Ask HN: Engineering Managers how do you keep track of your direct reports?

As a newer manager, I’m trying to see if there are any tools/best practices for managers to help their reports in career development.I currently use a spreadsheet to track against their career ladder/goals and another doc to keep track of notable pull request, feedback, and documents. Any other tips or best practices?

Ask HN: How to Start Contributing to Open Source?

I have been a serious follower and user of a couple open source projects but have been extremely overwhelmed by the idea of contributing to the project. How do I start? How did you start? What should I follow to get more information about open source communities?

I know this won't help in the short term but I would highly encourage you to participate in hackathons or work on side projects and list those on your resume along with what you learned. It gives you character and makes yourself memorable to the reader.

0% It would kill any chance of adoption in favor of parse or firebase.

Re:Socket.IO C++ on Monday April 13, 2015 @12:28PM (#9368567)
Ah, that makes sense. And I think I might have found an answer to my own question:

"By virtue of being written in C++, this client works in several different platforms. The examples folder contains an iPhone, QT and Console example chat client!" - From the github repo

Out of curiosity, what's the reasoning behind going with C++? Just for fun or is there some advantage to C++ over other languages for sockets?
It would be super easy to convert this to html if you wanted to because the format is so similar. But also, at this point, wouldn't it just be easier to just write it in HTML and make the actual product or use a framework like bootstrap? Im just struggling to see the value add. Maybe there is something I am missing. Would love to hear your reasoning and what led you to create this.

After doing that enough times, won't it basically look like a smaller version of inline css?

Maybe the author meant that there is a lean towards gulp over grunt? Not sure. but my company still uses grunt in production

Also, lets not forget React Native. NO other framework can prove that compatibility with mobile. A React programmer can now cover both web and mobile development with relative ease. I'm not saying that React Native or React is perfect, but I would argue it is the best option for any company with limited developer resources.

Re:Ask HN: How do you stay motivated to work on side projects? on Friday December 26, 2014 @06:29PM (#8800936)
Talk to people about it. Get continuous feedback. I find that by discussing it with friends or family I get re-energized

Ask HN: How can I find hackathons post-college?

Hey HN,Throughout college I participated in many hackathons throughout the college circuit (HackNY and other HackerLeague events). But now that I have graduated, I want to continue to participate in them. I have done extensive google searches to find aggregated lists and have found some listings but not too many. Anyone have any tips, lists, or sites that they check? Also, I'm in NYC.Thanks!
