What are those consequences?
> And then came the greedy grifters. They invested money not just to get returns (they could've gotten returns on any other established field of business), but to gamble for a chance of crazy high returns. They thought software has near-zero marginal cost. They started building walled gardens, to extract rent from users. Build insane profits on that near-zero initial cost.
It looks like you are talking about enshittification: https://pluralistic.net/2024/08/17/hack-the-planet/. There are strong NGOs fighting for the user rights like https://eff.org and https://edri.org.
Why is this downvoted? OP is simply suggesting to give up, ignoring many intermediate victories in the war for privacy. Consider supporting
https://www.eff.org/issues/privacy instead.
What do you mean? These are desktop operating systems for end users.
> there is plenty of financial interest as well to keep it healthy
The financial interest that is based on advertisements?
> from "Android isn't Linux" to "Android uses Linux but it has no consequences for users or developers."
What does "Android is Linux" mean to you? It uses Linux? Why does it matter?
I don't see how any of these items prove your point.
> Cars being the most obvious on the list of downsides. The massive environmental cost
Newer cars require far less resources for construction and operation.
> the fact that 2% of the land area of the US is paved so that cars could work
Harmful governmental policies forcing people to use cars everywhere have nothing to do with the fact that progress makes cars more efficient.
The .odt standard is implemented in code. Now governments should force Microsoft to fully support it.
Are you saying that people working for free on their hobbies are stupid/lazy, because they don't have enough resources to fight trillionaire megacorps, which push proprietary formats instead of internationally recognized free standards? AI can help, but what we really need is government funding.
Are there known cases of people killed or attacked for their support of digital freedoms? I don't mean becoming famous for political actions or organizing large events. I mean buying non-mainstream devices or sending a few dollars to EFF.

Yes. Hence the privileged should fight for privacy and security on behalf of everybody and not spread the nihilsm. For example, by supporting user-respecting companies or NGOs fighting for user rights.
I don't understand, what the browser has to do with this. It can work without Google Play.
If you have Google Play in the same sandbox as your banking app, why can't Google access everything there? Or are they in different sandboxes?
Except much less data is leaked and sold, because not everyone uses gmail or sms.
> GrapheneOS has heavily pushed back against apps using remote attestation to restrict which operating systems and hardware can be used.
This sounds great. Could you give some examples of this pushing back?
Can Google have access to the banking information with such setup?
No, I can't. What's the problem?
