Smart Host | Berlin, Germany | Senior Backend Developer (Java) | Full-time | Visa | Onsite | https://www.smart-host.com/

Smart Host is giving independent hotels the digital marketing tools that help them stay relevant in the age of booking.com and Airbnb. Our CRM suite consists of 3 modules: Guests: giving the hotels insights about their in-house guests in order to tailor services to their needs. Campaigns: to send only relevant information to their previous guests and turn them into returning customers. Offers: to craft custom offers for potential guests who are requesting a stay. All our modules are using advanced statistical analysis hidden in the background to synthesize actionable information and give clear advice to our customers on how to treat and market to their guests while avoiding to spam them with irrelevant information.

We are handling customer data with all the care it deserves and are, of course, fully compliant with GDPR. We do not mine from any external data sources and instead solely rely on data the hotels are gathering during a guests stay as well as online surveys conducted directly with the guests. This leaves us with generally very high quality of data.

Smart Host is a two year old, VC funded startup that is run by two experienced entrepreneurs who each have successfully founded two companies previously. All the members of the technical team are highly experienced and are looking for support from other experienced and motivated individuals.

We are hiring a Senior Backend Engineer (Java/Spring Boot, Python), Salary: 65k - 85k.

I am not with the company anymore but I think the quote originated from a VC who made this analogy during a pitch and the founder liked it so much that it was used it most of the pitches from that point on. Of all the places I would have never thought I would get much critique on it on HN but I absolutely agree that it is lacking clarity.
Thanks, for the feedback. I will improve this and link to the english version next time as well as include info on team and salary.
Thanks for the detailed feedback! I have mostly improved on marketing material that was already there but I can see now it should probably be rewritten completely for this purpose.

And I will try to convince them to include salary ranges. I have tried before but did not get permission. It is not required by German law to post the salary and instead sharing these numbers is even less common than what I have seen from US startups, even if their salary levels are actually very good.

Ask HN: Do you get good applications from “Who is hiring?”?

I am curious what others success with posts on "Who is hiring?" has been. I have been posting a couple of positions for two different companies over the past two years and only got a hand full of applications from medium to lower quality candidates (not good matches for the respective positions). I don't think location should be the issue (Berlin) and Visa was also always available. Stacks not...

Re:My struggle to learn React on Thursday May 10, 2018 @11:17AM (#17039610)
I know that feeling. To me as someone who is not fully immersed in the JavaScript world the problem was also that there are so many different parts working together. You are describing that in your article as well. It helped me a lot to really just focus on one part of the machinery at a time and completely understand what it's purpose is and how it works exactly before moving on to the next. For example, take 1-2 days to learn webpack, then do the same for JSX and so on. Things become a lot clearer quickly when you understand why each part exists and it will make a lot more sense why things are done in a certain way.

JavaScript frameworks are more like loose constructs that don't hide the interfaces between the different parts very well. This is not a good or a bad thing but it is very different from, for example, Rails which I found much easier to learn as a whole. You can accomplish a lot with Rails without even knowing about the different gems of which it is composed.

Re:Ask HN: How can I do social good through programming? on Saturday May 20, 2017 @02:51PM (#14383731)
The best you can do where success is guaranteed is to teach underprivileged how to program for free and help them improve their situation by finding a job in the space.

Ask HN: Good curriculum/guideline to teach your employees how to code?

I am looking for a good curriculum/guideline to follow when teaching the non-technical teams of an organization how to code. It should focus on web technologies, so start with HTML + CSS, then some light JavaScript, then a backend language or (maybe more practical) JS as the backend language as well. Ideally it should have a bigger scope and potentially also include challenges or projects so...

Re:Ask HN: Why are trains not autonomous yet? on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @08:17AM (#13695178)
Then how can accidents like the I mentioned happen due to human error? Two trains crashed because they were both given a green light on the same track by the train dispatcher. That does not sound autonomous to me.

Ask HN: Why are trains not autonomous yet?

With all the advances in cars and drones it seems like trains should already be traveling without a person in the cockpit. To me it seems surprising that there is not even a discussion about this here in Germany where the was a train crash recently where a train dispatcher was playing a game on his phone and caused the crash because he was not paying attention....

Ask HN: Will the US electoral voting system ever change?

Obviously no elected president is motivated to change a system that brought him into office. Nevertheless it seems crazy that one candidate gets the most votes and another takes office. I am from Germany where 1 vote really means 1 vote. Am I missing ways that this process could be changed by? Or is this really on the president alone? What are the changes this will ever happen?

Unfortunately I did not purchase through a marketplace, back then I think they were less of a standard.

Thanks for your opinion! I will consider "shaming" him if he keeps ignoring me for another 2 weeks and report him to paypal.

Ask HN: Pre-ordered an ebook. No updates for 2 years and author is ignoring me

I pre-ordered an ebook on a (rather niche) software development topic about 3 years ago and it was not cheap. I was eager to receive the first version of the book but never did. The last update mail I received from the author is 2 years old now and he claimed that "the book is going nicely" and he would "send some updates soon". Over the past 3 months I have tried to reach the author multiple...
