Re:The New Facebook News Feed: A UX Breakdown on Thursday March 07, 2013 @10:52PM (#5341996)
Completely unusable website for me running a relative recent version of Chrome on an older Ubuntu. Scroll functionality completely broken.

The irony isn't lost on me.

When I interview a candidate for a hacker-like position, I provide give them the problem constraints and hand them my computer.

I tell them to lookup anything they want.

The portion of time spent on Google directly correlates to their success.

If we can put a rover the size of a VW beetle on Mars, we can definitely put a couple of these on it too.

I don't understand. Are you saying popular sports like soccer don't require problem solving?

I write for MLSsoccer.com and I do some very similar types of analysis.

Here is something recent including similar network graphics and player average position. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/04/10/central-win...

I've done a bunch of stuff with centrality and other stuff, but that isn't exactly my target audience at the moment.

Idea for Overdraft Protection

Having gross rules for overdraft protection isn't acceptable in this day and age. At my current bank, I can either opt-in or opt-out.However, not all transactions are the same. For emergency purchases, I'm okay with the $20 penalty. Yet, at the same time, I don't want a $22.26 cup of coffee. These days, I can make bank transfers from my phone in real time. How about the capability to approve /...

Conversely, if you comment digital goods into software, is it still "computer code"?

I understand the embarrassment, but this isn't how science is supposed to work.

If we can't have glorious failures, we can't have glorious successes.

I agree. And luckily, we have the luxury of setting requirements for our prospective employers.

Some people do not have this luxury. And that is why you should care.

Re:Why the NFL bans iPads (and other technology) on Monday February 20, 2012 @12:01AM (#3611360)
Exactly correct.

There is a particular camera feed (called All-22) that monitors all 22 players at the same time. This particular camera feed is only available to teams, not outside data-collection agencies.

It's not just a rage on "American" football websites, but the real football too.

Moneyball has found itself jammed deep into soccer the last few years with varying degrees of success.

I'm involved in the startup scene for soccer "moneyball" metric development. If anyone has any interest, contact me.

I would have loved to sit in on this meeting ...

Ask HN: Getting started with GitHub

As a soon graduating CS senior who feels a calling to the startup scene - I felt an appropriate learning opportunity would be try contributing to open-source projects on GitHub.However, I am not sure how to start. I feel that my skills aren't yet up to the level that I could contribute solid code to any of the large projects.I am web developer at heart, so I have a strong knowledge of the main...

How do you determine "market salary"?
Re:Ask HN: When to put a language on your resume on Friday January 14, 2011 @03:02PM (#2105190)
Aha, a time to put forward my personal mantra about when you "know" a particular programming language. It is not perfect, but it is more meant to be thought provoking. It is:

"You only know a language when you know when not to use it"

Great reply. I have sent that along to my friend. I enjoyed it as well.
I don't do much UX, but I have a friend who loves it but is a little disillusioned with his education.

I am curious, what kind of schooling / experience do you have?

Re:Poll: Is HN your main online news source? on Friday December 31, 2010 @01:32PM (#2056023)
It is a little slow, but sometimes there is good stuff on there.
Re:Twins’ Facebook Fight Rages On on Friday December 31, 2010 @07:56AM (#2055295)
Yeah, that made me cringe too.

There are competent CS students that are also college athletes. ;)

Yeah, I feel that proggit has really gone downhill. I still enjoy a handful of other specific /r/ s thou - like soccer and boston.
Re:Ask HN: Review my app Moment, a new approach to delayed jobs on Wednesday December 29, 2010 @04:42PM (#2050273)
Lack of security.
My school requires internships. I don't know anyone being paid under $15/hr, and I know a few that are $25+/hr

Edit: Also, Boston area.

Then go to a uni with a required co-op or intern program
Re:Ask HN: Review my startup - GiftGoRound.com on Thursday December 16, 2010 @01:23PM (#2013029)
I think we should have a chat. Our two websites need each other.

Mine: undercoversanta.com (also early early beta - too late for this year's gift season).

You don't just fall straight down. Aside from air resistance, you will keep the horizontal velocity that the aircraft had when he fell.

The kid must have been quite a projectile.
