News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I actually agree with you.

I thought my post would be downvoted anyway, so I didn't care about being a bit hyperbole.

I really didn't want such a huge discussion here, I'd rather have people talk about Vile Rat, the State Dept Rep who got killed for nothing. He deserves all the attention, not the quibbles of people disagreeing here.

What are you trying to say?

I use AMD on a desktop and a laptop and dual monitor works perfectly in Ubuntu 12.04 with both in various setups.

Re:Ubuntu announces 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) Beta 1 on Friday September 07, 2012 @02:18AM (#4487858)
Actually the move has and always had a 5 year time frame. We are well within it.

As a side note, I just yesterday tried out the Django 1.5 development trunk in a python3 virtualenv and it all worked. :)

Re:Ask HN: PHP or Ruby? on Thursday September 06, 2012 @07:16AM (#4483662)
Python. (YouTube, Reddit, ...)

Second choice Ruby without a second of doubt.

Re:YouTube Flags Democrats’ Convention Video on Copyright Grounds on Wednesday September 05, 2012 @11:00AM (#4479647)
These copyright blockage debacles are slowly turning from inconvenient to dangerous.

As a musician, content producer and programmer copyright just makes me sick.

Re:Aljazeera News website hacked on Tuesday September 04, 2012 @02:37PM (#4475866)
These are no "hackers" if they do this for a violent and evil dictator. They are the equivalent of the propaganda sheep in the third reich and nothing more. They are on the wrong side of history, that's clear, bargains in an evil, inhuman game.

Re:Linus Torvalds responds to what killed the Linux desktop on Tuesday September 04, 2012 @02:35AM (#4473424)
What? Unity is the first shell that actually properly supports multi-monitor setups. I use it with two monitors actually and it's been just amazing to work with.
Re:Linus Torvalds responds to what killed the Linux desktop on Monday September 03, 2012 @07:25PM (#4472260)
FUD, Unity is great and you know it. People bashing Unity have not really tried it yet.
Linux on the desktop isn't doomed at all. People saying the opposite are either naive or have interests to lie about it.

I am absolutely sure that Microsoft and Apple are fighting against desktop Linux any way they can as it takes away market share and any amount of market share is fought hard about these days.

In my opinion Apple and Microsoft favoured (paid off) bloggers/(ex-)developers, and opinion writers do their best to spread FUD and anti Linux propaganda all the time and everywhere. I think that a large part of the Ubuntu Unity FUD for example comes from there.

Look at any discussion remotely about Linux or Ubuntu and you will see random comments about how bad Unity is, even here in this thread. Even if the topic has nothing to do with Unity. It's not a coincidence.

I am a developer using Unity and find it the greatest thing that ever happened to Linux, and the non-developer people I support on their Ubuntu Unity machines just love it, they wouldn't want to change anything.

All I see is that the Linux desktop now is getting really competitive (yes I mean Ubuntu 12.04) and that's why we hear all this FUD now. With "competitive" I mean usability, security, ease of use and style. The market share is low, yes, but it's slowly growing and it will continue to do so.

The Linux desktop being dead is just a laughable idea when looking at the facts.

Re:12 (Really) Controversial Programming Opinions on Sunday September 02, 2012 @02:57AM (#4466428)
In my opinion not many Python programmers care for places like stackoverflow, as the language itself has excelent infrastructure to deal with problems and to get ones questions answered quickly without bothering other people. Maybe that's why the vote is so high there.

Everyone working with Python a little while won't even think about indentation anymore, it just comes natural. It's not a big deal.

Python is often made out in discussions like that to be for begginners only and only amateurs would use it because its slow, not concurrent etc... The truth though is that YouTube, Reddit, Dropbox, Spotify, Discuss, Google, Nasa and many other "real" professionals use Python in a big way.

I tend to ignore such trolls.

Well, we'll see if this is legal in Europe. Website cookies are regulated already here, I guess this sort of abuse will have to be stopped as well. Shame on Microsoft for another outrageous decision.
Re:Experimental Python 3 support in Django on Monday August 20, 2012 @05:27AM (#4406840)
Proper Unicode support for one.

Also, Python 3 is the new standard, by upgrading its code base to it, Django can stay relevant and up to date.

Libraries and frameworks that don't upgrade soon, will be replaced or just forgotten.

I use a chrome extension called disconnect, that blocks tracking from facebook, google, twitter, etc.

When I open hipset it looks like this: http://imgur.com/9hEX5

Nada, nothing.

When I allow facebook I can see the site.

This and the facebook only login, made me instantly close the site and forget it. Btw, I work two jobs: Programmer and musician. And that site was just disappointing on all fronts.

Re:Why isn’t Twitter charging for their API? on Friday August 17, 2012 @07:57PM (#4399520)
Nope, as a developer I can say that I wouldn't pay Twitter for access.

I probably also wouldn't take any paying jobs any more working with the free Twitter API as it stands now - too many restrictions.

Re:.at domains warning on Friday August 17, 2012 @07:33AM (#4395857)
That's wrong information:

On this page[1] nic.at states (under "Cancel a domain") that cancellations can be made by fax or letter.

Also on the "fax confirmation" PDF[2] it says in big letters: "Please send it by fax or scanned by e-mail to: ..."

Re:Megaupload case: New Zealand court wants FBI evidence on Thursday August 16, 2012 @12:21PM (#4392071)
I am surprised the NZ courts didn't have the evidence to begin with. How could they decide over the validity of the extradition request without it?
Re:Ecuador grants Julian Assange asylum on Thursday August 16, 2012 @09:15AM (#4391007)
And all just to keep a website on/off the internet.
Re:The first Django site to run on Python 3 on Wednesday August 15, 2012 @07:52AM (#4385477)
Well, the authors of frameworks and libraries still on Python 2 and without having concrete upgrade plans will have to either do something soon or others will take their space.

Python 3 is here, now.

Re:Which distros to start Linux with on Tuesday August 14, 2012 @06:12AM (#4380142)
Why editorialise the title? It's very misleading this way.
> worst outcome of one is the child gets lonely and scared for a small period of time

Actually the outcome could be the exact same thing in both cases.

This is a very interesting phenomenon.

1) A child approached by an adult man = everyone is alerted.

2) A helpless child that should be helped = nobody cares.

It seems that in case 1 it's more about getting the bad guy then to help the child. This is all sorts of crazy if there is any truth to it. I'd love to see a study on this.

Re:Codec Confusion in Python on Saturday August 11, 2012 @05:18AM (#4369790)
This just got much clearer in Python3, all string literals are now Unicode by default, making it much easier to code internationalized programs in Python.

There is an "Explicit Unicode Literal" (u"string"), to make it easier for library authors to run their libs in one codebase on Python 2 and Python 3. (In Python 3 "string" is the same as u"string")

Codecs are in their own modules, like for example base64, where they belong.

The confusions seems to be with Python 2, Python 3 has fixed it, so move on.

But you still can read the content right?
Yes that would be a valid reason to make that request, but the commenter above was misleading people that they had to login, which is wrong.
Re:Released footage of the police raid on the Kim Dotcom mansion on Wednesday August 08, 2012 @08:47AM (#4355215)
This is a disgrace for New Zealand and as a European this whole ordeal has warned me plenty to not do any business there ever.

The US who were obviously the ones in charge of NZ police and general "law" enforcement are another story. The world police has done their will again. Without thinking, without logic, without sense, but Hollywood money behind them.
