Ask HN: What things to buy from Amazon with free $150 gift?
This might be irrelevant to HN, but...I recently got a gift code worth $150 on Amazon.com.Are there anything that's absolutely necessary to spend this on Amazon? (Books, tech-related stuff)
Using multiple monitors come as a merit when someone needs to have multiple windows displayed at all times.
I think one way you can make this by using a single screen is to use a tiling windows manager.

It allows you to flash firmware with your own keymaps to your hhkb.
It's a great buy if you already have an hhkb.
From hardware aspect (although it was never asked), I use a hhkb type-s with the hasu controller. You may think it's a small change, but the fact that you can remap the arrow keys to {h,j,k,l} also helps because you no longer need to stretch your arm to your arrow keys. It did cost a bit of money, but I'm happy that I have it. And aside from the arrow key remap, I also remapped other keys to help with basic functionalities.
And also the centralized mobile payment system makes Chinese government to track every purchases that are made in the country.
I'm learning some newer languages like Rust and Go.In order to practice using it, I'm thinking about going with building API wrappers around those languages. Are there any APIs that people use and need wrappers for Rust and Go?
You could opt to get the IPS 1440P panel instead of the stock 1080P TN Panel (I'm not 100% positive if it's TN or IPS). I think 8th gen i5 is sufficient for daily dev work. The laptop keyboard is pretty decent compared to other brands (Dell XPS, HP Spectre, MAC, etc).
It does come with some flaws due to Lenovo's very bad quality control.
When I ordered my T480s, I had to exchange it due to very bad backlight bleeding that was worse than the normal circustances.
In terms of weight, it's pretty light, and is pretty good for travelling.
One of the other drawbacks of the T480s is that there is no official hard-shell casing. Honestly, I have no idea why some Thinkpad users have ideas against having a case on their Thinkpads, but I think it is totally viable to get one, as it would prolong the lifetime of the laptop unless you destroy it pretty hard.
I would opt to get the non-backlit keyboard, as I have 0 use cases when it comes to backlit keyboards. I think it gives a more sticky key feel to it as well.
Overall, I think T480s is a great choice.
Go out to hiring events and network.
It should be more like, pay $200000 because he's good rather than because he is a senior engineer. Companies should get rid of the titling bull crap and just let it all be based on salary.
Being a sociopath could be considered as a person's life choice, but it's not something to be considered bad. It's merely a medical condition.
There are lots of documentations that are about how-to's, not necessarily pertaining to technology (submitting forms, requesting accesses, etc). The problem is that there are A LOT, and it's very hard to go search for one that I need.Is there a way to manage this properly? What's the best way?I was thinking about writing a bunch of markdown docs and serve it locally... (None of the info can be...
If comfort is a big reason when you pick your headphones, if you have big ears or glasses like I do, then this is the way to go.
Audio quality is meh. I tried out my friends Sony WH1000XM2 and it has way better audio quality.
This can be Awesome, i3, bspwm, or anything out there.
You can also try using tmux or even gnu screen.
- Hours of sleep to feel fresh: at least 8 hours
This is a managerial failure in my opinion. Manager/company is proving that they are not doing their job by saying that. It's not a place to stay, although most of the places are always like that.
-Home: HHKB Type-S or Realforce 87u with Logitech G703 or Logitech M570
- No heavy desktop environments
- Getting rid of using mouse, try to be fully compliant of using just keyboard.
- Use a tiling window manager {i3, awesome, bspwm, etc}. YMMV on which wm fits your needs best.
- Use vim-vixen on firefox or qutebrowser for vim bindings
- EMACS + EVIL Mode or Vim
- There are a bunch of Terminal Emulators.. I use terminator, but you could get away with something minimal like RXVT, URXVT, or ST.
