there's a very good chance there's no human involvement at all in this

Re:My Favourite Laptop on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:10PM (#50340990)
The trackpoint of old is my favorite input method for laptops. But the trackpoint of new is not like the trackpoint of old. I still prefer it to the trackpad personally, just because it's so ingrained in me, but I no longer try to convince friends and family. It's on its way out, culturally, because of said enshittification.

That's just the thing; these devices aren't meant to be -good-, they're meant to check boxes.

The mechanical drive has probably failed. If you put the iPod in a freezer bag and get it very cold, it may spin up long enough for you to make a backup. But make sure it is in a freezer bag or something otherwise airtight or the condensation will brick it worse. The cold shrinks the metal enough to mitigate the initial friction of the drive spinning up.

From there, you can mod it to work from a micro SD card.

So this will end tech support scams, then?

Also. I regularly remove malware from people's android phones pro bono in and around my community. It all comes from the play store.

every new technology thing just looks like poorly disguised weapons now

Re:Using Claude to reduce the attack surface of code on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @09:25AM (#50180559)
No, it means some billionaires catch strays and have to sell one of their yachts out of their fleet, or cut dividends. The collapse of the current Google/Microsoft security and management duopoly would be less impactful on the average computer user than the death of flash player.

None of this is for you; it's for money. It's someone else's empire. Cybersecurity is a farce, and western culture would quickly recover from a complete collapse, and be better off for it.

Yesterday, I received a lifetime ban from r/MiSTerFPGA for simply replying to a post showcasing an AI-generated core with the text "ai poison"

Two words, no warning - Lifetime ban

Regardless as to whichever side of the camp you're on on this issue, the hysteria is clear. Everyone's so edgy and reactionary. You could probably say the same about my comment.

wasn't LLaMa only open source because it had already leaked anyways? And they wanted to spin it in a positive light for their stakeholders.
Absolutely. Pickles taste kiki. Pumpkin pie tastes bouba. All sensory inputs can be mapped as waveform.

Re:CPI-U rises 7.2% annualized in September (3.7% YoY) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:22AM (#50089036)
they call it "market basket" inflation. If eggs go up 20% and steak goes up 3%, inflation is recorded as 3% because obviously people will choose steak over eggs this year. Then next year, if steak goes up by 20% and eggs go up by 3%, inflation is recorded as 3% because obviously people will choose eggs over steak this year. This way, inflation is recorded as 6% even though everything costs 25% more; the governace gets to pat themselves on the back in the Bahamas with their piles of cash while the proles are left dumbfounded and starving.

I don't think image containers supporting both lossless and lossy is good

In all discussion of the modern image formats JXL and WebP, it has been mentioned that the formats support both lossless and lossy encoding, as if this is some sort of breakthrough feature. I think, at the very least, lossless and lossy image formats ought to use a different container, or file extension, so that -I- can differentiate them. As long as there is this sort of ambiguity, and unless...
