Re:How I Got to the App Store Top with a Simple Currency App on Monday February 23, 2015 @03:23PM (#9096763)
Bullshit. Luck is luck. No one can predict the future, and not everyone gets the same opportunities as everyone else.
Re:Warning: Wi-Fi Blocking Is Prohibited on Wednesday January 28, 2015 @07:25PM (#8963558)
Right, of course they have the right to prevent me from connecting to their network. But as I understand the FCC advisory, they do not have the right to stop me from using my own personal cellular hotspot, for example.
Re:Warning: Wi-Fi Blocking Is Prohibited on Wednesday January 28, 2015 @06:49PM (#8963364)
I want to know the answer to this question as well; my university purposefully blocks non-authorized networks.
Re:Show HN: The static, static site generator on Monday May 19, 2014 @12:24PM (#7768241)
This is an awesome idea, and looks like it is very well executed. I have two suggestions:

- Add some sparse html tags (i.e. a basic doctype/body), which can help with search engine parsing.

- You'll notice that for a few milliseconds on page load, the text is shown before the JS rendering takes over. This can probably be solved via Javascript, just find a way to cache or pre-load the pages.

If they offer a video/audio streaming service, what happens if I upload an mp4 of a copyrighted movie, even if I own it? Do they check files to see if they are copyrighted? If they do, will files be deleted automatically or will notice be given?
Re:Ask YC: Are the intern application results out? on Monday March 31, 2014 @09:52PM (#7505673)
What school?
Re:Ask YC: Are the intern application results out? on Monday March 31, 2014 @08:33PM (#7505421)
And I just got this email:

Thank you for applying to intern at a YC company. Unfortunately we weren't able to find a position for you this time.

Since it's our first time matching interns with YC companies, we're beta testing the program with just a small number of companies. Based on the high volume of high quality applications (over 1600) we received, we hope to expand this program in the future. We hope you'll apply again.

Rejected again. Unfortunately I don't have the prestige of MIT, Stanford, Harvard, or other top schools to carry my application through.

Re:Put.io on Tuesday February 04, 2014 @12:23AM (#7175675)
I will also heartily voice my love of this service. It has totally changed the way I view movies and TV shows.

I'm a technically-inclined person, but I really don't want to spend hours fiddling with torrents. The instant torrent completion is an absolutely killer feature. The UI is easy to use and dead simple. The developers regularly update the site and let us know when there are disruptions.

I'm a "broke" college student, and to be honest, out of all of the online services I pay money for, this is the one I think the least about before purchasing.

Re:Apple just updated without asking and locked my iPhone on Saturday October 05, 2013 @09:38PM (#6502751)
Had the same issue. I had to boot to DFU, and only then was I able to hit "Restore" in iTunes to download iOS 7.0.2 (non-beta).

There's a great one for PHP, it's called PHP. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3821125

I know exactly what you mean- I use this free app called 30/30 on my iPhone (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/30-30/id505863977?mt=8), and it works great for a productivity cycle, e.g. rotating between focusing and doing something relaxing. I imagine it would be pretty good for workouts as well.
Re:What Really Happened When Facebook Bought Instagram on Monday May 06, 2013 @07:36AM (#5661824)
Oh please. Spare us the jealousy insinuations, and stop perpetuating the myth that if entrepreneurs are actually worth anything and work hard, it is guaranteed that they will swiftly become inundated with success.

Sometimes there are no "lessons that can be learned from success stories like this". Believe it or not, for every Instagram, there's a hundred startups with founders that are just as smart and try just as hard, but don't make the cut. Do the founders of Instagram deserve their success? Sure! Should we pat them on the back and "celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit"? Absolutely. But let's not fall over ourselves praying to the success gods while we forget to work on our own products.

> If I could build Instagram and sell it for $1b I sure as hell would

Bullshit. Maybe you could! All you need is hard work, the skills to get there, and yes, a good amount of luck. But let's not pretend you, or the founders of Instagram, are destined for success because you're special or you "knew" your ideas would kick off. Look up hindsight bias in the dictionary.

Ask HN: Any Summer 2013 Internships?

I'm a web/mobile software engineer and undergraduate CS student at an engineering university. I've submitted my resume to several startup companies, but it's quite difficult to find open positions. I really want to work as an intern this summer, and I figured it would be helpful for other people to see a list of available internships. Thanks!

Re:U.S. health is lousy compared with peer nations, report says on Thursday January 10, 2013 @01:38PM (#5038816)
What kind of point are you trying to make?

> And yet people from around the world fly here every day to have critical surgeries performed by the world's top doctors in state of the art facilities.

People fly to many first-world countries for medical care, including "Canada and Europe". Yes, if people have vast sums of money, they can receive excellent medical treatment in the US (as they could in many countries).

However, that's not the problem though, is it. The problem is that in general, most Americans fall behind in health compared to other first-world nations.

> but there needs to be some method of exclusion when demand is high and supply is low

Are you arguing that the state of health of the majority of the country is irrelevant as long as high-income earners can receive the best medical care?

Re:All My Life I’ve Been Told I Was Special. It Was A Lie. on Saturday January 05, 2013 @02:54PM (#5013794)
Hey, I'm an RPI student too. I think fundamentally your feelings of "fake achievement" come down to the fact that job offers, internships, fame, etc don't spawn from going to MIT or any other university: it's what you create that matters. College isn't a guarantee of anything: it's just a great opportunity to learn a ton of stuff if you put your mind to it.

Sidenote: I saw this post in your profile, "How can I learn to code in a practical environment?" (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4326920). I'm someone that comes from the practical side of things, in terms of software engineering. Feel free to send me an email if you'd like to discuss.

It hasn't, change the resulting language to English and you'll see the issue is still occuring.
Re:IRecognition: I am no longer Apple's Target Market on Thursday December 06, 2012 @05:47AM (#4881253)
> You are about unit sales now. You need more and more consumers to want to get the latest Apple device. I get it. I don’t agree with it, but that is where you are now.

This author seems personally hurt by the fact that Apple rapidly releasing new devices, as if he feels that he is being obligated to purchase the latest products as soon as they come out and doesn't want to.

Is there a small, vocal minority of the Apple fanbase that has to have the latest thing? Certainly. But the average user does not, and has no need to upgrade their Macbook Air just because a new one comes out a year later. In fact, I've had mine for a year and a half, and I have no need or desire to upgrade anytime soon.

> I didn’t jump at the iPhone 5. I wasn’t in-line on day one like I was with the iPhone 3 and iPhone 4. I am unsure why I just didn’t care anymore.

Great, you don't need to care! Before the iPhone was released, would you have stood in line for a phone at all? I know people who still use the iPhone 3G and have no issues, because they don't need a retina display or the ability to run intense games, they just want a phone that works.

Either this author:

(1) Wants to have bleeding-technology all the time but is offended by the fact that he would have to pay for it often, or (2) Is so brainwashed by the blogomania surrounding Apple that he is unsatisfied with the fact that the company keeps fairly rapid release cycles, therefore causing his products to technically be "older versions".

Re:Customize Twitter Bootstrap To Not Look Bootstrap-y on Friday August 24, 2012 @11:36AM (#4428058)
It's been said here before, but I'm fairly sure the only people "disappointed" and "annoyed" at the many sites using Bootstrap are web developers. Of course we notice UI frameworks because it's our job to create websites.

However, the vast majority of users don't give a half a cent about what UI framework the site is using, let alone know what a front-end toolkit is. All they notice is that it is easy for them to interact with the app, probably much easier than if the developer had coded it. In fact, the site is probably built sooner anyway since the developer didn't have to spend the time to create a UI by themselves.

Re:Portal game in CoffeeScript on Saturday May 26, 2012 @06:36PM (#4028594)
Very clever implementation. One thing I would comment though is, it's rather irritating to have the figure constantly moving left or right. It think it would be better if the figure stopped once hands were released from the keyboard.

Not sure if that's the intended functionality, but that's what happens in Chrome for Mac Version 20.0.1132.17 beta.

I understand how you are experiencing problems like this with your personal television, but the situation is different with the Hobbit.

> Why show a mere 24 frames per second when we can magically build, or interpolate, new in-between frames and show 120 or even 240 frames per second?

The problem you are experiencing is "interpolation"- or, inserting extra frames that the movies was not intended to show.

The Hobbit is a movie that runs natively at 48 frames per second. Natively, as in the movie theatre will not have interpolation because 48 fps is the rate the film was originally shot in.

Perhaps the negative reactions are simply because most people aren't accustomed to seeing insanely high resolutions and frame rates in the cinema.

When I first got a high-definition plasma TV (which replaced my 20+ year old CRT), I felt the exact same way: as if all my movies were ruined, because they looked like documentaries. Now it feels like a degraded experience to watch poorer quality films. Perhaps the audiences of 2032 will feel the same about 48 fps/5k resolution.

> "Our communities are wildly different from language to language, so much so that idioms even contradict each other..."

> "The way Clojure developers work is very different than the way C developers do..."

This couldn't be more true, and makes the $200,000 investment goal a heck of lot more reasonable. Imagine the difference between developing and testing HTML5 games with Javascript and creating business CRUD apps with Rails. It's very ambitious when you think about it, which is why I'm just as eager to see how this project evolves in the next couple of months.

Light Table has a huge potential to be dynamically multilingual. Each of these languages and platforms have vibrantly unique communities, and being able to speak to all of them will be the "thing" that makes it worth using.

Re:Show HN: Filepicker.io - dead simple file uploads on Thursday April 19, 2012 @03:51PM (#3864773)
I don't have a problem with it. It's a MVP so the people trying it out won't be using IE either.
Re:Show HN: Filepicker.io - dead simple file uploads on Thursday April 19, 2012 @03:47PM (#3864759)
Secondly, when building a simple fun tool to be used on websites, is a four-image team bio with MIT written in capital letters all over it necessary?
