I think the opposite is true and people will have the opportunity to be more social than before. Majority of people, including those intellectually inclined, bond not over efficiency but … human things. We do things together not out efficiency. Think about house cats that play together, what drive them to play with each other if they need not to make an effort, they live in post scarcity world of no work.

I fixed many bugs over the last years with help of claude code in an unfamiliar codebase. it is never just Claude alone so we don’t rely on AI understanding 100%. It is whatever AI can understand plus what I do. If you use AI right your understanding will also grow over time.

Re:Do Frameworks Matter Anymore?

It would be great of AI could surface some learnings/pain points from its daily work in a centralised fashion, just like humans sometimes do. This leads to development of good libraries and frameworks. Right now AI just leads to many siloed sessions that keep solving and resolving same problems in isolation.

Professional software engineering is not an art. It is a commercial and engineering endeavour. Attitude of treating it as art has always been present and created tension between people wanting to go for originality, purity and those who wanted first of all have business impact or engineering quality. At work: dev work should not be art and not aspire to it, AI does great at work because of it. As a hobby it can be whatever you need it to be, but don’t try to convince me I can’t enjoy my hobby of building useful things with AI, you do you.

in my municipality reporting is anonymous, so a tourist could report it. They have to know where first which takes a bit of search.

it has gotten worse over the years in the Netherlands sadly. My municipality does clean up, but the supply of litter seems to be relentless.

I did a lot of SQL optimisation with claude code over the last year, what made it work for me was making sure I verify everything with explain analyze. The whole loop was not fully “agentic” because of this but it was still faster and better than when done entirely manually. Claude also suggested plenty of small optimisations I would otherwise not do.

Common remark about game making (also here) is that “there are already a lot of games, building them is not the limiting factor“, and yet I find myself without anything to play despite these 70k games on steam. I like playing city building games, all the good ones I already beat and there is nothing new that seems any good!

Negative sentiment is more general than toxicity in my understanding - but it does include it. The fact that the study found HN consistently negative does not surprise me, one of the ways HN is negative (the most disruptive and which makes me post here less often) is indeed toxic comments. But I am still here (in the comments no less) so the benefit still outweighs the pain.

I was genuinely curious to learn what are the arguments to keep cash around (I myself am pretty happy with digital payments). This article was such as tedious read and in the end I am still not well educated on the arguments. mostly that there is a narrative against cash, that it is demonized and that somehow digital money is like casino chips? As far as I know banks and their apps do function based on gov regulations so it is pretty far from chips or uber points.
