Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter, basically any app that allows you to "search my address book for friends" will do this.
All these services require either a email or phone number to sign up, so to search for friends who have also signed up for the service, you need to compare two data sets: emails or phone numbers of users you already have, and those in the person's address book.
You obviously wouldn't download your entire database of users contact information to the phone to compare the data sets, so you send the data set up to the server.

When I first read the title, I assumed this was about Twitter's new country-based censorship[1], which IMHO is a much more egregious attack on a freedom that the internet has made possible (speech) than the availability of for-profit media the OP highlights.

Ok, this is interesting, so now we're talking about hashing collisions, right? The idea might be that if you just start iterating through all possible alphanumeric combinations, that it's possible you'd stumble on a successful collision before you'd stumble on the actual password. It seems this would only be likely once the number of possible passwords was greater than the number of possible hash outputs (32^66 for MD5, right)? That would occur if the length restriction on the password was greater than the length of the hash output, or a broader charset was allowed for the password than for the hashing output.
I guess if this ever actually became a relevant concern, you'd simply keep adding a few extra chars to the hashing algorithm output to keep it beyond the range of reasonable.

Thanks. I was under the impression somehow that cracking the first few passwords would make it easier to crack the rest (by figuring out the salting scheme perhaps)?
Also, if there is no restricted range of characters, and a solid, random password is used, how can the attacker know when they have broken it, short of trying them all against the actual server?
Edit: Forget that last bit. I'm confusing myself.

So this is not the complete set of passwords, only the ones that have been cracked so far, using a dictionary? Scanning through the list, very few look like a random set of characters that a password generator would come up with. Does that mean that passwords which were randomly generated are, and are likely to remain, safe?

When I first saw this, I had a different use-case in mind, where a person would just take a picture of their own credit card for an in-app purchase, instead of a vendor using it to accept money from another person. (Hence the focus on developers.)
If you AB tested giving someone a screen where they put in their credit card number, or a screen where they just took a picture of it, you might find that people are more willing to take a picture. People are probably more comfortable with a photo of their credit card being taken on their own phone than someone else's phone. To the app, both of these are CNP transactions.

this is an active project, and can the team really not afford to pay Github something like $5 per month per repo?
This is the OP's complaint: once you're over 20 private repositories, you're paying $100/month. He wants stupid-simple, hosted, private git repositories, and lots of them. He probably ran a bunch of numbers on servers, storage, and bandwidth, and found that he run a simple, low-cost hosted git solution (without all the fancy web features) at a fraction the cost.
There was an opportunity in the market to make a simple, low-cost competitor to github, and he built it. Kudos.
