Re:High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill on Thursday May 08, 2025 @05:51PM (#43931733)
I have been sharing this to try to raise awareness, the impact is going to be high!

Companies are really struggling to optimise their suppliers, it is pretty hard. If they start on bill of materials they can often sort by most common parts and then it becomes a graph problem finding “cheapest” paths between often traversing four tables bom <> parts <> suppliers <> tariffs.

The really hard part is mapping parts down to sku level to tariff codes. Specially at scale (think datasets with many million rows).

Either way we built https://www.searchtariff.com/?q=lights as an entry point and and have been getting more and more worried with the market as we help companies out. They are not ready for this at all and it is bitting deep. Let us know if you also need help mapping products to tariffs, we have a product for that!

Alternatively we also welcome feedback!

Re:So Much Blood on Wednesday May 07, 2025 @10:48AM (#43916449)
Fascinating article, fun that even blood has tariffs https://www.searchtariff.com/?q=blood

I wonder when we are going to start seeing proper effects of all these tariffs in the market.

Re:Meta outage on Tuesday March 05, 2024 @11:15AM (#39605506)
In my case I was doing iRacing with a cable, it requires the Oculus app to run for the link to work. Which in turn needs the login to be active.
Re:Meta outage on Tuesday March 05, 2024 @11:06AM (#39605375)
I was considering buying the Quest 3 this morning, this outage is timely. The fact that I can't use my perfectly working headset to play an offline game because facebook is down, makes me wonder if I should go for a different provider. Any recommendations? Excluding apple vision pro since it is too expensive.
Re:Stack Overflow announces 28% headcount reduction on Monday October 16, 2023 @08:06AM (#37898634)
Stackoverflow not having a public whitelabled version was their demise, not having something for a public community that is sellable without having to go through the Area51 provess was their demise. Discourse has been eating their lunch. https://www.discourse.org/customers
In many countries it is illegal to change anything with the vehicle without going through a homologation afterwards, unless the parts are already homologated. This happens because it affects security and can be a danger to others and you. The consequences can range from fines to the destruction of the car.

Any guidance on how to get controllers repaired under this directive? (EU based but don't have the receipts anymore)
Re:Trials begin on lozenge that rebuilds tooth enamel on Saturday May 29, 2021 @08:31PM (#27329530)
This sounds very similar to the toothpaste and dental products with polypeptides that these guys do https://www.credentis.com/en/publications/ (edit: replace link of products with publications)
ocd kicked in and ended up drilling through their site till I found the list of papers https://www.curodont-professional.com/wp-content/uploads/202...
these guys found a polypeptide that can repair enamel but they aren't very well known https://www.curodont.com/ edit: correct link for the enamel thingie is this -> https://www.curodont-professional.com/. I remember seeing some papers from them justifying this, but cant' find them
Re:Banks, QE, and Money-Printing on Tuesday November 03, 2020 @07:38AM (#24979062)
The printed money is effectively diluting everyone's else's money. So technically you could think of it as an indirect tax, because the overall currency value drops.

Similar to a company emitting new shares to pay employees. It's the shareholders who are paying the cost via dilution.

Does anyone know if european consumer laws can play a role here? I tried to google but couldn't find anything

Re:Making a News Aggregator (YouTube E01 – PT – Eng Subs) on Saturday January 19, 2019 @07:26AM (#18946678)
BLUF: Is that I have been playing around with a news aggregator for the past year and a half, and now I am trying to do a series about this. I am doing this in Portuguese (from Portugal) because there is very little technical content published in my language and I am often sad for it! I'm going to be adding English subs to this series, because a good volume of friends have been asking for it.

I hope you like it, I'm very receptive to feedback, feel free to opinionate ;)

It's called the Flettner rotor, it uses the Magnus Effect. Cool stuff but not exactly new tech. It gives a nice read, here's some links to wikipedia on the topic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus_effect and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotor_ship

I'm curious of what will be the results.

Not trying to sound salty, but just for general reference. A heatwave in the UK starts somewhere around 23C. At 20C they are already anouncing in the stations for people to carry water at all times.
Re:The Node.js Ecosystem Is Chaotic and Insecure on Monday April 23, 2018 @04:52AM (#16901687)
It's interesting to compare with JVM ecosystem, where each dependency can only have one version, and you get version collisions if multiple packages list different versions of the same sub-dependency. I feel there is more thought in adding sub-dependencies, while in the node ecosystem because you won't have collisions, devs don't really seem to care how much they add.
Re:What I learned from watching my iPad's slow death on Tuesday February 06, 2018 @02:21PM (#16318716)
iPad mini 1 are selling on ebay for 80£, I wonder if there isn't anyone exploring the business opportunity here for corporate software, were instead of buying 300£ iPads to show the schedule of a meeting room, you can just code against an old version of IOS and supply your software with hardware at a high discount. edit: had 30£ before, but was a bid not a buy now
Re:What I learned from watching my iPad's slow death on Tuesday February 06, 2018 @02:11PM (#16318639)
For the more tech savy this is where an open source operative system would make the difference (iAndroid). Though Apple should provide some sort of alternative for the less tech savy. One thing is saying that we don't support your browser because it sucks and you have alternatives, the other thing is saying "the 500£ you spent 5 years ago are gone, we don't care the hardware is in good state just buy a new one"
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2017) on Friday December 01, 2017 @03:13PM (#15826933)

Given that this starts with 'It is "extremely likely" that human activities...', that is enough for folks and organisations behind pushing that there is no global warming and it's not human's fault if there is. To say "they don't know for sure" and stop reading it.
I know a handfull of folks that already moved to germany and france. Personally I would move as well but my SO really likes her job.
