I like the idea of this, but just know that teaching first year university courses is nothing like giving a quality high school education. As someone who has done both, I think that it's near impossible for someone on the outside to appreciate the difficulty of the latter. You will be sadly mistaken if you believe that you can get away with giving a university type education to a high school student. This seems to be a big point that most education startups miss. That said, I look forward to seeing the results! Good luck!

Ask HN: How many of you patent your ideas?

Just out of curiosity, how important is it for someone with an idea for an online business to patent that idea? If you neglect to patent and the business gains some traction, how quickly are other companies to copy it? I've been wondering this for a while since someone without a lot of money probably wouldn't be able to afford the fees.

Re:Ask HN - Do you use hunger for productivity? (Life Hacking) on Tuesday September 25, 2012 @04:49PM (#4572586)
I definitely find that my focus is greater prior to eating. In fact, on days when I'm coding, I usually end up skipping lunch because, though I'm hungry, my brain is much more engaged in the process at hand.

Here's an idea: write a simple script to record key strokes during the time that you're coding; monitor your calorie intake; graph that shit. Science!

Ask HN: Cheap laptop for Rails web development?

Recently I've found that working on projects from home on my desktop is just killing my productivity.I'm looking for a laptop competent enough to do Rails, but not much past that - I don't need to be able to watch HD video or anything. Something that will be compatible with Ubuntu.I've read that you can request a refund from Microsoft if you buy a laptop with Windows 7 and decide not to use it....
