The EU also consists of its outermost regions where the GDPR applies, so your list is not complete. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_state_of_the_European_U...

Showing the error message "Your country does not want you to be here." is false. It should be replaced with "The owner of this website doesn't care about the rights of European citizens".

I also think excluding more than 500 million people just because one person is too lazy to think about privacy is kind of the wrong approach. You're only hurting yourself. Maybe you've read too many horror stories and half-truths about the GDPR. I propose to read up on the GDPR and care about your visitors privacy.

Re:Where in Europe is electric car a good idea? on Sunday August 27, 2017 @05:42AM (#15109985)
To many people this map has little value because it includes nuclear power. The article explains that this is a problem too.

So why not try to create a map that takes the nuclear waste/accident problem into consideration.

For example France would look at lot worse since they are mostly run on nuclear power and the northern European countries would look more like an "environmentally friendly lighthouse". Which they are, mostly because some of them get to use easily exploitable geothermal energy.

It would also be great to get an insight in the source of your data you've based this map on.

In Germany you can request an off-peak meter in addition to your normal power meter. Alternatively, you can get a power meter that is able to count two tariffs in one device.

There is no "talk of introducing this for decades" since it exists since decades.

Here's all you need to know: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niedertarifstrom

If you don't find our product interesting, well, that's really our problem. I'm here to have valid arguments, potentially to convince you of the contrary, I'm not here to get attacked for no valid/obvious reason.

I'm still open to have a conversation like normal human beings usually have, so if you have questions related to our crowdfunding campaign, please ask.

Vikings exists to further libre software, libre-friendly hardware and improve the existing, locked-up "hosting industry" that often works against their own users and at the very least don't care for their privacy.

Re:Vikings – Libre-friendly data center on Thursday December 15, 2016 @02:32PM (#13187449)
We've chosen the D16 because it is available now - with free/libre boot firmware, without binary blobs. The systems are very performant, despite their "age" (the CPUs we use were released 4 years ago (6284 SE), a system can have up to 32 CPU cores with 2.7GHz).

So from the performance perspective, systems based on the D16 are still able to compete with other, newer systems. From the "respecting your freedoms"-perspective, the D16 is unsurpassed AFAIK.

These systems are in fact a practical solution for free/libre software idealists and people who don't want to live in an Orwellian society.

That being said, relying only on this hardware would be foolish indeed. Not only because it will become too expensive to run at some point, like any hardware that gets older, but also because x86 seems to be a dead-end because it's becoming more and more locked-up.

We're planning to use openPOWER systems in the near future and move away from x86, to provide the best services for people who care about their freedom.

More will be revealed in campaign updates, we've just started the campaign and there will be campaign updates over the next 39 days that will interest you.

PS: This project has wings instead.

Let's hope you're wrong about that and libre computing finds its way into the data center! By the way, we do exist.
Re:Talos Secure Workstation on Saturday October 15, 2016 @05:08AM (#12713321)
They don't support Libreboot, but Libreboot supports them. They (Asus, Gigabyte etc.) give a damn about free/libre boot firmware, let alone Libreboot.

That's why we need companies like Raptor Engineering! Vote with your money...

Re:Talos Secure Workstation on Friday October 14, 2016 @07:04PM (#12711736)
You can choose the mainboard, add a CPU and RAM, perhaps a case and graphics et voilà.
Re:Talos Secure Workstation on Friday October 14, 2016 @06:59PM (#12711711)
This is great! Many people have been waiting for this. Potentially it'll also come with other boot systems.

Though I'd choose the mainboard only + CPU and add an old, passive GPU for price reasons

If you can't afford the mainboard or a full system, please pledge some money for user freedom.

Re:Libreboot – A free BIOS or UEFI replacement on Sunday October 09, 2016 @06:25AM (#12670635)
It seems highly unlikely that someone who made the effort flashing Libreboot to their laptop or buying a librebooted laptop from a supplier, would install proprietary software (Matlab) on their laptop because that misses the whole point.

Making some performance concessions and receiving something wholly libre in return is fine for the target audience.

Re:Libreboot – A free BIOS or UEFI replacement on Sunday October 09, 2016 @06:18AM (#12670606)
Regarding the taxes (referring to the EU only), Minifree didn't do anything wrong: If you buy hardware as an end-consumer, you're being billed the taxes of the originating country (in this case, the UK).

That's different for most services, e.g. if you ship a laptop to Minifree and they just flash it and send it back, they have to bill the taxes of your country. If they do any of it differently, they're doing a mistake.

There are other companies that can provide you with Libreboot, blob-free coreboot or other libre boot solutions on your Thinkpad if you're unhappy with their service (according to your experience that seems to be an appropriate response).

Minifree doesn't stand for the quality standard for the whole "libre community" as Albert Heijn (a supermarket chain) doesn't set the gold standards for the whole supermarket industry.
