Not sure if this was AI coded but it seems to grind my browser tab to a halt. Could do with (spending some tokens on) optimization.
Re:The Brain Sandwich on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:17PM (#50144321)
I fully agree with the approach, but sadly that doesn't make the overwhelming amount of code reviews in the AI age much better. At best, it might slow down your colleagues' deluge of review requests a little. But also, you still have to spend time reviewing your own LLM code, of which there is more of and you're naturally less familiar with than if you'd hand-written it, so it takes longer to review.
Re:Neural Networks Are Already Clean on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:42PM (#50110742)
By 'rape cult' I assume you're referring to the zizians? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zizians - the internet is convinced Yudkowsky has nothing to do with them, so it's pretty disingenuous of you to claim otherwise without citing sources.
I think that's a bit disingenuous. We've only begun to apply LLMs in the real world and a lot of industries don't move very quickly. Not to mention that we're still very hardware constrained, we don't yet have the equivalent of an ESP32 chip we can just stick into any piece of electronics to provide state of the art LLM responses. But we'll get there, soon.
Re:Programming Isn't Special on Sunday October 11, 2026 @04:26PM (#50047469)
You two both prove my point. For both writing and acting there's high art and average slop. Do you think actors for a washing powder commercial give 110%? Do you think writers for the local newspaper give 110% on everything they do? You save that kind of stuff for where it matters, like big movie roles, or magnum opi.
My default mode is to phone it in at work. Been doing this for years, and I've been at my most happy when I have phoned it in. This is usually after some holiday or other personal life moment that gave me perspective on how little value my work really has to me. Occasionally I slip, get serious, 10X it, and get burnout. Somehow I don't seem to learn from this.
Re:Programming Isn't Special on Friday October 09, 2026 @06:31PM (#50027403)
Programming because a company pays you to do it is not the same as programming for programming's sake. If you think a company hired you to create artful code then you've got your priorities wrong. That's something you do on your own time.
Re:The last time my family was replaced by technology on Thursday October 01, 2026 @03:41AM (#49918887)
I think this is true, but I also think that AI has made the mental burden of putting up with a less than ideal job much lighter. I am no longer mentally exhausted at the end of a long working day, yet I have made a meaningful difference in terms of technical progress. And, at the end of the day, I am still bursting with energy about exciting personal projects I can now take on and make real progress on because I'm not dead at the end of the day.

Not sure if this fits, but the mechanic, rather than performing hard manual labor mounting horse shoes on horses, now just has to read software error codes during the day, and gets to enjoy driving his sports car in the evening.

"Claude, was this sarcasm?"

- You're absolutely right!

Re:LinkedIn CringeBot 3000 on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @04:27AM (#49269350)
Very nice. I thought it wasn't going to save a "You Go Girl" style story about "My Dick", but it turned it into a conference anecdote with a powerpoint slide about Richard III. Hilarious.
Re:The UK's War on Anonymity Has Come to America on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @05:57AM (#49255676)
If you really believe the UK is a privacy-friendly and anonimity-friendly country then you have definitely been brainwashed. I can't think of a first-world country that's worse than the UK in this.
Re:I'm a USB-C Maximalist on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @06:50AM (#48918891)
I too love USB-C, though sadly my laptop only has two of those ports, and only one of them can do power delivery and display, so my only choices are between having a powered laptop with only the built-in display, or on battery with external display, or carrying an extra power brick..
Re:Modern decor may be straining people's brains on Saturday July 11, 2026 @02:33PM (#48874468)
The moiré effect of vertically striped wood walls gives me a headache.
Re:The Eternal Sloptember on Monday May 25, 2026 @04:11AM (#48264583)
I think the ai-as-an-exoskeleton analogy is quite apt: 1. It still requires your intent to move in the right direction rather than being fully autonomous, and 2. It's too big and bulky to use for delicate tasks.
Re:My two-part desk setup on Saturday May 23, 2026 @06:32PM (#48252250)
I can recommend Vernal desks. I just bought a corner desk that's height adjustable and it feels like quality.
Re:Backblaze has stopped backing up your data on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @01:12PM (#47768358)
I dropped them when they silently dropped support for veracrypt/truecrypt drives: https://old.reddit.com/r/backblaze/comments/1ol0pgf/backblaz...

They're really proving lately that they are a company that can't be trusted with your data.

Stop minmaxing. Not everything has to be perfect.
Re:Bitcoin and quantum computing on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @06:37PM (#47682247)
The thing that supposedly sets Bitcoin apart from other cryptocurrencies is that it's deflationary and 'immutable', in that Satoshi is gone forever and any deviation of Bitcoin from his golden idea will result in undermining its essence. If Bitcoin can get quantum-attacked then, from a technical point of view, nothing will be lost. The Bitcoin core devs can issue a word-of-god statement stating that they'll roll back the chain to before the attack, and all is well. Then they'll change the cryptography. But at that point, is it still Bitcoin? Because you've undermined the immutability. If the core devs can just say "this core property of Bitcoin is now something completely different", who's to say that they won't change their minds about the deflationary nature in the future? All credibility will be lost. Now, if you accept that, is perhaps all credibility lost already? ...
Return them and get what instead? Every other popular phone platform is even more restrictive.

> I have a great psychiatrist who has me on antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, and mood stabilizers

Disclaimer: this is not medical advice, but have you considered being on less medication? I have seen a close family member become absolutely numbed from being on antidepressants, and although I have personally never been on them, I am highly skeptical that the amount of drugs the average American is being prescribed is healthy. My preferred choice of self-fixing is by quiet introspection, though I've had some useful experiences from therapy sessions as well.

Re:Ask HN: How to go back to listening to MP3s? on Saturday January 03, 2026 @07:14AM (#46475691)
I never stopped using foobar2000 on the desktop. I can recommend Evermusic on iOS for it's excellent playlist management, carplay integration and last.fm/scrobbling if you're ancient like me and still using that.
You will literally get a fine for going three miles per hour over the speed limit in many countries.
Re:Engineers who dismiss AI on Friday December 19, 2025 @08:29AM (#46325624)
As someone whose stance is to be extremely skeptical of AI, I threw Claude at a complex feature request in a codebase I wasn't very familiar with, and it managed to come up with a solution that was 99% acceptable. I was very impressed, so I started using it more.

But it's really a mixed bag, because for the subsequent 3-4 tasks in a codebase that I was familiar with, Claude managed to produce over-commented, over-engineered slop that didn't do what I asked for and took shortcuts in implementing the requirements.

I definitely wouldn't dismiss AI at this point because it occasionally astounds me and does things I would never in my life have imagined possible. But at other times, it's still like an ignorant new junior developer. Check back again in 6 months I guess.

Re:AI Needs More Power on Wednesday December 10, 2025 @02:26AM (#46215069)
This to me is the strongest proof that we are in a bubble so far.
Re:Comic Code Reviews on Thursday November 27, 2025 @02:33AM (#46066712)
The example probably wasn't the best pick to demonstrate this, but I could see this making sense for e.g. linter rules (with fewer panels per rule).
Re:Maybe You're Not Actually Trying on Sunday November 16, 2025 @12:47PM (#45946912)
Trying on every single thing you do is exhausting. I certainly don't have the energy any more to try hard at some personal life things when my work is stressful. I think it's good to do some introspection from time to time to find out what things might be draining you and preventing you from trying on something that you should be trying hard at.
