Re:Nextcloud: Open-Source Cloud Apps on Sunday September 22, 2024 @06:41AM (#41616131)
The idea of using a private cloud sounded wonderful, ran an instance of Next Cloud using encrypted storage, it didn't take long when my files disappeared due to a bug on the encryption and los my files for ever. Never went back to it

I think the goal of this is that you can prove, so that your counter party does not need to rely on trust

Not sure how this will solve edge cases problems described at the beginning of the article

I had a similar goimport issue importing the wrong pkg. I've added a forbidigo linter rule to fail when certain packages were imported.

It seems that perfection is attained, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away.

Re:Ask HN: Why do open source projects use discord? on Tuesday September 05, 2023 @04:10PM (#37397073)
This is really cool
Re:Learn COBOL in 1 Day on Tuesday September 05, 2023 @04:08PM (#37397055)
I'm a native spanish speaker. When I hear Italian or Portuguese I can understand most of it, butnI wouldn't be able to formulate a proper sentence. The same happens with programming language, you can get the semantic without knowing the syntax just because you know how to program, and of course, you can read specific syntax documentation (the dictionary) when something is not clear.
Re:Ask HN: Why do open source projects use discord? on Tuesday September 05, 2023 @06:10AM (#37389872)
I didn't know matrix had that many users! Despite of that, I still believe that the ethos is important, I tend to think that people choose the open source model for a variety of reasons, including principles.

Ask HN: Why do open source projects use discord?

I personally find discord bloated, slow and hard to use. But besides my personal impressions, I am genuinely intrigued by the fact that, having platforms like matrix, which very well aligns with the open source ethos, many people rely upon closed source services like discord to provide support and build communities for their projects. What are the features the it offers?

I see a big potential for unbanked people wanting to make a simple website to perhaps sell their products

yes, rewrite them on a modern language!

Re:Show HN: Mu – A Micro App Platform on Tuesday August 29, 2023 @08:25PM (#37316040)
Definitively a deal breaker considering that there are no way to test the site. A test/sandbox environment could be a good first step

Bitcoin payments can be non trivial if done via Lightning network (liquidity management is not easy). I can imagine mu.app being a LN payment processor.

Re:Do, or do not. There is no try on Saturday June 24, 2023 @02:39PM (#36461481)
This is awesome! I wonder if using the same techinque you could even even create a pseudo package manager. Once a pkg is installed via 'try', it keeps track of its filea ans remove or update such a pkg.

Re:Ask HN: What's your proudest hack? on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @02:57AM (#33966019)
This is awesome, i had to do the same, ended up writing a .h file that redefined malloc/free with macros, and then reported the missing and double frees.

I wonder if that production cost covers the initial R&D costs
some of them are, this is why there's a censorship threshold ( > 51%). Meaning that mixed transactions will take longer to make it to the chain
