking account!

You can start by giving yourself some buffer into your checking account and later dialing down those numbers in your direct deposit config.

It’s much easier to do it this way and not worry about every single expense line item. Just calculate how much you think you can save and never let that money touch your checking account. Evaluate every quarter and adjust the numbers at the front accordingly.

Re:Ask HN: Where do you live? What's good or bad about it? on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @09:31AM (#38544321)
Atlanta, Georgia

Pros: No natural disasters, fairly affordable, good schools.

2-3 hour flight to the Bahamas / Caribbean.

Cons: Summer weather sucks as it is too humid and hot. No winter / snow. Proximity to beach and mountains for skiing sucks.

Cant really enjoy the outdoor weather due to the sticky humidity most time of the year.

I work while wearing costco $10 socks and have been using the same socks for 5 years.

I've made $XXYYZZ.WW while wearing these socks in 5 years.

Well, your license gave them permission to pretty much do anything. As nefarious as it may be, it is not illegal.

https://github.com/avitorio/outstatic/blob/canary/license.md

1. Burn out

2. Getting stuck on a boring project

3. Horrible culture fit

4. New exciting opportunity which consequently = more money

Sure, but a lot of poorly written spaghetti code that works is sometimes impossible to extend or add new features to without a major refactor or complete rewrite.

Currently dealing with some 13 year old objective C code for a mobile app that’s gonna require a major rewrite cause it looks like it was written by someone who should have never been writing code in the first place

Heh, the Bulgarian government is so corrupt that they are all probably fighting and trying to find a way to launder the previously seized BTC used in money laundering.
Re:Ask HN: Whatever happened to the Product Owner role? on Tuesday October 03, 2023 @09:29PM (#37759830)
and 9/10 companies still think a project manager is a product manager :D
When going on a road trip Tesla calculates the time based on the route you put into navigation.

Obviously it will give a different estimate than stop and go traffic and starting the vehicle without pre-conditioning the battery.

Tesla does a great job with their scheduling functionality that lets you pre-condition battery before you leave and even when you near a supercharger to maximize charging efficiency of the battery.

ICE vehicles have lower range as well when going uphill or exceeding the optimal speed and increasing air drag.

The estimates are based on driving on a flat road at the speed limit.

Even my Lexus SUV can get 24mpg driving on 35-45mph roads vs 16-19 in the city or going to the mountains where elevation increases.

People's understanding of range is just not quite there yet whether it's for an ICE vehicle or an EV.

Re:Kevin Mitnick has died on Thursday July 20, 2023 @11:40AM (#36802141)
May he rest in peace.

I first heard of Kevin Mitnick in the early 2000's when I was watching "The Broken" with Kevin Rose and he interviewed Mitnick in one of the episodes.

I was 14-15 years old at the time! Wow!

Re:Twitter now requires an account to view tweets on Friday June 30, 2023 @11:37PM (#36546227)
The overthinking, speculation, and wasted thoughts in the comments due to misinformed people attempting to spread unsubstantiated claims is quite shocking.

"Several hundred organizations (maybe more) were scraping Twitter data extremely aggressively, to the point where it was affecting the real user experience.

What should we do to stop that? I’m open to ideas. 5:06 PM · Jun 30, 2023"

"so @elonmusk now that twitter blocks all requests that are not logged in, tweets can no longer be embedded in most chat apps

I'd strongly suggest reconsidering the UX+growth tradeoffs made here (take note how tiktok, youtube, etc, do not need this despite much higher b/w req!)"

@elonmusk

"This will be unlocked shortly. Per my earlier post, drastic & immediate action was necessary due to EXTREME levels of data scraping.

Almost every company doing AI, from startups to some of the biggest corporations on Earth, was scraping vast amounts of data.

It is rather galling to have to bring large numbers of servers online on an emergency basis just to facilitate some AI startup’s outrageous valuation."

I agree. You lock everybody up. Cant go outside in some countries but for certain hours. The stress from losing your job too and not having income and seeing friends and family. Lack of physical exercise from staying at home and watching the news on the couch all day. It all adds up.

oh man, the nostalgia!

If you already can work remote on side gigs for your consulting firm consider moving to a low cost of living country in south/Central America, Thailand, or Eastern Europe.

No point paying living expenses in the west if you can generate a western salary remotely.

No, it’s a bunch of garbage like that other Chinese site wish.

Literally garbage consumerism to the next level shit products.

Re:If Microsoft is doing so good why layoffs? on Thursday April 27, 2023 @09:17AM (#35727623)
It’s all speculation and rumors unless you got insider knowledge of how the layoffs were organized specifically and the motivation behind them. How would you know what their strategy and goals were before and after layoffs?

Like I said this complaining of layoffs is ridiculous.

Most qualified people have no problem finding a job. I could get fired and have multiple offers within 2 weeks.

Get so good they can’t ignore you and network to make sure people know how good you are.

it’s really no different than this personal example:

I hired a lawn scaping guy after dealing with leaves and bushes by myself. The guy did a decent job the first time he serviced the yard. The subsequent times he showed up for 15 minutes trimmed the tiny grass area in front of my house and left, when he was supposed to do much more. I caught him on the ring camera and after 2-3 times of him coming by for just 15 mins to hit the yard with an edger and bill me $100 , I fired him.

Then I bought the tools and did my own yard work for a few months. I got tired of it and saw my neighbor had a hard working guy maintaining his yard. Got that guy hired and now I don’t do my own yard work anymore and the guy I hired is cheaper and more thorough when he does my landscaping.

Re:If Microsoft is doing so good why layoffs? on Wednesday April 26, 2023 @04:32PM (#35719542)
Because they’ve identified poor performers or products / teams that no longer fit the strategy or market and need to be shut down.

The answers on here are ridiculous.

Flip the question on its head - why did Microsoft hire like 30-40k people the last 3 years?

Because they were staffing for projects and teams. Some projects got shutdown so the teams / staff is no longer needed.

Depending on where your customer base is, the fraudulent transactions usually come from like the middle east, eastern europe, and other countries. See if you can track where those transactions are originating from HTTP request wise.

You might be able to just block traffic from those regions if it does not impact your business and customer base.

Not the best or cleanest solution, but when Stripe fails to handle fraud for you, you've got to get creative and hit the problem from all angles.

Somewhat related anecdote --

Executives at my company in a non-tech industry who are running a skeleton crew in the IT department are using the economy and tech industry layoffs to try and withhold bonuses and treating employees like disposable garbage.

They seem to think that the 2-3 people doing the work for 10 is OK and that somehow low key insinuating that current tech industry changes like chatGPT will replace our jobs, even though they don't know the difference between IT roles vs Software Engineer's roles and responsibilities.

I wonder if this is true for other non-tech company's IT departments where the execs are clueless in terms of how technology actually works.

If I had the financial stability to quit today and take a year off I would, hoping I can get there by end of year.

What, it’s just set theory basically
Everyone knows! This is a common scheme to get pregnant in order to avoid jail / get leniency. It’s quite common and a disgusting way to try and dodge accountability.
