They're customer-obsessed the way Dracula is a neck enthusiast.
If conforming socially is a terminal value for you, then this is more of a feature than a bug.
So now it's a crime for me to share my "Evil Bilbo's face pasted on porn actors" memes? The west has fallen.

Because he's envious and feels inferior, and thinks he's sticking it to those meanies who made him feel that way.

> These are powerful building blocks, they're just not the be all end all. The building blocks up stack that use these as part of a broader architecture, that shape these and many other traditional techniques in software... this is where the real value will be unlocked.

I could not agree more. There is much value still to be gained from blockchain technology!

Damn you're right, we should give Larry Ellison the benefit of the doubt.
You are going to accept those overlords long before any of that is possible, and then it never will be.
No, it's the other way around. Humans will continue the trend of interacting with "the world" less and less, and thus become more like the LLMs themselves. They won't get smarter; we will get stupider and meet them in the middle. You can already see this happening.

It has the nice feature of marking whoever says it as a coward and a sheep.

The people in charge in the west are not going to let this happen. Look at Canada.

LLMs let the massively stupid and incompetent produce something that on the surface looks like a useful output. Most massively stupid incompetent people don't know they are that. You can work out the rest.
one thing we did on the C64 in this vein (I was a bad kid) was to send opcodes to the CPU on the 1541 floppy drive to send the head to a nonexistent track. This would sometimes jam the head and require physical repair of the drive.
Re:DOJ may want to break up Google on Tuesday August 13, 2024 @10:27PM (#41241988)
Google's monopoly position makes them invaluable to US intelligence and related psyops. They won't be broken up in any meaningful way. At most this is a threat to gain further control.
Re:Why do big digital projects in the public sector fail? on Friday August 09, 2024 @01:44PM (#41203893)
I never really understood this. I work for a small contracting shop, and we definitely give a shit, because our reputation is on the line. Without our excellent reputation we wouldn't keep getting work. How do the big contracting firms get away with it? It seems like everyone knows they're awful, except the people who give them billions of dollars.
Damn, the police should start using that app!
the wise man bowed his head solemnly and spoke: "there's actually zero difference between good & bad things. you imbecile. you fucking moron"
> Imagine not just reading a bed time story

Instead of trying to imagine that I'm just gonna have chatGPT tell me what it would be like.

Civ 4 was the last serious iteration, 5 and 6 are both ezmode simplified browser games at their core.
Re:An intergenerational crime against humanity on Wednesday June 05, 2024 @02:30PM (#40588561)
> What's even the point?

The point is to prime everyone to be OK with the neglect and elimination of old people in the near future, to help alleviate the demographic collapse.

> Japan was already done fighting at that point

Damn, they really should have told someone.

Re:Physicists now question the fate of the Universe on Wednesday May 22, 2024 @12:39PM (#40442998)
"What’s reality? I don’t know. When my bird was looking at my computer monitor I thought, ‘That bird has no idea what he’s looking at.’ And yet what does the bird do? Does he panic? No, he can’t really panic, he just does the best he can. Is he able to live in a world where he’s so ignorant? Well, he doesn’t really have a choice. The bird is okay even though he doesn’t understand the world. You’re that bird looking at the monitor, and you’re thinking to yourself, ‘I can figure this out.’ Maybe you have some bird ideas. Maybe that’s the best you can do."

-- Terry Davis

Doing this in a trainer helicopter without doors was the most terrifying experience of my life. You don't want to do this if you don't have to.
People go past that idea by noticing that it happened on Earth almost as soon as it possibly could have happened. If we just got incredibly lucky, you'd think the planet would have sat around a while before the big stroke of luck, but it didn't. This is fairly suggestive that abiogenesis is not that unlikely.

What, why not? It couldn't be that hard to trick them.

> I think when we start using it as a temporary measure it will become very clear what the downsides are

It seems more likely we won't know the downsides until the damage is done, which is what happened with using fossil fuels in the first place.

minsky, 'society of mind', everything old is new again
> You are equating the output of the model with the views of its creators.

The existence of the guardrails and the stated reasons for their existence suggest that this is exactly what its creators expect me to do. If nobody thought that was reasonable, the guardrails wouldn't need to exist in the first place.

Re:The 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers on Friday December 01, 2023 @10:05PM (#38495499)
But what you said was that without Youtube you'd be at a disadvantage in "academic topics". That seems ridiculous on its face, unless you are somehow unable to read. My point is that I am in no way at such a disadvantage, nor would you be.

You keep implying all over this thread that ad-free access to funny Youtube videos is something like a human right. This is absurd. Your logic would result in my tax dollars paying for your funny Youtube videos. I don't want that.

Re:The 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers on Friday December 01, 2023 @09:59PM (#38495472)
Damn, I've never watched a video to learn academic topics in my entire life, I must have actual brain damage. I just read books like some moron.
