Re:Prolog Formulation of the Constitution of Japan on Thursday July 18, 2024 @09:24PM (#41001333)
Err... The Japanese constitution is by definition unreadable if you can't read Japanese.

If you can read Japanese though, this is incredibly elegant!

But dolphins aren't in the same class as fish?!

Oh thank you for pointing this out!! I loved watching the ads and reading _ache_'s commentary. Wonderful work.

https://ache.one/articles/rail-and-advertising for the interested.

It was not a 747. Worse! It was a 747 Dreamlifter.

What do you use to do your taxes then?

Not sure if /s, but I recently read about emoji history. It apparently originated from pagers and then "graduated" to phones.

https://one-from-nippon.ghost.io/story-of-the-emoji/

Doesn't talk about kaomoji though which I think are supercool. Like this table flip: ( ╯ ° □ ° ) ╯ ︵ ┻ ━ ┻

This was a fascinating read. Do the benshis change the story? Or interpret it differently than intended? It sounds so foreign to me that I'd love to experience it.
"Men in Japan do fewer hours of housework and child care than in any of the world’s richest nations. That keeps women from getting better jobs and holds back the economy."

Slightly old but relevant piece from the NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/02/world/asia/japan-working-...

The camera is only 720p. There are probably a couple more iterations before this becomes good enough to not pull your phone out.

Calculating story points based on the size of the t-shirt you're wearing that day might actually yield more realistic results. In my case every story would become an XL! :)

Surely if you have story pointed and T-shirt sized your epics correctly that shouldn't be difficult? /s
What?!? You're telling me the weekly full disk virus scan that ruins 3 hours of work, the fortnightly security announcements from the poor schmuck chosen to be the security representative, and sending the password for a file in a separate email than the file.. all these don't really do much? the horror
It often feels like product ratings. Only the people who didn't like it bother to write a review.

The silent majority that's there for the subconsciously gets affected by the toxicity though.

By the time you're done paying for insurance, the nickel and diming on the rental, the tolls, and the physical toll of driving long stretches in a country you are not familiar with, it starts to sound like a better option to take a stress-free train ride and then a Lyft to your destination.
Agreed that the original comment did not add to the discourse but this response does come across as a bit harsh.

Is elpais like a national major? Is it similar to seeing an article from lemonde on HN?

I realize I played this card first, but maybe, just maybe, railways should not be for-profit infrastructure to begin with.

Japan, for example, has a similar problem with the bullet train. There are plenty of sleepy towns that would make little sense to stop at between Tokyo and Osaka.

They still have about 15 stops on that line anyway, and you have to take the slowest bullet trains to get there. But the stops have totally changed life in these cities.

Perhaps there's a similar case to be made for Northern Nevada?

Yes. Like the Amtrak in the North East Corridor. Where Amtrak actually has none of the limitations imposed by the freight carriers, and actually runs in the interest of the public good.

Guess what? It's also the only part of Amtrak that's ever made a profit.

> Yes, Japan had mobile phones on which you could browse the internet, all the way back in 1997. Hell, by 2003 you could watch live TV on your phone.

Wonder where all that technological superiority went..

Couldn't get to the bottom of it but seems like a really well-researched article. I would love to one day visit a Japanese hot spring but the nakedness factor is a bit off-putting.
