Good one, thanks!

Ask HN: What do you look for when choosing a conference?

A few days ago I put together a simple site with a list of DevOps conferences and some sorting buttons http://www.gotodevops.org/. I've overwhelmed by the positive feedback I received and contribution on GitHub from many people. Now, I'd like to improve the website and make it even more useful for people who are searching for conferences. Current list of features to add:- searchable list of...

Re:Ask HN: What are tools for writing test case documents? on Tuesday January 02, 2018 @01:59PM (#16054348)
I would recommend automating these kind of tests using a test framework. If you do it right, the scripted tests will also serve as a documentation. Look into tools like Robot Framework, Cucumber etc.

I'm currently looking into how JJB could be used for simple scheduled jobs. But isn't the setup described in the article basically the same what you can do with Jenkinsfile?

Regarding private git repo, have you looked into Bitbucket? They offer unlimited free private repos. I've been using them for about half a year, very happy so far.
Thanks for the feedback and the screenshot! Yes, there are only a few icons on the site currently, I just wanted to show the concept and get feedback before I put more effort into that.

I haven't even heard of the term menulet, will look into this.

Author here. When I'm at a meeting and a colleague of mine is presenting something I often wonder what's that app they have in their menu bar. But I rarely ask because I don't want to interrupt the presentation and by the end of it I usually forget.

So I put together this simple page listing a few apps. For now it's macOS only and only has a few icons. Any comments?

Congratulations! How did you promote the books? What would you say was your most effective promotion channel?
Re:Ask HN: How do you choose a name for your product / service? on Thursday December 08, 2016 @06:37AM (#13129707)
Here's a story by one of the founders on how Stripe came up with the name https://www.quora.com/How-did-Stripe-come-up-with-its-name

Wow, you can write a whole book on the topic! Lots of good info in there, thanks for sharing.

Yes, that's what I've been thinking too. The only thing that holds me back is that I'm going to put a lot of effort into promoting the product launch and generate traffic to my domain. If I switch the product name (domain) later on, all the effort might be wasted. I know I can redirect the old domain to a new one but still, backlinks might lose some weight.

Ask HN: How do you choose a name for your product / service?

Any tips you could share on how do you come up with a product name? Do you validate the name with your friends / potential customers or do you just go with the first thing that comes to your mind? I'm thinking that having a good name is quite important but is it worth spending too much time on?

This is a great angle I haven't thought of. I'm guessing passively looking candidates might be quite a big chunk of the market. Given a financially interesting offer they might apply for a job which they would otherwise just skim through.
Great, I'll be in touch! :)
Absolutely! Public company email is mandatory, I didn't even consider having a job ad without it. Good point about the application form, it sure makes the applicant feel like just another record in a database.
I'm thinking that launching just another job board won't get me anywhere. I'll have to either a) spend heavily on advertising (which I can't afford) or b) differentiate myself from all other job boards out there.

I live in Finland (5 million habitants) and based on my research only about 5% of job ads include salary. It's not part of the culture to discuss salaries publicly so it's very well possible that companies won't be willing to go public.

On the other hand, I think it's quite promising that there are even a few companies that are already publishing their salary offers, despite most of the competition not doing it.

I see it as my job to convince them it's good for their business and start a little revolution. Maybe others will join the bandwagon?

Ask HN: Are you more likely to apply for a job that discloses salary upfront?

I started to work on a job board to improve my Node.js / MongoDB skills and I'm thinking of actually launching it. But how do I make my board different from all others? I'm thinking of having a mandatory salary field so that each job would contain a salary range.Stack Overflow data shows that job ads with salary receive 75% more clicks....

Ask HN: Parents, how do you keep your kids safe on the internet?

I have a 6 year old daughter and she'd like to get her own computer. She has her own bedroom so if I don't set any rules I think she'd be spending a lot of time with the computer in her own room.I'd really like to buy her a computer. What I'm concerned about is that sooner or later she'd come across the sites that could be harmful for her.I don't think using web filters is the right way to go...
