That's the first interview test! (Take a look at the URL, it's pretty obvious why it's broken)

Granted there are some people on earth who can speak those 3 languages fluently, but it greatly diminishes the pool of available people. If you wanted to take the example to the absurd, you could just start listing more languages, and ChatGPT would happily spit out the answer translated to 100 languages in a few seconds. No person could do that.

Also, I believe doctor of credit is not funded by affiliate links like most sites that list this stuff are (including the GP link, I believe)
The integration is really cool, and it seems like this would be a powerful tool, but I think I'd be fighting against the main thing you want to do (I don't want to reschedule stuff after my Sunday planning session, with only very few exceptions).

Thanks for the suggestion though, and good luck!

Ask HN: Help me find a Weekly Calendar based TODO app that was mentioned here

After trying many different things, I use a series of 5 Google Keep notes titled "Monday," "Tuesday" etc with recurring reminders set so they pop up on that day. This means I can plan my week on Sunday, and then only see the relevant day's lists, so I don't get distracted by the rest of the week's tasks.I remember reading a list of people's favorite TODO apps (or maybe productivity apps, or...

I don't know anything about Kotaku, but I read that same article and thought it was pretty clearly a tongue-in-cheek faux investigative article and laughed at it.

Asus Zenphone 10 is a bit bigger than the 13 mini, but is reasonably small and otherwise well regarded

I don't see the QA posting. Am I just missing it or is it elsewhere?
Very cool! I listen to WMSE (Wisconsin - Milwaukee School of Engineering - https://www.wmse.org/) and WSUW (UWisconsin Whitewater - https://917theedge.weebly.com/) pretty regularly. It'd be great to see those added, and enjoying finding some new ones with this!
Re:The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger on Thursday August 11, 2022 @10:48AM (#32426559)
This seems like a classic example of taking one small part of a larger trend that agrees with the viewpoint you came in with, and massively overinflating its impact.

Trucks have been getting bigger since long before 2008, including light trucks. The Ranger's platform was ancient by the time it was retired -- it was going to go regardless. It does seem that the author has correctly picked out one of the many factors pushing things in that direction, but also during the time frame in question (2008-2020) overall American vehicle fuel economy increased (see the EIA's total energy consumption report). I realize that wasn't the direct point the author was making, but it seems like an important note.

The author's weird insistence on the "own the libs" snark really takes away from the impact of what this could have been -- a reminder of the importance to consider unintended consequences when rulemaking.

I was lucky enough to take Remzi's OS course. Both he and his wife are excellent teachers, and really truly caring people. I haven't kept up with him since school, but he was the best professor I had and it wasn't close.
I just tried this out this week! It isn't going to work for my needs (I like having payee names to track past expenses), but it looks like great software, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to people.
Do you support searching which country a movie is available to stream in?

For example the movie It is available in Netflix Austria (but not many other Netflix regions), but to find that, I searched It, then randomly picked countries from the dropdown list. It looks like the API has country as a required field as well, so to do this programmatically it would be similar.

Seconding this recommendation, it is an excellent book about a hard topic. Just wanted to add that it is a hard read if you're in the middle of actual severe health problems with you or loved ones.

That sums up the WoW Classic (and I'm sure many other gaming communities) a little too perfectly.

Interested in the QA position here, but I didn't see it listed on the site. Do you have a link to it?

Is the QA position still open? I don't see a link here or on your website (or is that the application?)
Re:Stock Market Returns Are Anything but Average on Friday April 30, 2021 @09:53AM (#26993483)
The point of the trivia is arguing against trying to time the market. Lots of people predict crashes are coming, so shift money from equities to cash or bonds. Unless you can time it perfectly (you can't), it is better to hold because you don't know when the best or worst days are.

Re:Ask HN: Advice for finding an entry-level remote job? on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @06:45PM (#26173467)
Totally agree you can get pigeonholed, but my read of the OP is that they want a job that can support their family first, and that development was one of the things they were considering, not that development was a goal in and of itself. My thought is that QA is a solid career, and that once they are established, and get a support structure for their family, if they want to become a dev they can work towards that from a position of strength, rather than a position of near-crisis.
Re:Ask HN: Advice for finding an entry-level remote job? on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @05:41PM (#26172799)
I'd highly encourage you to continue learning to code. You might also consider software QA. It is also easy to do remotely, pays well, and the learning curve is a bit lower. If you learned selenium, the ability to navigate a SQL database, postman to test REST APIs, and some testing terms and methods you'd be well on your way. The first job will be the hardest to get, but once you have that, remote jobs are readily available.

Obviously you didn't lay out all the reasons why you couldn't move, and I don't expect you to, but I'd also REALLY strongly consider the implications of what a steady, well paying job can do for a family. Relocation opens up a world of opportunities for you, which opens up support and services for your family (paid and otherwise) that just aren't available in the poorest places. You don't have to be away from the people you care for if you can bring them along. I understand that leaving a support structure, even a flawed one, may not be possible, but think about that REALLY hard before you rule it out, especially if you're young. Some initial pain may transform lives. There's a reason so may people move away from the places they grow up. Plus, if you move for your first job, you always have the option of moving back after a year or two if it doesn't work out once you've established yourself in the career, which would make finding remote work much easier.

That is almost never true (see https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/estates/the-gift-tax/L1...). Gift taxes are nearly always the givers burden.
