Not low quality: succinct.

And no, I'm not going to debase myself and beg you to remove something you implemented out of pettiness. It's your error, and it's unfortunate (for me) that you wield your power like this.

So I'm out then.

Re:Queen Elizabeth II has died on Thursday September 08, 2022 @03:26PM (#32770751)
I genuinely believe the interesting aspect of Elizabeth's death is the focus it can (if we allow it) put on the inherent injustice of monarchies. But OK, you don't. Fine, its your site. The temp ban/rate limit was kinda low key uncalled for. I was civil.
Re:Queen Elizabeth II has died on Thursday September 08, 2022 @03:24PM (#32770724)
Thanks, by the way.
Re:Queen Elizabeth II has died on Thursday September 08, 2022 @02:17PM (#32769601)
Dang, does this post 'gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.'? Should it be on HN? I don't believe so. The only intellectually interesting thing about the monarchy is how we let them persist now all the fake divinity is gone. Which is what my comment is intended to spur conversation about. So claim what you like, it's your site, but I believe you're wrong.
Re:Ask HN: Easing wife onto Linux laptop How to? on Thursday September 08, 2022 @01:11PM (#32768495)
I made our TV an Ubuntu box. Now she knows how to use Ubuntu as well as she does Windows and iOS. Which is to say not at all, really. Click browser, browse.
Replying to myself because I guess I care too much about this, but both DS9 and the Battlestar Galactica remakes were heavily inspired by what B5 did.

People say the Sopranos ushered in the 'golden age of TV' and I woudlnt deny it had larger mass appeal, but shows like B5 did it first.

Is there a word for self inflicted schadenfreude? If so, that, I suppose.
Agreed. Choosing Apple is like watching The Big Bang Theory. Or buying some burnt trash from Starbucks.
That's not funny, that's sad.
Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Thursday September 08, 2022 @10:01AM (#32765633)
To be clear, people buy iphones because it's a status symbol with good marketing.

But also nothing youve written prevents what both of us want. The average user can use their iPhone as they always have. Those of us who care about freedom could install what we want. Apple sells phones. You dont need to defend everything they do, eh, they dont actually care about you or me.

Re:AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @11:13PM (#32760729)
Haters will continue to push the overton window back towards freedom. Your welcome.
The production values weren't very good for the time the show aired. It was about the seasons long overarching plot, and the characters who grew over those seasons which were relatively unheard of concepts in TV SciFi at the time.
Re:Why companies are interested in Myers-Briggs types on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @08:07PM (#32759137)
My horoscope suggest he's a Reptilian.
Yeah that's good scare mongering but I dont buy it. I betcha most of that stuff is megacorporate bloat that can be extricated without hindering the average users experience.

Mozilla, unfortunately, is dead. Like Firefox did from Netscape before it during the dark times of the IE ubiquity, when people claimed what you claim now, a new browser that supports true freedom must rise from Firefox's ashes to begin the cycle once again.

43% is huge. Firefox had significantly less when it won hearts and minds.

Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @07:58PM (#32759037)
Then let those users rot. To give up a fundamental component of computing because a few desperate users figure out how to sideload some garbage on their phones is one of the silliest arguments I've ever seen. Apple locks shit down because it makes them more money, plain and simple.
It should be free since it was trained using free software.
How many people use adblockers? Is there any chance manifest v3 will lead to enough users abandoning Googles Chrome to build a community around an open alternative, like we did when we abandoned IE for Firefox all those years ago?
Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @02:38PM (#32754506)
Because that's not equivalent to what's happening here. In this scenario, we bought a 'luxury' sedan (apple watch) that is able carry goods (quake 1) but Toyota wants you to pay them $100 dollars a year for permission to do that (dev account). And they get to decide what goods you're allowed to carry (app store).

It's nonsense.

Re:Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @02:15PM (#32754119)
Ah, I see. If it helps you, that's great. Apologies if my comment hindered that for you.

Unfortunately it just makes me indignant/kinda depressed.

Re:Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @12:30PM (#32752781)
Yeah, but it's only speaking to a small subset of the lucky folks who can do that.
Re:The future of cryptocurrency is at stake in Ethereum’s switch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @12:28PM (#32752753)
Yes, but power in ETH PoS comes from the validation/staking. It's value comes from the validators consensus, no? Which you cant do without money. Or am I wrong? I'm trying to decide if I should get on board or not. If this isnt true, what is the point of staking?
Re:Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @12:23PM (#32752688)
Agreed. Without the pressure of 'do this or die', these wealthy men can enjoy work. Because at any time, they can simply leave.

Kinda like Mike Rowe waxing on about Dirty Jobs and work ethic. It lacks the full weight of the cost of failure.

Re:Is engineering management bullshit? on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @11:41AM (#32752114)
The technical team leader. Staffing is management/HR at the behest of and under the direction of the team lead.
Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @11:10AM (#32751673)
Thank you for the correction, as little as it does to change things.
Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @11:07AM (#32751638)
Yes thats a bad thing, too. Two bad things.
Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @10:17AM (#32750955)
That's very helpful, thanks. Still totally bullshit though.
Re:Is engineering management bullshit? on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @10:00AM (#32750751)
I think you're being as disingenuous as TFA.

There are just as many useless managers as there are useless reports. The reason you see so many 'managers suck' posts is because they're in a position of authority over the talent they manage. That's all.

Management shouldn't mean authority, it should be like HR or IT, a support role.

Re:Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @09:55AM (#32750680)
And of course, to run this yourself, you need to pay Apple 100 dollars for a developer account and even then, the app will delete itself after 7 days.

Youre brilliant, you paid for the watch, but you cant use it the way you want because of Apple.

Edit: I have been corrected. 100 dollars buys you 1 year. 7 days is 'for free', so it's basically a tithe.

Re:The future of cryptocurrency is at stake in Ethereum’s switch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @09:44AM (#32750510)
It doesn't in any way rely on exchanges.
Re:The future of cryptocurrency is at stake in Ethereum’s switch on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @09:42AM (#32750488)
That's just for mining, though. I can be part of the validation/consensus process for the BTC blockchain by running a node which you can run on anything with a 500gb hard drive. People use Pi's to do it. You need zero bitcoin to run a node. This is the difference.
