Re:Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:42PM (#50307449)
This is pretty interesting given that the entire video game industry, indie developers excluded, suffers from a serious case of sequalitis.
The good thing is that you can keep the free credit monitoring services running until you die, because inevitably a new security breach will offer you free credit monitoring before the previous one expires. /s

I think I currently have two overlapping ones going.

You off-source it to Anthropic, of course.

> I'd be kind of surprised if OpenAI were really doing this deliberately because a whole bunch of their execs come from Meta, and all those guys learned the hard way.

The lesson they've learned is that if the profit from an activity is X, and the sanctions/reputational hit costs less than X, it's full steam forward.

I think a better solution would be to force retailers to submit accurate pricing information to price comparison aggregators preferably in real-time straight from their inventory system, and give consumers easy access to live price comparison data. If everyone knew how much your retailer is screwing with you, surveillance economy would cease to exist.

I bet there are an army of lawyers in those states preparing class action lawsuits right now.

I'm pretty sure Attorney Generals will also join the fray in due time.

This crap needs to be shut down hard.

I don't know a single company where an executive would be downloading training data themselves.

The only exception would be a very small startup, which isn't the case here, or all IT, admin and engineering staff told the company they aren't doing anything illegal for Zuckerberg. That's not going to happen at Meta either.

Expat...as in Finnish citizen living abroad.
It's also impossible to use if you're an expat, and you get locked out of every Government online system that requires strong identification.

I have colleagues who have replaced ctrl-f on a (long) document they already have open with prompting an LLM to find things for them.
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:40AM (#49464780)
This is incorrect. The physical card itself expires every 10 years, but your status as a permanent resident doesn't. That can only be revoked by a legal process.

Obviously if you do not renew the green card itself, you are going to face practical issues, because you have no easy way to prove your permanent resident status. So things like employment verification because of new employment and entering the country from abroad will become quite a bit more difficult.

Now that everyone knows this can and will happen, are any of the future incidents inadvertent?

What if the damage in future incidents is more than just "The LLM saw some stuff it shouldn't"?

Re:The End of an Era on Friday July 31, 2026 @03:21PM (#49127468)
Oh, yes, because one example makes this generally true.

I'm sorry, but I have about 1M counter examples.

The cap will be reached when LLMs run out of original material to train on and the large majority of their training material is AI generated content.

The average person, yes. A professional, competent writer, editor, journalist? Not even close (currently).
The Olympic Committee comes pretty close, maybe even ahead of FIFA.
In the UK diabetes patients get automatically invited to followup appointments by the GP and eye screening tests every <n> months, where n depends on the severity of your condition. Adjustments to medication will happen at those appointments.
You'll understand when/if your Plex media library grows so large that every rescan takes a week.
So...don't buy any Ford vehicles designed and/or manufactured in the last 8 months or so?
[email protected] works for me, most of the time. Some of the places that like to spam their users no matter what filter example.com out.

I was a big fan of your OpenPhoto / Trovebox solution back in the day.

It was ahead of its time. Glad you're still working in the photo sharing space!

If I read the whole thing correctly, people on the IRC channel didn't instruct the agent to set up the bloated AWS infrastructure, the agent did, and its operator clearly didn't review any of it.

That was the root cause for the costs, not actions by people on the IRC channel.

If it's a one off and needs no or minimal maintenance work afterwords, sure.

If it's intended to be actively maintained, then you probably should understand how things work, unless you want to wipe everything and start from scratch when the LLM creates such a mess that it can't be sorted out.

That answer will change very quickly, if someone marches to a Creative show room, sales event or CES and "patches" all of their devices.
For every Apple, there are 100 mom-and-pop companies who have nothing.

Even more so in the future when a software company can be launched by a farm of AI Agents with a founder at helm with no clue about computing or security.

What's debateable is how many of those companies actually need irontight security, because they are never realistically going to be targets of criminals and/or they have nothing valuable to steal/corrupt in the first place (other than the owner's pride).

I'm not seeing any of this, and I've have been using the same email address that forwards to gmail for decades at this point, and it's in every major email data breach.

I get, maybe, one actual spam email per year through gmail's spam filters.

I get more actual spam at my work email, which is not hosted by gmail, even though the email volume of emails sent from outside of my employer's network is orders of magnitude smaller than my personal email volume.
