Re:Has anyone built their own authentication system? on Friday July 19, 2024 @08:42PM (#41013014)
ok, i was trying to do this for production. I am switching over to firebase but it's not working well with my client-server-architecture

Has anyone built their own authentication system?

I'm building out a website (never did full stack before) and am implementing authentication. It's turning out to be more work than I expected. Is it unreasonable to implement auth yourself with JWTs? You also need to setup email sending for verification which takes more time.

Re:Is anyone interested in a better Hacker News? on Monday July 01, 2024 @10:59PM (#40853180)
I really like the quora interface. I think old quora used to have a good community like HN. So I'm designing the ui kind of like that

What do you mean? i'm using llms to debug code and stuff

Is anyone interested in a better Hacker News?

I really like the content on this forum but I find the features and UI lacking. I was going to make another website dedicated to tech news and discussion but with a better user exp. Would anyone be interested in trying the product when I finish it?

Yes. The more you close the gap, the less I will work.
Re:How did you prepare for FAANG interviews? on Tuesday March 29, 2022 @03:02PM (#30846926)
it's the best i got
Because a big part of the search engine algorithm is recommending things based on how long others spent time there, what other sites they clicked on, etc. There's obv way less data on that for internal search engines.

And everybody wears masks. Everybody wore masks even before the pandemic due to the pollution.
Re:PhD at UW Madison or Northeastern? on Monday March 14, 2022 @11:41PM (#30681437)
Computer Science is my plan. I don't know if I need to collaborate or not, but from what I know that's not too common. Location is obv a huge plus for me for NEU. However Wisconsin might be better reputation wise.
Whenever people ask "Should I do a bootcamp" it shows they either aren't serious about CS or don't have the willpower to crack into a new field.
Re:Ask HN: Are we seeing a start of the wider conflict? on Sunday March 13, 2022 @08:05PM (#30667075)
USA should mind its own business and stop wasting our tax money to bully countries in the middle east. Anyone that supports this crap should be the full bearer of costs.

PhD at UW Madison or Northeastern?

I'm going back to grad school because I am interested in research. I received admissions to both those places. Beyond the obvious "the adviser is the most important" which do you think would be a better school? How does NEUs reputation to UW Madison compare? I'm leaning towards NEU because of location.

A typical first job will need you to prove the axiom of choice and be able to build a quantum turing machine.

"just review some basic algorithms" lol.

Maybe mine crypto in the winter if there's some software compatible with it.
Re:Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown on Sunday March 13, 2022 @07:55PM (#30667015)
How you are able to have such cognitive dissonance in believing that China is an authoritarian government that locks down entire buildings because someone tested positive for a mutation of a cold virus but also not believe they have had few covid cases is beyond me.
Re:Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown on Sunday March 13, 2022 @07:54PM (#30667007)
Agreed. It's stupid. Feel bad for the people living their miserable lives there. First locked in school all day for 24/7 and now they're locked in because the government is scared
Re:Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown on Sunday March 13, 2022 @07:51PM (#30666994)
I don't believe any of that crap. Have you even read that comment about being locked in a building because someone tested positive?
Re:Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown on Sunday March 13, 2022 @07:50PM (#30666987)
That's complete bs lol. Please leave the commentating to people who actually know what's going on.
Re:Tell HN: China Is Entering Lockdown on Sunday March 13, 2022 @07:48PM (#30666981)
Such an awful idea. In order to save a few lives they're hurting everyone.
Re:Companies with No Work to Do? on Thursday March 10, 2022 @11:51PM (#30636345)
I'm talking about not caring if it's on the low end of standard industry pay, which would still be way more than min wage. If I didn't care at all, then there's literally no point in getting a job to do nothing because I wouldn't care about the money. 10$ an hour is not worth the inconvenience of being stuck somewhere and needing to do work once in a while
Re:Companies with No Work to Do? on Thursday March 10, 2022 @12:53PM (#30630016)
I thought of that too, but I don't think I'll be able to hide away and do my own work. Their pay is also too tiny to being worthwhile.
Re:Companies with No Work to Do? on Thursday March 10, 2022 @12:50PM (#30629979)
Your assumption is incorrect. I love to work. Just not corporate work.
