From the synopsis page, it almost sounds like the River Tethys in the Hyperion Cantos: farcaster portals that join segments in disparate worlds into a single, unbroken, flowing river.
I'd love to hear your explanation. I've tried my hand at explaining it to others in various contexts, but I usually lose my audience pretty quickly.
Yep, it's good. It starts off with a really cool description of the process by which a synthetic mind is created from scratch and thrown into a community of other minds (both synthetic and post-human uploaded consciousnesses). The rest of it was good too, but that was a memorable moment for me.
Looks great, and as the other commenter mentioned, solves a problem I've had on previous teams. I actually like the layout and the graphics on your landing page. If you're comfortable sharing, I would be interested to know how you procured or produced the art.

I'm building a video game (2d/mobile) and am finding out how labor-intensive art asset creation can be. I know I'm not efficient yet and am making rookie mistakes, but even so, I'm looking for alternatives. Does anyone have recommendations for companies, studios or individuals that will make game art on a contract or per-sprite basis? Also, I'm using a mixture of Adobe Flash and Photoshop to...

I'm looking for a challenge with a smaller, faster, leaner company. I currently work for a large Fortune 500 and would like a change of pace. GIS, Education, ISP (Internet Service Provider) tech are all comfortable areas of interest for me, but I am definitely open to trying out other industries/verticals.
Currently reside in Madison, WI but may move if it doesn't warm up soon.

I'm pulling together a fairly large dataset that I am using for some side projects and I believe it could be valuable to other businesses. Any advice out there on the following?1. best way to test whether a market for the data exists,2. best way to sell the data to customers (are there good, established marketplaces for datasets?)3. tips or lessons learned on designing APIs and running a...
I plan to, if there is interest. It's easy in that the solution is straightforward and there are few difficult technical problems to solve. It will, however, require a substantial time commitment to build, which is why I'd like to gauge the market first.

I have an idea for a site that I suspect would be useful to members of a niche online community. I would like to float my idea around to gauge interest. The problem is that the idea is somewhat easy to implement and the community is made up of technically-skilled people with free time. Is it a good idea to announce the idea and create a sign-up site to collect emails and/or opinions? Does...
I asked a similar question a few months ago and got mostly the same answers as you. Most people here seem content dealing with the lack of cool Gmail interface stuff and opt to host their own. Someone needs to build a slick gmaily interface that can be plopped on a web server to use your self-hosted email. Bonus points for adding an XMPP chat client so you can use GTalk and see when your contacts are online. If nothing else, web hosting providers would buy this from you to offer their customers.
This looks pretty interesting. Thanks for the tip!

What software do you use to monitor your servers and the services running on them? I'm looking for Nagios competitors that are better and easier to set up. Right now, I've got a few Perl scripts that send emails if the disk gets full or if my site isn't returning the expected content, but it's not ideal.
I guess I'm a little confused on the legal requirements surrounding sales tax for online vendors. If brick and mortar shops are required to, why aren't shops online required to? I understand that technically it's the shopper who owes the tax, but though businesses were required to collect it on their behalf.

I was pondering over the Amazon/California Sales Tax story and wondered why more eCommerce sites don't collect sales tax. If you don't collect sales tax from your customers, why not?
In my mind, replication has historically been a pretty big deciding factor in favor of MySQL. PostgreSQL didn't support it natively until version 9.0 (which still isn't part of most Linux distro repositories). You'd have to install Slony or something similar. MySQL made master/slave or master/master replication simple to configure and a breeze to maintain.
Awesome, thanks for the great response! Do you happen to know what model your buddy's laptop is?

I'm looking for something to do illustration and animation on for web design, 2d games, etc. I want to draw on the screen, but it can't be tied to another computer, so the Wacom Cintiq is out. I've heard of people using their iPad for illustration, but I am unsure of how well it works with a stylus and how smooth/responsive the drawing experience would be. Can anyone give me a recommendation?
Sorry, what does "repro'd" mean?
Thank you for the concrete suggestion! From the screenshots, Roundcube looks like a very good webmail client. It looks like they're going after Outlook though with their feature set and layout.
[Edit] But this is exactly what I'm looking for in terms of being an installable package that can be thrown on a web server and hooked up to an in-house or third party email infrastructure.
Ok, let's change the context then. What if I run a web hosting company and want to offer an installable package that includes an MTA, MDA and a front end for viewing/sending mail? (I don't run a web hosting company, so I'm sure there are other things that need to go into that mix.) The customer would click a button and we would configure everything on their VPS or whatever. If that's not plausible enough, maybe I'm a web hosting company that just offers to host your email and now I've got enough scale to make it worth investing resources to ensure deliverability and spam filtering. At some point it's got to be worth running your own email infrastructure and for those scenarios, is there an installable front end that has the Gmail special sauce?

I'm a long-time Gmail user and love the slick web interface. I love the searchability, threading of emails, intuitive reply mechanism, built-in chat, etc. However, I don't have full control over it. I would like to run my own mail server, with my own domain, and host a comparable web interface to it for my own purposes. Built-in chat would be great (maybe compatible with XMPP so I could...
i would like to know how you searched for and chose the property. did you spend a lot of time searching for the right neighborhood? was the property in the city where you lived, or did you seek out a city with the economic circumstances to make your investment work? is this something that you will be able to replicate over and over again or was it a sweetheart, once-in-a-lifetime deal?
Does the MVP model work for games in general? It seems if you're submitting to Steam, the App Store, Android Market, etc. you'll either end up denied entry or get buried by the games with a certain level of polish.
Maybe VZW is split testing the rollout with different bundles and settings. My wife has had the same issues as me with her Incredible after the update. Maybe our charger is hosed and we only noticed a difference when looking for changes between versions.
Like you, I was eagerly anticipating the Froyo upgrade for my Incredible. However, after receiving the update, I am actually looking for ways to go back to 2.1. I haven't noticed any visual improvements, in fact the Sense UI seems more sluggish. Also, HTC and Verizon jammed in a ton of uninstallable software with Froyo. I now have Skype Mobile, Amazon MP3, My Verizon Mobile, some "Stocks" app, City ID (which continues from 2.1) and a bunch more that you can't remove and it all randomly starts running when I'm not looking. The battery life (which used to be great, much better than a buddy's Evo) is terrible as a result. Google really needs to reign it in.
Maybe instead of making the whole idea area draggable, make just the idea's titlebar draggable so we could gain the ability to select and copy text.
My coworker gave me admin access to his ideas list, and I promptly deleted one of his ideas, just to see if I could. I was surprised that it just "went away", but I'm glad notification of the event (along with the idea itself) was emailed off to him. It would be nice if my ideas, that get junked by someone else, (or all junked ideas) went into some sort of trash bin associated with the list (and maybe only the person who creates the idea gets to purge it forever).
Edit: excellent work overall!
