Re:Keybase iOS Has a Backdoor? on Sunday September 29, 2019 @07:25PM (#21110299)
I think you’re right. If I remember correctly I did not have a stellar address until I clicked the ‘Wallet’ button in the Keybase app. That action and the device it was issued from was recorded in my chainlink on Feb 15, 2019 .. which sounds about right.

I also remember feeling a bit tricked, because I wasn’t aware that by clicking that button a stellar address would be created and permanently linked to me.

This is directed at all non-indigenous people. We all do have connections to what is happening in the Amazon. Our way of life is part of the problem.
Re:Google's Captcha in Firefox vs. in Chrome on Monday June 10, 2019 @02:20PM (#20149337)
I just wasted ~15 minutes on doing the disqus login captcha under different conditions .. turns out that as soon as uMatrix is enabled (and blocks 18 cookies from google.com and 5 more from www.google.com), it starts to act up and get annoying..at least for me.

It then takes between 1 minute and 1 minute 30 to get past the recaptcha when blocking those cookies - and I was certain to be 100% correct in most cases and it kept asking me to solve more and more ..

most of the time spent solving the captchas is from the countless '4s fade ins' via inline style when cookies are blocked (as opposed to 1s fade ins via css, when cookies are set).

I'm curious why they would add 3s to the fade in if their cookies are blocked .. does that help to fight off bots, or does google just want to punish me for blocking their cookies?

Good to know. I experienced the same when I set up algo on Scaleway recently. I considered Digital Ocean as an alternative, but ended up using Hetzner Cloud (which I now prefer, since it is cheaper and based in Germany). No access issues with appleid.apple.com anymore.
Re:Gitea: Open source, self-hosted GitHub alternative on Sunday May 06, 2018 @11:44AM (#17006797)
I have made a tool with which I can easily deploy and backup/restore dockerized web apps. Configuring and deploying gitea (or any other service I integrated so far) only takes a couple of minutes. Services are run behind an nginx reverse proxy container and Let’s Encrypt certificates are automatically issued if you choose so during config. The only requirement is docker.

I have been using it for about a year and recently put it on github, because I found it useful enough to share.

You an find it here https://github.com/chaosbunker/dockerbunker

Maybe not exactly what you are looking for, since I am not familiar with the discourse installer, but maybe interesting for someone? I’m happy about some feedback, since I never actively shared this until now.

Re:Friendica – A Decentralized Social Network on Thursday April 05, 2018 @08:45AM (#16764327)
I think many people that are moving away from Facebook move away from social networks in general. Personally, I am not interested at all in a Facebook replacement. I gave a couple a try, but quickly realized that spending time on these social networks is even more boring than Facebook, especially if none of your friends are on there.. and therefor a total waste of my time. If I need to communicate with friends I do this “directly” via WhatsApp or email.
Even if they offered a delete button any time before GDPR comes into effect I would not trust and use it. I also don't like the idea of using one of those chrome extensions mentioned here. To me, currently this is synonymous to hiding everything they have on me from myself.

But doing this after May 25 would mean I definitely want it gone for good and if they don't fully delete what I manually remove, I expect them to get themselves into trouble.

General Data Protection Regulation. I can't wait for it ... and to see how facebook handles all delete requests.
Porn == Books? I don’t understand how you can make that comparison .. and in this context.
> “Do not publish sexually explicit or pornographic images or videos. Writing about adult topics is permitted as long as it is not accompanied by sexually explicit images or videos, or any material that promotes or depicts unlawful or inappropriate sexual acts with children or animals. Additionally, we do not allow content that drives traffic to commercial pornography.

> We do allow naturalistic and documentary depictions of nudity (such as an image of a breastfeeding infant), as well as depictions of nudity that serve a clear educational, scientific, or artistic purpose.”

I don’t understand the fuss being made. It is clearly stated that sexual content is not allowed.

Just because sharing pornography isn’t illegal does not mean that it should be allowed on every platform on which it is possible.

Instead of violating TOS of a service they could just use a service that doesn’t prohibit pornography?

I abandoned Facebook instead of deleting my account.

I treat Facebook like a big phone book now and left a public status on my profile with an email address that forwards mail to my real email address for people that want to get in touch with me.

The main reason I did not delete my account is that there is one other person with exactly my name and very questionable values, judging the public content of his profile. This really sucks. My name is not common and unfortunately he married a distant cousin of mine and now has my name.

Now I don’t like the idea of people looking for me accidentally getting in touch with him thinking they are contacting me. Unlikely with his current profile picture in place, but still a possibility in the future.

To change the image, click the image you want to change, then click in the left column the icon for "Background & Border" .. i guess the icon is supposed to resemble an image, but it's not the best fit in my opinion.
Re:Long Term Depression Permanently Changes the Brain on Thursday March 01, 2018 @04:29PM (#16496542)
And changing location can make it a lot easier to actually changing the focus. The only question is how you "bring the changed focus home". It's easy to redefine/-invent yourself when you are removed from the environment in which you suffer, but it does not solve the problem. What it does though, is help you realize that your suffering is not permanent and that it is possible to overcome it. The real work comes when you return to the "old" environment. Personally, after having been away for 5 years I got sucked back into "my old self" quickly after my return and I had to consciously close a few doors, let go of some friendships and have the courage to put myself out there again and trust that I am "ok" and that what i need comes to me. It's an ongoing process. Saying "yes" to what comes to me also helps create pleasant experiences for myself.

Thanks for the Link to the book, I put it on my list!

I have read "Relaxation Response" a few years back (https://www.amazon.com/Relaxation-Response-Herbert-Benson/dp...) and shortly after have practiced this method every day for 6 weeks with my partner. We did this by listening to the meditation "Bring Mindfulness to Your Day"[0] early in the morning and i recall this being a beautiful period of serenity for both of us. Highly recommend the meditation - her voice alone is incredibly calming, plus: it gave a good overview of different meditation techniques.

[0] This is the first track on Olivia Hoblitzelles meditation CD "Relaxing Mind and Body with the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine" which can be found here https://www.amazon.com/Relaxing-Mind-Benson-Henry-Institute-... and on itunes

Re:Long Term Depression Permanently Changes the Brain on Thursday March 01, 2018 @11:53AM (#16493637)
Well, I think it is safe to assume that Long Term Happiness changes the brain "permanently" in the same manner.

How about this: the brain is ever changing. Our previous states of consciousness manifest in our brain, which can be observed when we look at it.

Re:How to Learn Piano with Technology on Wednesday February 28, 2018 @07:40AM (#16482569)
My main reason for learning to play the piano is being able to compose or better express myself through music. I was "intuitively" learning to play the piano for 2-3 years, going through periods in which I would just sit at the piano and play the keys I liked, find the keys that corresponded with the sounds in my head and just letting go and having my hands move in the directions they wanted to. I got pretty cool results and loved the depth of my music, but I realized that I needed a teacher to make the next step.

Being guided by a teacher was invaluable and I recommend it to everyone. Mine focused on improvisation and music theory and i realy loved it. I was moving forward much faster than on my own. Unfortunately I lost trust in my teacher, after finding a little song on his youtube channel (he has a channel on which he teaches stuff with synthesia videos) that he shared a week after my first session with him, which resembled very much what I had been working on at home and shown him. I was really bummed out, never had the guts to ask him how that happened and stopped returning, because he kept asking me to play stuff that I worked on at home...and eventually I stopped playing alltogether.

After reading this article I got excited again about piano playing. Just found this awesome channel with lots of high quality synthesia teaching videos, including one of my favorite songs (Ab Ovo by Joep Beving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qRV68k3-jo )

Re:How to sell a $300 chocolate bar on Friday February 23, 2018 @01:24PM (#16448172)
Reasonably priced chocolate by people that want to make a change and help the people harvesting get a fair share of the profit that come to mind are “Tony Chocolony”, “FairAfric” and “Madécasse”. I really like how the individual pieces of tony chocolony bars are very unequally devided...
Re:Finding Pwned Passwords with 1Password on Friday February 23, 2018 @10:48AM (#16447007)
I tried to convince my father to use a password manager and tried to explain that using the same 8 letter password for 75% of services is incredibly risky, but i got so much resistance from him .. in the end he wanted me to send him an article on why a password manager would be good. When I looked for something I could send him and thought about what I need to do to help him transition to using a password manager I realized that even though there are great services out there are I don’t want to be responsible for messing with his current way of doing stuff. So I let it go.

I use keepassXC (actually MacPass, which is brilliant and has an HTTPConnecter plugin that can talk to the Firefox addon keepasshttp) and it works great. Maybe not as fancy as 1P etc but free and open source. On iOS I use MiniKeePass which also works well.

This is the setup that I was going to suggest to him. Personally I find it not that complicated, just needs some time to get used to the routines.

Re:Finding Pwned Passwords with 1Password on Friday February 23, 2018 @10:06AM (#16446685)
I still don’t get why someone using a password manager would make up passwords themselves instead of randomly generating long and strong passwords...

The way they implemented this is nice, but seems a bit pointless to me.

> Saving the environment didn't matter, but 5p does? People didn't know plastic was bad before? They didn't care?

i think it simply does not register, until something flips the switch. "money" is a powerful trigger. people pay special attention to what it is connected to.
