"Developers" or "good developers"? Important distinction.
I can't see why they are any exception from politics, budgets, old systems, problems finding smart recruits, empire building, and lack of leadership, management and direction. We see them as something they are not. I think they are probably not far removed from the department of motor vehicle IT department and I sure don't fear them folks and the business analysts and help desks.

Everywhere else in government, IT systems are generally bad, or old, or underfunded, or outsourced to some foreign services company.Making anything happen is slow, political, time consuming, expensive and has a reasonable chance of failing. Why is it that anyone feels that government hacking, surveillance and spying would be anything better?Fear the NSA? You've got to be joking. In five years...
Much of the article is retelling of the storylines.
Can I just say, after years of neglect and falling behind the industry, fuck Safari.
I would have switched to typescript but I had to rename EVERYTHING from something to something else in order to use TypeScript. If that's how "compatible" starts, well, no thanks cause clearly that's just the start of the pain.
Compatible should be same files, new compiler = "just works".
I think Gates, even if he had to give an exclusive license to IBM for DOS, would have come up with an operating system for the other computer companies demanding one. Paul Graham is wrong on how this would have played out.
Gates already had the business model in place for licensing basic to computer manufacturers. It's easy to see he would have extended that to some DOS-like operating system.
Indeed he went onto do precisely that with Windows, leaving OS/2 to IBM and failure.
PG called this one wrong. Gates would still have come to own the industry as he did, whether or not the DOS deal with IBM was exclusive. The computer industry was always set to expand and Gates was always the guy to meet the demand. Gary Kildall had shown by this stage he didn't have what it took to pick up every commercial opportunity offered.
So it's because a religious person felt uncomfortable about a non religious person (Crockford presumably)?
Why do you assume your preference for IRC is everyone's preference?
What computer technology's not Chinese made?
Stand up cowards and respond to this excellent comment.
The conference organizers are making me feel uncomfortable.
Defamation. That's the word I've been looking for.
We smash people for this and don't blink an eyelid to the violence and privacy violations of our government.
TV software is so deeply ordinary.
It's a massive missed opportunity, but TV manufacturers just don't "get" software.
Please justify your assertion that there is a general belief that passionate means long hours. It's not true.
If your point is that great developers don't have to work long hours then that is what the title should be.

It's just hit me, I don't feel that anything really exciting and innovative has come from Apple for a long time.Is this what the computer industry's leading company has become?
What's left? Government demands complete access to every aspect of your life in every way.
No, wait, that's what they already have.
Tech guy sounds naive plus responsible for the outcomes and maybe should just accept lesson learned.

Is there a limit for some reason of the optical pictures that we could get of planets in other systems? What's the best theoretical direct image picture possible of a planet in another system?
Serverless isn't serverless either - it's pretending someone else's server doesn't exist.
Is this real or marketingspeak? Are there YC companies here who can describe what the actual benefits are of being a member of YC?
My understanding of all venture capitalists is that they like to sell their business expertise, contacts, network, but does this really amount to anything ordinary they just want a slice of the company?

Say I'm developing some awesome new thing, but I've built it on my own.I don't need money, but I wonder if it's in my interests to join YC anyway. Trouble is I'm not sure I see the benefits outside the money? Can someone point me to the benefits of being in YC apart from the cash?
If its patented then tell us what it is.
What was the benefit you envisioned?
Did you read this on an Xbox?
40k visitors per month isn't one per minute. It's anywhere from one per minute to 40k per second. Division of requests by time is the worst possible mistake in calculating load.
I'm sure I don't get that message.
