Re:WHO advises against use of artificial sweeteners on Monday June 12, 2023 @12:00PM (#36295695)
I don't know what kind of an egregious organization the WHO is. First they let millions of people consume sugar alternatives for years, if not decades. Then they release a report saying those alternatives may lead to premature deaths. At this point, I feel like saying, F** it. I'm just gonna consume whatever the f** I feel like without ever reading about or listening to anything in the news.
Lower ranked US universities will grant admission to anyone who can afford their fees. Majority of the people coming to the US are from tier 3/4 colleges in their home country. There are few states in this particular country that have consultancies submitting thousands of student applications. Everything is taken care of - from the application form filling to preparing SOPs and letters of recommendation. Always a good idea to understand the ground reality before jumping to conclusions.
Because that would lead to an influx of an infinite number of people from a particular south asian country.
Re:Managers, Stop Distracting Your Employees on Monday April 03, 2023 @01:46AM (#35419001)
This always gets stated - "Removing roadblocks". But if the engineer isn't removing roadblocks on their own and collaborating with other teams, then they get labeled as "lacking initiative". People managers really don't deserve a place in the software industry. More often than not, they are the real roadblocks.
Re:Managers, Stop Distracting Your Employees on Monday April 03, 2023 @01:41AM (#35418977)
The 2 most important traits that managers desire are agreeability and subservience. Never argue with them. Even the slightest of power corrupts humans.
Hopefully, the new CEO can help them reach the 100% mark.

Re:ChatGPT Is Down on Monday March 20, 2023 @05:00PM (#35238615)
I'm getting "too many requests in an hour" error. Barely using Google for day to day tasks anymore. This thing is addictive and fast. Was able to set up a jest/rtl playground within seconds. I'm sure Google would have directed me to some outdated SEO crap.
most of them are coasting, hosting "bonding" events, socializing, holding useless 1:1s where you're supposed to "take the lead", just utter bs.
here's a listing for a D role https://www.themuse.com/jobs/meta/director-product-technical...

it's basically smooth talking.

If this turns out to be true, I hope it's a watershed moment in the tech industry. Lots of middle management in other companies will be sweating since they'll need to do something better than just asking "hey, when do you think this can be done?".
Re:FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank on Friday March 10, 2023 @02:59PM (#35100034)
I wonder if this has any effect on the deposit sweeping programs run by firms like robinhood, betterment and wealthfront. They promise 4%+ yields with freedom to take out your cash any time. A quick look at their partner program banks suggests they more or less transfer the deposits to the same set of banks.

This is basically a frontend person looking for some validation that they are so smart.
Re:Ask HN: Where are laid off employees gathering? on Monday February 20, 2023 @10:30AM (#34869009)
Each man for himself. I'm seeing a dog eats dog mentality.
This is like comparing the code written by an experienced 20 year veteran to the code written by a fresh graduate. Give it time, India will catch up. Lot of people in the comments taking a dig at the work ethic of people in India when most of them will cry a river if asked by their employer to RTO 2 days a week.
Re:Gitlab to lay off 7% of staff on Thursday February 09, 2023 @04:21PM (#34731666)
Do you expect the CEO to tell his employees that they are more likely to be laid off if they are paid more compared to their peers?
You don't need to "guess" how much to pay someone. The market dictates that. HR has pay bands. Raises are always in a narrow band. I don't know what kind of disputes you're talking about. If you ask any manager - describe your responsibilities succinctly, they will most inevitably fail to do so.
Run teams by being hands on. Just don't sit in endless meetings and help "manage" people's careers. It's all a bunch of bs.
Management is just a way to coast. I don't understand why we need to "manage" grown up adults. What we need are team leads who code and architect. Then give them the autonomy to run teams.
It just means they're trying to get a counter offer to improve their negotiating ability.
Re:Meta Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Results on Wednesday February 01, 2023 @04:37PM (#34618192)
Should have loaded those shares a couple of months back, smh. Up 70%+ since Nov last year.
Re:There are now 100M developers around the world using GitHub on Wednesday January 25, 2023 @01:55PM (#34522564)
I think the first thing that comes to mind is that there's too many programmers.
Google's "standard" till L4 is just leetcode. Average college students in that country are cramming 1000 leetcode questions. Even if 5% are decent, however you define decent to be, that's 50K engineers.
Google enjoys a cult like status in people from a certain south asian country which idolizes "prestige" and also produces millions of software engineers a year. I don't think they will have any trouble recruiting people.
Re:Carta lays off 10% of the workforce on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @05:17PM (#34345824)
You sound entitled tbh.
I find it amusing how everyone in software keeps touting a shortage of "talented" developers when there is no evidence. There's an army of experienced engineers in developing countries and each year millions of software engineers enter the job market each year.
Re:Microsoft Says It Will Give US Workers Unlimited Time Off on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @05:01PM (#34345609)
Unlimited time off is a scam to not pay employees accrued PTO when they leave since nothing is "accrued".
It's a total waste of time. Gets almost awkward.
