Iterable (https://www.iterable.com) - San Francisco, CA

Come join Iterable. We are bringing the growth hacking tools that consumer Internet companies like Twitter/Facebook build internally to other e-businesses. We aim to build the best user growth engine on the planet. It's crazy how messaging and email usage are changing, but the technology and capabilities haven't caught up to the 21st century. Our team of hackers and thinkers is from quant finance/Twitter/Google, (we built large parts of Twitter's growth systems). One of our top level goals is to build a uniquely fun and growth oriented company culture. We pair program, design together, and generally create a learn-and-teach environment here. If you're interested in coming on board, you can help with some challenges we face:

  - Scale our messaging API
  - Design and write performant, beautiful, asynchronous interfaces
  - Write software to build machine learned user models
  - Make data visualizations for our email and user data
  - Design an immutable deployment infrastructure for our platform
Some aspects of our culture that make us different:

  - We are all very focused on self improvement
  - Our company has egalitarian and transparent values (work when you want, on what you want)
  - We are chill and empathetic people
  - The company is completely transparent
Technologies you'll work with:

  - Scala
  - ElasticSearch
  - Postgres
  - Redis
  - AngularJS
  - Play Framework
  - RabbitMQ
You'll get to work with us at our office at 5th and Market in San Francisco. If this sounds like an interesting and fun opportunity for you, please email me: girish at iterable.com

Did you start an accredited Math degree? If so, how did that work for you, and how did you get into the program?
Re:From Node.js to Go on Thursday January 29, 2015 @04:16PM (#8968879)
I wish a language with advanced types like Haskell or OCaml would have the same tooling and ease of distribution around it that Go does. I haven't built anything in Haskell/ML in a while, so if anyone has any updates on this please chime in.

What are the options for us after the week is up if we want to do it?
Re:Poll: Do you donate to charity? on Tuesday January 21, 2014 @08:27PM (#7100026)
The truth and opportunity is that donating to some charities creates disproportionately more good and well being in the world than other charities, so this is a very important question. http://www.givewell.org/ is one charity evaluator that tries to answer this with in-depth analyses. I recommend them!

Iterable (http://iterable.com) - San Francisco, CA.

Come join Iterable, the next generation email optimization company.

Email usage is changing, but the technology and capabilities haven't caught up to the 21st century. We're a small team of hackers and thinkers who are creating the next generation email optimization platform. Our team has experience at big tech companies (Twitter, Google, SIG) and we want to bring and improve the technology that powers user growth and commerce at these places to everyone. This means writing code that improves the lives of our customers (series seed and series A companies) and their millions of email subscribers.

One of our top level goals is to build a uniquely fun and growth oriented company culture. This is a journey, not a rat race. Knowledge sharing in any capacity is highly valued here -- are you interested in prediction markets or PGP encryption? Do you enjoy teaching posture techniques or purely functional data structures to others? We pair program, design together, and generally create a learn-and-teach environment here.

If you're interested in coming on board, you can help with some challenges we face: - Scale our API to beyond millions of requests - Design and write performant, beautiful interfaces - Write software to build machine learned user models - Make data visualizations for our email and user data - Design an immutable infrastructure for our platform

Some aspects of our culture that make us different: - We are all very focused on self improvement - Our company has egalitarian and transparent values: work when you want, on what you want. - We are chill and empathetic people - The company is completely transparent

You'll get to work with us at our office at Kleiner Perkins' startup incubation space in SoMa.

If this sounds like an interesting opportunity for you, please email me. -- girish at iterable.com

Blah blah blah... he can harp on the lecture system all he wants, but at the end of the day you need a couple things for "success": 1) a motivated student, 2) an interested, accessible instructor.
Re:Universities and Economic Growth on Wednesday November 25, 2009 @04:32PM (#961860)
Why do the classes you take in college HAVE to help you with your work programming? Can't you just take something because you're intellectually interested in it? Or because it has an awesome teacher, or a lecturer who is world famous, or a Nobel laureate teaching it?

As long as you're genuinely interested in what you're taking there's no reason not to take it. Not everything is about learning how to do one job that you're stuck with for the rest of your life.

Ask HN: Theoretical innovation to actual company?

Hi HN,For stuff more general than the usual web startup flow chart (i.e. come up with an idea and implement!), what is the process to from theoretical innovation to actual product? A friend has come up with a theoretical innovation that arose out of his PhD thesis that has potential for several software projects of varying scope. He believes that he can write an application that utilizes this...

Ask HN: College internships?

Hi HN. I'm a college sophomore and I'm in a quite weird position now - I started off college thinking about medical school and essentially took a bunch of bio&chem classes. However, I recently had a change of heart... I'm either going to major in physics / minor in cs, or just cram the cs major into the remaining two years. I had some CS background in high school (took the AP course,...

Ask HN: An introduction to web platforms?

Hi HN. I'm a college student studying physics. I've been pretty interested in startups for a while now, but I haven't really taken the time to truly invest myself into learning the tools required to build web apps. Would anyone be kind enough to give a quick crash course or point me in the right direction to get started? I see terms like jquery, ajax, javascript, ruby on rails, etc get chucked...

Ask HN: How to get started with photography?

Hi. I've been interested in photography for about a year now but I've never gotten around to actually doing something about it. I've looked up a couple tutorials, checked out a couple cameras, but I'm not really sure how to start. So, I turn to you all for advice. How would you advise a photography-newbie to start off? Equipment? Pointers? Thanks!
