The US Military: Bigger Polluter Than Most Countries

If the US Defense Department were a country, it would have ranked 59th worldwide in emissions in 2024

https://thebulletin.org/2026/08/mission-impossible-quantifyi...

I recommend any doubters to watch Abby Martin's documentary Earth Greatest Enemy.

Der Anteil nichtdeutscher Tatverdächtiger liegt bei Vergewaltigung/sexueller Nötigung bei 38,5 Prozent (konstant gegenüber dem Vorjahr)

So, 61.5% of all suspected rapists/sexual assaulters were German.

It honestly escapes me why you would judge the juxtaposition between everyday life of everyday people and a very specialised minority as snarky or curmudgeonly. Was there too much emotional impact?

There are so many comments on HN that would justify your attention with regard to this specific rule. This is not one of them.

I'm on the outside, looking in. To me this reads bigotry, whatever the originl point was.
Trump strikes deal with Putin to supply Russian diesel to U.S. and global markets

Didn't he previously announce 100% tariffs on India and China if they buy Russian petrol?

The legislation signed by Trump authorises tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil or natural gas, subject to specified exceptions.

I looked it up. He did. https://www.timesnownews.com/world/us/us-news/donald-trump-r...

German bus services are not publicly owned anymore and as private companies or conglomerates of companies they are free to implement whatever payment methods they see fit. I personally cannot speak to Nordrhein Westphalia or this particular bus company serving the airport but I had a similar experience in another state. The fare is significantly cheaper via smartphone (which refuses to install on Graphene) and the busdriver in question had no means to handle cash.

Ticket machines are still available, but only in highly populated areas or on locations like central (railway) stations. All others have been eliminated.

It's someone who isn't culturally Chinese commenting on Chinese culture to a non-Chinese audience with the framing of solving the problem of proselytizing "Rationalism" to Chinese culture.

This.

A person raised in the US since age 4 and citing internet sites like the Chinese equivalent to RoyalRoad and Twitter as generalised examples of Chinese culture, nationalism and rejection of empathy should not in any way be taken seriously. Proselytising only enhances the disqualification, as does his endorsement of a complete misinterpretation of the Three Body Problem. There was a lot of xenophobia going on in that book and the positive characters were all Chinese.

I'm sold. Thank you so much.

Can you elaborate a little, please? I've read all Mieville and before I venture into this monster, I'd like to read your thoughts. How does it compare to his other works?
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:58AM (#49904927)
Koenig used to have a tumblr, which is where he first published his sorrows, very intriguing. I follow him, but he has long gone silent.

Hiron Ennes is brilliant. Deep without fluff or lenghty exposition. If you liked The Works of Vermin - her other book, Leech is also brilliant. Another very good gothic fantasy novel is Tower of Mud and Straw by Yaroslav Barsukov.

I just finished The Tainted Cup and moved on to the next. I've read every Bennet there is, his writing is compelling. One of my auto-buy authors, same as Claire North. I paticularly enjoyed her Gameshouse series.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:37AM (#49904771)
It's not really similar, since qntm writes more in the vein of SCPs - paranormal occurences while The Memory Police is more sinister in an an ethical and political way, a bit like state mandated Alzheimer.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:19AM (#49904654)
It's brilliant and it touches on so many topics worth thinking about; I'm still of two minds re. the ancilliaries, slaves or avatars?

If you like scifi that touches on ethical questions, Iain Banks Culture series is very good in that regard, particularly Player of Games and Use of Weapons. I buddy-reread the last one with an internet friend this year and via our discussions got so much more out of it.

Re:EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member' on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:36AM (#49724486)
Not exactly misfired, the title is somewhat clickbaity, 5 diplomats pointed to several aspects of difficulties with Ceta - nobody really "rebuffed" anything. The article is also somewhat hostile to the EU in general, is that a common notion on the FT?

Anyways here's an archived link https://archive.is/RtfFb

Because Iran is a member of BRICS and BRICS establishes its own payment system as an alternative to SWIFT: https://observerdiplomat.com/brics-officially-announces-fina... on top of which they have digital payment systems with globally the most users - all of that bypassing US banks, so that the US no longer has a means to control/sanction trade and payments.

TL;DR the world is leaving the premises where the US unilaterally decides which population should starve.

The Chinese government does not concern itself with American AI, they have just reached an agreement with the BRICS members:

the BRICS countries have been developing initiatives focused on the ethical governance of this technology, joint industrial development, and the formation of independent technological alliances.

https://bricspolicycenter.org/en/publications/cooperation-in...

The attached .pdf gives more details.

You and I and METR and the public would all want the frontier labs to face adverse consequences if their products caused huge problems

That makes you very negative forces, according to the US president:

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/trump-says-very-negativ...

you will face criminal and financial penalties for damages caused.

No you won't. The US president, yesterday:

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday likened critics of artificial intelligence to "very negative forces" bringing up scenarios that will not happen, and said he wanted to make sure that the U.S. remains the industry leader. "We're leading China in AI. We're the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins," Trump told reporters at his Ireland golf course, when asked if the AI industry should slow down or be more regulated.

Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Sunday September 13, 2026 @03:48AM (#49681140)
He's right and I don't even like the guy. More importantly tho, painting China as "The Bad Guy" who has to be supressed at all cost until Dario feels he has a save advantage is a surefire way to minimise Chinese willingness to cooperation. Meanwhile, at the BRICS summit in Delhi, Xi Jinping proposed a cooperation and accompanying regulation on AI among the BRICS states and it was unanimously accepted.
Re:The Last 24 Hours Are the Opening Scene in a Horror Movie on Saturday September 12, 2026 @02:31AM (#49669507)
the only dangers with the current technology is a) massive loss of employment, b) deployment by humans to control critical infrastructure that LLMs shouldn’t be in control of.

Can we look at a possible economic disaster scenario for a brief second?

Bankers for OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly seeking an investment-grade credit rating after their potential initial public offerings (IPOs) to cut down borrowing costs for their ambitious AI projects.

The companies' bankers from Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs have been in talks with credit rating agencies. The goal is to tap into the $11.7 trillion corporate bond market post-IPO, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

That, right there, is a major concern.

But why wait? We can has global financial crash now:)

Example 8: like in this comment https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49619884 but isolate synchronised megahack on banking that adds one more zero to the US debt and all dependent systems and banking during runtime. Let the world's financial system take it from there.
There has been a big problem with migrants in the syrian civil war, most of which are gone again.

Without immigrants the ageing German population has no chance to keep their social safety net and as we see in the US, even when the social safety net is significantly reduced, the immigrant scarecrow will still have the desired effect for the populists because the immigrants are not the problem, they make, however a phenomenal scapegoat and will always appeal to the general populace. In consequence, focussing solely on immigration won't solve the fundamental problems and certainly won't help when the first waves of hungry climate refugees march north.

The consequences are border tightening and rearming and repopulating the military and marching confidently in the completely wrong direction. Dialog is dead and so is diplomacy.

Re-establish communication, not twitter. Collaborate on a wide front, analyse the data, compile potential solutions, discuss them, etablish them. Talk to Russia, talk to Ukraine, Defang NATO or abolish it. Talk to Iran. Stop the US propagating pseudo diplomacy via Kushner and send real diplomats. Look to invest in R&D for recycling techniques, carbon sequestering, substitutes for plastics, redirect military funding to massively expand renewable energy. Close all European borders the next time the US starts a war. There is so much to do.

Re:Why the AfD Wins on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:12AM (#49606114)
They want to deport undocumented migrants and remigrate certain refugee groups, such as Ukrainians.

No. They want an ethnical homogeneous country, hence their remigration institute. Feel free to educate yourself on the institutes own website: https://www.remigration-institute.com/

Re:The many mysteries and lessons of the Bayeux tapestry on Monday September 07, 2026 @01:14AM (#49594139)
Conservators use a precise tracking system to ensure that the total amount of light the artefact receives does not exceed a safe annual threshold. These limits are essential for ensuring that the tapestry remains in a condition suitable for future generations to study and admire.

Still, a private viewing and light exposure for Peter Thiel, who isn't even a patron of the British Museum, doesn't seem to be a problem.
