Ask HN: Has Hacker News killed the stealth mode start up?

Certainly there are still stealth mode startups out there. But, why?HN has become an awesome resource to test the waters. Whether just throwing out and idea or submitting a web app, the community here always responds honestly and thoughtfully. To me it seems the feedback you can obtain from the HN community out weighs the risk of some one stealing your idea.

My current employer scores a 2 on Joels test.
Wow awesome resources. Thanks again for the links!
Thanks for the reply. I will have to find that Joel article.

Ask HN: Interviewing with a startup, what questions should I ask them?

Backgound... I have been employed for a large non technology corporation for nine years. I realize I have been with them to long and for all the wrong reasons. But I'm still a little nervous about working for such a small company.I have an interview with a startup lined up and might apply to some more. I'm sure at some point I will be given the opportunity to ask them questions about the...

Re:How much should I offer for a 5-letter URL? on Wednesday February 10, 2010 @06:17PM (#1116354)
What is it worth to you?

Have you already been in touch with the owner? I ask because from my experience - they typically already have a price in mind. So, if you get that from them you will have a starting point.

I wouldn't wait for it to drop either. Take some action up front, to at least find out what they would sell it for.

Re:What to do with Ideas on Wednesday February 10, 2010 @06:12PM (#1116335)
Cute site. I had never seen it before...

What should be done with ideas? We all have a ton of them - or there is no shortage good ones. I think many of us feel like we need to keep them quiet in case we decide to use them... but we actually never will us all of them.

It seem like a pretty common theme in stories/post on HN that ideas are really pretty worthless. The real value is in how they are implemented.

Re:Jason Fried interview at Big Think on Monday February 08, 2010 @09:46PM (#1111379)
Good interview. He makes some good points on the cloud versus local security. Also, agree with his thought on interruptions and roles managers play in most companies.

I like that he sticks to his guns, he doesn't seem willing to compromise quality to make easy money.

Re:$10 ebook debate - who should decide? on Friday February 05, 2010 @10:47PM (#1105695)
Are ebooks a tangible artifact? I don't have the answer.

But, I think that ebooks should be cheaper than their paper counterpart. The paper version should be considered premium version.

Athletes as lab rats - awesome! And they're to dumb to care.

Wow, badass comment. I had no idea, thanks!!
I agree with pedalpete's comments.

But would like to add a couple of points.

One, from my experience, sorting through and dealing with all of the spam on craigslist is more work than it is worth. Look else where.

Two, for your potential new client, it is really all about your portfolio. Do you have a good one?

Re:Computers shouldn't make people feel like idiots on Thursday February 04, 2010 @10:36PM (#1102608)
This post is reminiscent of The Design of Everyday things. A book that receives much praise but really annoyed me. Not so much the message, but the way it was written.
Re:Comic Books on Tablets Could Be Amazing on Thursday February 04, 2010 @10:26PM (#1102595)
Good read, thanks!

I never considered comics on the iPad, but that could be really cool. Comics are something of a guilty pleasure for me - I have really enjoyed comics on my iPhone, specifically "The Umbrella Academy".

I hate that all the baseball player I grew up a watching have turned out to be dopers. Nearly every baseball player I loved as a kid has an asterisk next to their records. Also, I was pretty bummed about Floyd Landis losing his TdF title.

But on the flip side I think its pretty cool. I don't really understand why, maybe just because they are able to push what is possible.

What do HNr's think of athletes doping?
