Re:Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @01:28PM (#31657548)
I used to believe that but have started to serious doubt it. Some counter-arguments:

1. It's reasoning a'la "It's economically inefficient therefore it's less likely to happen". In my opinions, governments are absolute experts in implementing economically nonsensical policies, international conflicts included.

2. Any link between nations can be weaponized, i.e. imposing tariffs, banning imports/exports, and so on. The greater your dependency on me the more ways I have to harm you.

3. Such weaponization will naturally harm your own citizens but you, as a decision maker, will bear very little cost.

4. The easier it is for me to replace you with an alternative the more likely I am to use that against you -- this is classic BATNA. You don't like my export quota? So what, I've got more interest than I can handle and you can build your batteries without lithium if you don't like that.

It's much more convenient if you have a system for doing groceries. Compare visiting 2 stores in walking distance (~ 90 minutes total) vs putting a predefined list into your basket and optionally add or remove a few items (~ 10 minutes).

What did you build the website with? It looks really nice and I’m looking for something I could use with my project. [1]

I didn’t realize there’s a pro version so thank you for posting this. I’m going to give it a try and will pay happily if it improves my workflow.
Re:Ask HN: At what point do you have 2 pages in your resume? on Thursday March 31, 2022 @03:42PM (#30871454)
I’ve prepared a three-page version with the intent of reducing it down to a page or two per application. I ended up using the full version in all applications with project specific highlights in each.

I’ve never had a one-page resume. It was two pages until recently. I’ve played a lot of roles (backend, front end, kernel, system level, infrastructure, product design, leadership, consulting) and a longer resume makes it easier to show that versatility — its my major selling point.

I think what to put there and how to phrase it is MUCH more important than length.

Re:The Financial Times’ 404 page on Sunday October 24, 2021 @06:15PM (#28982435)
I love that kind of attention to detail. It's easy to treat the 404 page as something not needing any thought at all so it's refreshing to see some still care about such seemingly irrelevant details.
Re:Amazon warehouse employee in Poland dies at work on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @05:41AM (#28928709)
According to https://kanbantool.com/kanban-guide/water-spider:

> A water spider is a Lean production personnel role centered around timely and accurate stock replenishment. The water spider team member is similar to a mobile Kanban system that refills the production line with the required materials to maintain a steady flow.

Re:Amazon warehouse employee in Poland dies at work on Wednesday October 20, 2021 @05:35AM (#28928664)
Quick summary for those who can't read Polish:

- He was a water spider in an Amazon warehouse.

- On 5 Sep, 2021 he asked his team lead to assign extra help because he and his colleagues couldn't keep up with the amount of work. An argument between them ensued but some help was assigned at the end of the day.

- In the morning of 6 Sep, 2021 he felt stabbing in his chest and had difficulties breathing. He asked the team lead to call a medic (there were medical care worked employed by Amazon) but he refused and offered to walk him to the medic instead.

- He passed out on his way to the medic and never regained consciousness.

- An investigation was opened on 7 Sep, 2021.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think publishers are trying to have the cake and eat it too. They want their content to be discoverable in search engines. They also want readers to pay for it. Given how search engines currently work this is a self-contradictory model.

I imagine search engine could offer publishers an API to send content for indexing without having to publish it. Google and others could even charge publishers for that and then published could ask readers for subscriptions.

Re:Juno Solves 39-Year Old Mystery of Jupiter Lightning on Wednesday June 06, 2018 @05:02PM (#17251102)
You got the formula wrong. The surface area of the sphere is 4πr².
Re:Juno Solves 39-Year Old Mystery of Jupiter Lightning on Wednesday June 06, 2018 @05:01PM (#17251091)
A given amount of light emitted by the Sun is spread over a sphere of radius r. As the light propagates the radius gets bigger and bigger. The light per area is proportional to 1 / 4πr². If the radius grows 5 times then the area of the sphere grows 25 times.

I was puzzled by the difference in ETR in Q42015 and Q42016 (5% vs 22%). What happened in Q42015 that made the ETR so low?

I’m a full-stack engineer and have some availability in my calendar. Example results companies I worked for got: - Smaller risk of unwarranted automatic payouts (the total payouts volume measured in millions of EURs a year) - Ability to enter another market and implement features customers requested. - QA feedback cycle reduced from weeks to minutes. - Support overhead reduced from 40 to 4 hours a month. - Less unwarranted payouts in an online for-money gaming site. If this sounds like something your company could benefit from please send me an email to [email protected]. Also, I’m happy to provide info — feel free to ask here or over email.

> The rich were meant to have the most leisure time. The working poor were meant to have the least.

Only in fairy tales. The conclusion in economic textbooks is always the same: if you're rich the opportunity cost of having a day off are _much_ higher so the more you can create in an hour the _less_ likely it is you'll have a day off. That's why CEOs of larger companies have assistants or, in case of mega corps, helicopters or planes.

Practical conclusion: if you're an independent professional schedule a fixed number in a year of weeks for vacations. If you plan for it you'd be less likely to hesitate than when making the decision on a week-by-week basis. (Said a person who had longer vacations about 5 years ago)
