News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I appreciate it
> If people try to doxx you, report them to the police without hesitation for harassment (and enhancements, if your local jurisdiction specifically outlaws doxxing). I cannot stress this enough.

I don't know who these people are, but it's 99% certain they don't live in the same country as I do.

I can't see how reporting this to my local little police force will do anything.

> You could file a complaint to the California attorney general

Does it matter if I'm not in California? (or even the USA?)

> It is mentioned in the site FAQ that they don't delete accounts.

I found another post [1] where someone was asking about account deletion and the linked part of the FAQ says:

We try not to delete entire account histories because that would gut the threads the account had participated in. However, we care about protecting individual users and take care of privacy requests every day, so if we can help, please email [email protected]. We don't want anyone to get in trouble from anything they posted to HN. More here (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23623799)"

I think protecting my young family from DOXing is a pretty valid reason.

Tell HN: Hacker News will not delete my account – is that legal?

Hi All,I've been a member here for a good many years, but due to a couple of factors, I need to step away.- It will be better for my mental health.- I have a large online presence, and I'm aware of multiple people trying to dox me. I have a young family now, and my comment history on HN is too revealing. Here is a 90 page forum thread of people discussing when I am going to die, and betting on...

> If democratic governments had reacted faster to crush and mute vaccine protesters hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people would still be alive today.

They did in Australia, and they did save a lot of lives.

The USA had 1,219,487 deaths for 346.4 million people (3520 deaths per million) [1]

Australia had 24,414 deaths for 26.8 million people (910 deaths per million) [1]

If Australia had the same rate of deaths as the USA, then 94,336 people would have died from covid. Therefore Australia's "draconian" COVID policies saved the lives of 69,900 people, which is 0.26% of the entire population.

Anyone who doesn't like this should think about which members of their immediate family they want included in that 70,000 deaths.

Based on polls, we're headed for exactly the same kind of leader as our southern neighbour, and it scares the shit outta me.
Since the trucker protest it has come to light the entire thing was paid for by political interests from the USA, trying to push THEIR political agenda onto Canadians. [1][2][3]

It was a politically motivated protest run by people from the USA on Canadian soil.

Political protesting by citizens about things their own government is doing is good and we need it.

Political protests by foreign countries is NOT good for democracy, and I personally feel Trudeau was protecting Canada's interests when he tried to shut it down any way he could.

Actually I wish he had been more heavy handed.

How would you like your government to handle a political protest funded by Russians or North Koreans shutting down a couple of your major cities?

> There is still out-of-network healthcare in many countries with universal healthcare

Can you provide links?

I've personally used the healthcare systems in Australia and Canada for two decades each, and also for a short time in the UK. I've never heard of this.

Lying and breaking the law are ok as long as everyone keeps making money.
> And an entire genre of concierge medicine in America caters to rich Europeans (alongside rich Middle Easterners and Asians).

Yes, the systems in America favor the rich.

Re:As Gen X Nears Retirement, Many Fear They Can't Afford It on Monday January 06, 2025 @02:24AM (#42608493)
I’ve been living on less than $40k a year my entire life. I’ve spent years driving around the world, snowboarding, hiking, camping.

I work the least amount possible to make it happen.

When my parents were getting close to retirement Dad an I ran the numbers a hundred different ways. I think the experts said they’d need $100k a year, and no matter what we did we couldn’t get it over $60k. Now in retirement it’s less than $50k.

I don’t know how people spend so much

Absolutely you are 100% correct.

Socialized healthcare is not perfect.

But it is much, much better that what the US has now. Every other developed country spends vastly less and gets much better health outcomes. [1]

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Adopt socialized healthcare now, even though it is imperfect, and then work on improving it as time goes on. That is the path to making stuff better.

[1] https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/life-expectancy-vs-health...

It seems like Americans have a knack for coming up with the most convoluted ways of accessing healthcare that are still expensive and inconvenient. Your idea still require paying out of pocket, requires taking unpaid time off work, flights, relying on the healthcare system of a foreign country and more.

That is the worst possible "healthcare" situation I can imagine.

Dozens of countries have shown you pay a lot less and get much better outcomes [1] when you just provide healthcare to everyone all the time, the same way high school, roads and street lights are provided.

Why wouldn't you want that? Why on earth would you think flying to some foreign country is a better solution?

That is an interesting way of looking at things. Netflix adding a cache has absolutely no impact on what any competitor does, or the quality of their service. It will function precisely the same the day before and the day after a Netflix cache is installed.

Actually at the very large ISP I worked at customers saw better performance because the back haul wasn’t congested with Netflix traffic.

One third of all donations on GoFundMe are for medical expenses. [1] the very vast majority of that must be Americans.

I’m staggered how many Americans are steadfastly against socialized healthcare for all, but immediately turn to GoFundMe in desperation when their insurance tells them to take a hike.

I can’t help thinking “just do that for everyone”

It’s worrying when you get downvoted on HN for telling the truth [1]

[1] https://theguardian.com/sport/2022/oct/05/buffalo-bills-new-...

The way things are going I fear the day will come you’ll get downvoted for saying the earth is round or that men walked on the moon.

Most of it is just boring old upkeep and maintenance.

Slow and steady progress. They’re just about to go big in Vegas, with tunnels the length of the strip.

Sure, but if the threatened tariffs come in, that nearby market will drop considerably. The EU is also a bigger market than the US. 440mil vs. 340mil.

Thanks for the info.

> just shy of 2 hours the level was at 5%

Ouch. That is unworkable for me, and would be very hard to deal with.

> For resolution via the laptop screen is 1366x768

Oh wow, that is a very low resolution, and wouldn't be good enough for editing photos and video.

> I always use the T430 plugged in.

I'm always shocked to see this. What is the point of a laptop you just use plugged in? Lower quality (and res) screen, bad thermals, lack of cheap expansion, and you're just tied to a desk anyway. It seems a basic desktop would run rings around it.

Which is exactly what Australia could do if it made a bunch of steel.

Re:A marriage of solar energy and farming on Saturday January 04, 2025 @05:39AM (#42593911)
Here in BC Canada we don't get paid anything for feed-in, but we do get credit on our bill - so 1 kWh in during the day means I can use 1kWh at night without paying anything. We have 6.8kW on the roof, and it looks like over 12 months it will cover our needs.

It means I'll never have a bill, and if I get too much credit (negative bill), I'll just get a used electric car. I'm not unhappy with that situation.

Re:China is the manufacturing superpower on Saturday January 04, 2025 @05:32AM (#42593890)
Thanks, I've never seen that quote. 100% spot on.

Sadly as true today as it apparently was back then.

Re:China is the manufacturing superpower on Saturday January 04, 2025 @03:49AM (#42593485)
FWIW, I’m an Aussie who went back during covid for the first meaningful stretch in 20 years. Explored the who country.

I saw with my own eyes what you’re talking about and you are spot on. It’s depressing and sad to see how Australia can’t organize a free one in a brothel, is stuck in the past and has no real interest or plan on how to improve anything at all.

Their problem is life is pretty good, so they’re not interested in a bit of work to make it incredible. Like you said, a modest sovereign wealth fund could easily let every Aussie work 4 or even three days a week. Or more solar, or making use of all the uranium or one of dozens of things

How’s the battery life? Going days without thinking about where my charger is can be really nice.

What resolution does the screen run?
