Re:The SEC Should Block Anthropic's IPO to Protect the Public on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:49AM (#50352696)
Investing on IPOs is almost always a bad idea. They are timed for the most expensive moment, and when earnings appear highest.
You don't need to learn anything - you can create your own shortcuts. The thing I like about vi vs emacs is the separation between normal/insert/command modes.
Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @09:03AM (#50352113)
It's also written in a game-like way - the world has a set of simple and understandable rules and the main character completes a series of challenges to progress forward. It reminds me of a lot of military fiction like Bernard Cornwell and WEB Griffith where in each book the main character gets a new promotion. It's sort of a childish view of life, like getting merit badges or something.
Re:Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:22PM (#50342182)
I listened to the first audio book. It consists entirely of descriptions of the main character making coffee and hawking belt buckles. It is pretty tedious, maybe a more optimistic version of something like the game cart life

Some states have really nice rest stops along the freeway. I think it's variable

They also had guidance of negative cash flow for 2027. This is not what people like to hear. This is the same as Gelsinger betting the farm on 18a/foundry/etc. I think it's the right decision for the business but the numbers were never going to look good.
It's worth remembering that 5 years ago Intel was making close to 100b revenue at over 20% net margin. Whether they can again achieve this (or better) is the question, and depends on how much the total capex costs, how fast they can ramp up production, how long the data center capex spending lasts etc. It's possible their margins will never be that high again if they were the result of irresponsibly milking the business and not reinvesting. Tsmc has much better margins, though that may also not last if it's a result of lack of competition.
Re:'Forced out': HOA fees to rise to $2,500 a month on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:47AM (#50272723)
I love it when the listing says "includes covenants to protect your investment". Hahaha not a chance
Re:Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash on Thursday October 22, 2026 @09:16AM (#50194900)
Reminds me of megabus, a discount greyhound type bus. The last time I used it it didn't show up, with no refund, and an obnoxious runaround on the phone. I was amazed anyone would run a business like that; not surprised to see they went bankrupt in 2024. I've since given up on buses entirely. Greyhound shows up on schedule but is still a thoroughly unpleasant experience
No kidding. Having a separate app store is the default for pc gaming.
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:55AM (#50104605)
It certainly goes back further than that. The protagonist in the silent movie Greed was a "dentist" working without a license.
I saw Mad God not too long ago. I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped, but I did enjoy some of the animation.
Re:Friendship ended with Deno, now Node is my best friend on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:23AM (#49978072)
If I remember correctly, using nvm on Debian to install the newest version of node silently appended lines to my bashrc. Friends don't silently append lines to my bashrc.
Re:In Ukraine, distributed renewables foil Russia's assaults on Sunday October 04, 2026 @10:00AM (#49954007)
No one will attack North Korea because they are backed by China. I'm not sure how nuclear weapons helps them unless they split from China. Maybe they make money selling the tech to others.
That was 8 years ago, and the result of altria massively overpaying to acquire juul, a deal which went spectacularly bad.
I'd be surprised if any one selling tobacco products were swimming in cash. Single use vapes are expensive compared to cost but there are tons of sellers. If you buy vape juice you can get something like the equivalent of 100 packs of cigarettes for $15. Vape shops jack up all the prices but there are 5 shops on every street and they always seem empty and I'm convinced they are mostly just laundering money.
I recently ordered something on eBay, which when looking up tracking on usps said that it used counterfeit postage. The seller didn't want to give my money back right away, saying it happens all the time and they think it actually was still going to arrive. Then they gave my money back. eBay is full of scammy sellers and seems not to care

Neovim is advertised as being a plug in replacement for vim, which is 100% not true. Many things are different, including undo files and :!. I can't remember the feature that made me give up, but at some point the switch became more work than it was worth, considering my vim setup already works. I'm not sure what I would do if I were starting out today.
If so they're going to be massively tariffed in the US. Chips are a national security sector.
Re:My agent.md to improve LLM-assisted code quality on Monday August 24, 2026 @08:20AM (#49418686)
One thing I've figured out of that qwen3.6 35b refuses to use 2 space indentation for python code, although it claims to be doing it. I know for a fact it is an easy thing to do.
Re:Show HN: Huzzah – a novel approach to coding with AI on Friday August 21, 2026 @08:36AM (#49387178)
I agree with you but for a different reason. When the ai generates exactly what I asked it to but it isn't working, I need to think and figure out what I really want rather than what I previously thought I wanted.
Re:What will TV look like in three years? on Monday August 17, 2026 @08:22AM (#49329719)
Here's a fun quote:

> Anjali Sud, Tubi CEO: I think you’ll see ads get way more useful and relevant the same way they have on social media. If you think about the experience today on television, it still largely feels like the ads are not personalized, and you can imagine a world where you can see such hyper-personalization that really — it gets to a place where what you see as an ad doesn’t even feel interruptive or like friction. It actually just feels like, wow, that was really helpful and useful, because you know me so well.

Re:Nvidia is pulling Wall Street into the AI buildout on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @07:37AM (#49256607)
It's really not clear to me from the announcement what exactly this is. The PR about treating GPUs as an "investable asset" makes my skin crawl, and the participation of 5 giant banks really doesn't help.
Re:Taste Is All That's Left on Friday August 07, 2026 @10:42AM (#49211231)
It looks like it's only 15 pages and I do like camp, so I think I may have a go at it
Re:Taste Is All That's Left on Friday August 07, 2026 @08:13AM (#49209214)
I'm a little confused. She follows describing people with good/bad taste immediately with the statement that there is no system for taste. If it is all relative, then how is she determining that someone has good or bad taste? Is there anything between moral relativism and mathematical proof? Just your own ineffable belief that you are right?
Does it do it efficiently though?
