Re:How to Stop a Data Center in Your Backyard on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @08:43PM (#47871066)
If you had a data center in your backyard you'd change your mind on this one suuuuuper fast.

As someone who has always viewed the winds of web development trends with significant skepticism, this article is one of the best I've read at explaining why no, you don't need <x language/y architecture/z framework>. The technologies that powered the web ten years ago still work just fine. Even the ones that powered the web 20 years ago often still have their place. Keeping your stack boring is frequently the best decision for everyone, save for the career climber who wants to put the latest trends on their CV for the next job.
Au contraire, this is already something I spend too much time thinking about and would prefer to think about less.
I hate articles like these. We all know we're going to die and that life moves too fast. In a practical sense it adds absolutely nothing of any positive value to remind people of this fact. Nobody is going to change the way they live their lives because of an article like this, all it does is make the reader's day a little more depressing.

That's cool and all, but who is actually out here using a linux phone?

Can we finally stop calling it "drugs and alcohol" and just acknowledge that alcohol is a drug?

If you know where to look on the dark web, MXE can occasionally still be found. The fine folks over at Lizard Labs in NL have also developed DMXE, which is apparently qualitatively nearly identical, though I have yet to be able to acquire any in the US.
Re:Work/life balance should be difficult on Wednesday December 15, 2021 @01:41PM (#29569947)
This is a stupid take. Work life balance could be easy if we didn't live in a system that forced you to sell your life to wealthy sociopaths in exchange for the right to exist.
I consider myself a person of above-average intelligence, insight, and drive. But working in Silicon Valley, I find myself constantly surrounded by people who are complete outliers. People who I consider close friends who I think are absolutely smarter, more creative, more driven, more knowledgeable than me.

And you know what? You can choose to compare yourself to them (and find yourself lacking) or you can choose to use it as inspiration. Look to those people for the traits you want to find and nurture within yourself. Actively choose to include those people in your life and let yourself become better for having them around. It's never too late to change how you look at things, or to become something different than what you are right now.

Well apparently the people of El Salvador would beg to differ.
This guy read Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky
I think the competition is Eat Club, not any of those individual delivery services.
I very highly recommend reading up on Dr. John Lilly, easily one of the most interesting scientists during that era. Along with interspecies communication, he heavily researched psychedelic drug experiences and combining them with sensory deprivation tanks. He became heavily addicted to ketamine (reports say that he would come to work every day with a spray bottle full of ketamine, and noisily snort it throughout the day), and eventually became convinced of the existence of a cosmic organization called the Earth Coincidence Control Office (E.C.C.O.), which directed the actions of individuals on Earth. His story is also the inspiration for the video game Ecco the Dolphin.
This seems like a really big deal.

Even assuming they meet all their product goals, who is going to choose this over AWS?

I stopped reading when the author claimed that bitcoin not having "alternative uses, like gold" makes it less suitable as a currency
#2 is the worst solution if you care about principles over end user experience. Most organizations and corporations do not prioritize things that way.

From Wikipedia's page on Compact Disc Digital Audio:

Each audio sample is a signed 16-bit two's complement integer, with sample values ranging from −32768 to +32767. The source audio data is divided into frames, containing twelve samples each (six left and right samples, alternating), for a total of 192 bits (24 bytes) of audio data per frame.

I'm surprised they left out The Engineer Guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp33ZprO0Ck

Not very prolific, but interesting and in-depth explanations of all sorts of engineering topics - from the function of microwave ovens (that's the link up there ^ ) to what keeps nuclear weapons from proliferating.

What intangible traits do you look for in an engineering hire?

One of the other engineers on my team just messaged me:goldcountry, when you get a chance, could you spend a couple minutes thinking about what qualities you would look for in new engineers we'd want to bring to the team, especially the intangibles, like a sense of humor, or obsessed with code execution speed, etc.? If you could compile it into an email that would be perfect. I'm prepping for...
