Re:I Miss the Old Internet (2019) on Sunday June 13, 2021 @07:28AM (#27491657)
In 20 years somebody will write an article about missing this ‘old’ internet from 2021.

I wonder what they will miss.

Looks like the app’s domain was also seized.

How good is poker AI these days?

Can the best players still be profitable against computers?

I understand why the new advanced chips could face shortages, but why are there shortages for these basic chips. Can’t they be made anywhere, and more easily?

Have there been any other known cases of similar action around the world?
Re:How long does a bottle of wine last after it is opened? on Sunday January 24, 2021 @01:38AM (#25889872)
Let’s say a half filled bottle lasts 4 days in the fridge.

The article doesn’t mention much longer a transfer to a half-sized bottle lasts with very little space for oxygen?

Ask HN: Do current giants have more or less influence than Microsoft in the 90s

For those that lived through the antitrust period Microsoft went through in the 90’s, how would you compare the current slate of tech giants and their influence relative to that period.Did Microsoft exert more control for their period than current tech giants do now? How did their hold and influence on markets compare to current market leaders in present times.

Ask HN: Are there good reasons to not open-source voting machine software

Hi all, I wish to keep this apolitical and focus strictly on the technology from our perspective as developers/technologists.If voting software and machines were government owned and they wished to open source the software for the sake of transparency - would there be any good reason not to do this? There would no doubt be some benefits to making the code publicly accessible, a lot of which we...

This all feels like you’re getting a false sense of security.

Great, you are reducing your footprint but what remains is undeniably vast.

FYI- there is a summary section at the end of the article if it reads too long for you.

> You can compare the use of alarm clocks to smoking or eating hot dogs.

Wow. That’s a big statement, surely comparing alarms to smoking is a bit much?

That’s an attention grabbing headline number, but what it doesn’t tell you is what would alternatives mean in terms of co2 emissions?

Let’s say we take cement out or drastically reduce it. Where does co2 sit in increased consumption of viable alternatives.

It doesn’t say if he knows the source, and if he declined?
Re:Nvidia's Arm deal sparks quick backlash in chip industry on Monday September 14, 2020 @06:46AM (#24468687)
Separating the ARM specific concerns could someone shed light on the generalised apprehension around Nvidia?
My other question is will this make pre-IPO sales fairer?

If historically sales have been over the phone there is the chance people are getting deals based on relationships or priority access.

You could make the case that this will make the process more transparent.

I wonder if this will make it easier to build up larger pre-IPO positions.
Telling somebody else they are wrong about their own personal experience deserves a downvote, which I don't have enough points to give you.
This will leave an enormous black hole in news discovery.

The real question is what new discovery methods will fill this massive hole.

It won’t be newspapers, that’s for sure

Re:China is building a GitHub alternative called Gitee on Friday August 21, 2020 @11:28PM (#24241268)
Makes sense. Lots depend on Github for CI/CD.

Having your country shut off from Github could break a lot of stuff.
