Your morality is not relevant to good journalism.
Re:I Am Deleting the Blog on Tuesday June 23, 2020 @03:59PM (#23619450)
Regardless, revealing someone's real name is orthogonal to clicks or ad revenue.
This. HN is so entitled - I want the perfect thing, then complain about them trying to be sustainable.
I was at a peaceful rally in Seattle last night, and a bunch of cops kept closing in and started shoving people.
Re:Please Pay for Your News on Sunday May 31, 2020 @07:23PM (#23373954)
That's a good discussion, but improving the model and sustaining the institution are orthogonal.

I do agree though that a lot of the problems are structural and systemic - that also does not negate the public's negative outlook towards journalism, or the sense of entitlement (read the comments here).

I do agree though that not enough tech people who can afford to don't pay for their news. Why? IDK. How to make them? Well maybe this post will persuade a few to do that.

Re:Please Pay for Your News on Sunday May 31, 2020 @05:46PM (#23373060)
News is not perfect, just like any other platform or business you use is not perfect.

I think paying for news and not reading all of it are orthogonal. If you don't like curation, RSS is still solid.

Do you ask for per-movie pricing from Netflix?
The different is that in the 90s, there was no clear evidence for pessimism about the future. The same is not true now.

Standard of living for most Americans is actually bad right now - trillions of student loan, no prospect of home ownership, no jobs, extreme income interest, weak authoritian governments, and let me know even start of climate change.

But hey, we have a new iPhone so I guess it's all fine.

False optimism about the future from older generations is nothing new - been happening for years now
Re:NextDNS Is Out of Beta on Wednesday May 27, 2020 @11:02AM (#23324409)
No my upstream is Cloudflare. Weirdly, I trust them.
Re:NextDNS Is Out of Beta on Tuesday May 26, 2020 @06:59PM (#23317444)
That's awesome and I've tried nextdns and loved it. But - and this is just me - I just don't trust anyone to delete my logs or not log in the first place.

That's why I'll probably not move off of my pihole

Re:Facebook Novi: Wallet for Libra Digital Currencies on Tuesday May 26, 2020 @01:48PM (#23314202)
Why should I give the benefit of the doubt to a billionaire autocrat who had done objectively more global harm than good?

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb fucks.

Re:I won’t buy ebooks anymore on Tuesday May 26, 2020 @10:12AM (#23311325)
For that reason, I mostly get books from not the most legal sources, and then buy a copy from a local bookstore. I either donate that book to a library or give it to a friend as a gift.

I get what I want while supporting a local bookstore and the author.

Here's mine: Jekyll blog with no js. Git push to my home server [1]. It runs in a docker container with a watch. The simplicity means adding a tor proxy in front was as easy as running another container.

If Rogan is MSM, then Spotify killing the open RSS ecosystem is even worse that I thought.

Since when is thinking about others you work with called "political correctness"?

I go to work to do my job and get a paycheck, ideally without drama. I don't give a day's ass about your MAGA hat.

Re:Notion for everyone on Wednesday May 20, 2020 @10:11AM (#23246958)
Seems like people in this thread want an E2EE alternative. May I mention https://standardnotes.org/.

It's a very well built notes app, cross-platform. The dev team makes really solid decisions (they say no more than any other company to feature requests).

I'm in no way affiliated to them, just a happy paid customer who agrees with their mission and values.

Re:Notion for everyone on Wednesday May 20, 2020 @10:08AM (#23246924)
I would recommend looking at Standard Notes. It's paid only but it's so worth it.
If this sets a precedent to sue say the telcos or banks or oil companies, I'm all for it.
I use ovh (although the tor network is saturated with ovh) and https://tor-relay.co ; literally takes 5 mins after vm is provisioned.

Here's a giant list of hosts you can look into - https://community.torproject.org/relay/community-resources/g...

I spent maybe an hour researching based my in criteria. You can host just an exit (most helpful), or a couple of relays (aim for 100mbps+, and decent bandwidth). You can get a lot for $5/month for each relay.

True although it's getting better every day.

I do use it frequently and do run a few relays, and that's probably the only way to improve it.

I would be surprised if many of the common public believed that warrantless searches of anyone are reasonable, while exempting federal elected officials from the same law.

Now's a good time to call you senator (if they voted against this) and tell them that they fucked up by weakening your rights and freedoms.

Then, get a VPN or better use Tor as much as you can.

Tesla has said that employees that feel uncomfortable can stay at home, but that will be unpaid.
It's great that they are promising that, but I'm just going to leave this here:

https://www.thedrive.com/news/26727/tesla-had-3-times-as-man...

Tesla Had 3 Times as Many OSHA Violations as the 10 Largest US Plants Combined

CEO Elon Musk once called California OSHA the 'most stringent' safety organization in the US.

Re:Pi-hole 5.0 on Sunday May 10, 2020 @06:46PM (#23137034)
Woohoo been waiting for this for months.

I host pihole on a home server in a docker container and spend 5 mins a month just updating it. No other administration. Definitely use it to get rid of trackers and ads.

(I should add that I also pay for about dozen publications/newspapers that I read frequently in lieu of not seeing ads)

Over an infinite period of time, sure.
