Yelp's ratings, reviews, recommendations, and tips aren't very good for food, bars, and things to do. I've always found Foursquare's to be much higher quality.

The Xbox 360 was also the first game console to have a Netflix app. I think MS has released stats stating that over half the time spent on the 360 is streaming video, which is most likely Netflix usage.

I hear sentiments like this a lot, but I don't agree. Many companies have training on how to use Google Calendar/Drive properly. That doesn't mean these products are too complicated.

Seems like a step back from the old design? Not a great browsing experience and for company pages, there is not very much information above the fold anymore.

What would happen if we valued forums the way we value tech sites? What would SomethingAwful's valuation be in today's tech world when it had the engagement and content creation power it held in the early 2000s ?
To me, Quora is really nothing more than a glorified forum.

Yeah, those people in the 50s who fought against desegregation just had a different personal opinion on what was okay. Nothing wrong with that!

Re:Microsoft introduces Universal Windows apps

From my understanding and use of XAML and HTML/JS, the UI performance you get on XAML apps is still better than whats achievable on HTML/JS apps.
Re:Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1

The users can dictate the ordering of apps and folders on the Metro Start Screen. Not only that, users can incorporate spatial organization to make apps even easier to scan and find quickly. You could argue that this is a better design. However, all designs have pros and cons and are not necessarily best for all use cases.
As to your second point, I think the question is how do you improve your UI without breaking previous mental models/behavior?
Re:Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @04:21PM (#7518693)
Tiles can be resized to be small, medium, large, and x-large sizes.
Re:Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @04:20PM (#7518678)
It's a good question because there are a handful of variables at play. Size of the window, density of objects, the layout of objects, the ordering of objects, etc.
Re:Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @03:30PM (#7518312)
So your problem isn't with the small-start screen vs big screen, but with the density of information? With the Metro Start Screen you can customize apps, folders, and their sizes to your liking, or just type what application you want and hit enter to launch it.
