Re:A4 Paper Stories on Friday January 09, 2026 @05:44PM (#46560488)
I've participated in (and now have been a ref for) a robotics competition, First Lego League, a couple of times. The robots can have a height of up to 30.5cm (12"), and that's usually quickly checked before each round.

Since there's pretty much always some A4 paper lying around near you, probably a copy of the rules, in most situations we just hold up a sheet (rolled up if you're feeling fancy) next to the robot. Much quicker than finding the ruler that's probably in use (or misplaced) somewhere else :D

The problem is that apparently, often enough that is just not the case.

On laptops, the LED is not powered with the camera, but controlled by it. And on smartphones, if it's a green dot on the display it can obviously be bypassed in different ways given the right vulnerabilities.

Also, aside from that, your condescending attitude is frustrating.

What are Jack and Jill parties? (DDG only gives me generic listicles for how to plan a wedding shower.)

You have to enable a setting to see apps marked with that anti-feature when searching
Re:Introduction to GrapheneOS on Sunday September 14, 2025 @06:25PM (#45243893)
As described in the README, the combination of root access and locking the bootloader has the caveat that it's easy to brick your boot partition by accidentally making changes to it. That causes the signature check to fail, and then you have to unlock the bootloader and wipe all your data to re-flash it.

I don't know if there's any good solution to this, since all this seems to be necessary for the security model.

EDIT: Wait, isn't this what A/B partitions are for? (ie, you can brick one partition and still boot from the other) Also, shouldn't it be possible to flash an image signed with the correct keys without unlocking the bootloader and wiping the user data?

You would spend some time outdoors being active, which is good for you but also entirely possible without killing animals. I'd argue that's the same for meat.
Re:Nintendo Switch 2 Dock USB-C Compatibility on Thursday September 04, 2025 @05:27PM (#45132405)
> DP has a HDMI compatibility mode that allows a DP output to output a HDMI signal, but at the wrong voltage. The external adapters are just level shifters to bring the signal voltages into compliance with HDMI, but their entirety passive devices.

That's DP++, which is not supported on all DP outputs, and notably is not supported by the USB-C DP AltMode.

He did make a "sequel" addressing that: https://youtube.com/watch?v=SkL9vzW7nY0

You usually can't do much against anti-repair or anti-consumer stuff alone (especially in organizations), and that people often feel like they're the only ones who care in a five mile radius. The idea is that the clippy pics activate people to actually do something, because they feel like that precondition of others also caring and wanting to do something is fulfilled.

I sometimes think about trying keyboard things like this, but I'm pretty much always on the go with my laptop. My desk at home can be described as just the horizontal surface that happens to be near where I sleep and sometimes do other stuff, not my primary place of doing computer activities.

Is there some kind of very portable ergonomic/alternative typing device? Maybe something designed for steno or whatever. It would be cool if I could just hold it in my hands, since often that'd be more comfortable than the surface my laptop is on.

You actually can connect two machines via USB-C (USB4 / Thunderbolt) and you get a network connection.

You only get Link-Local addresses by default, which I recall as somewhat annoying if you want to use SSH or whatever, but if you have something that does network discovery it should probably work pretty seamlessly.

Depends on your definition of sale, but influencing elections comes to mind.
AI scrapers aren't a subset of the users/readers/audience of a website, they are parasites to society that harm their prey by causing huge costs.
I suppose they're going for a trade-off between "cheaper" and "satisfying" (as in, the satiafaction of sticking it to unethical shitty companies)

TFA = The Friendly Article (or with the other word that begins with f)

It's used as a shorthand for "the article we're talking about"

Probably depends on the city, but where I'm from it's difficult (but probably not completely impossible) to get a Döner for 5€ :(

14TB of mobile data usage sounds fun, how did you do that?
With all else being equal, I'm willing to believe that more intelligence would lead to greater income. But if you're claiming that IQ is the sole/main predictor for income that'd be a hard [citation needed] in my opinion.

I think users "want" it the same way smokers "want" cigarettes.
Genuine curiosity: How do you know?

You only re-export the unchanged parts. EVFILT_AIO is the same in 0.2.0 and 0.2.1 (which is different - in practice and to the compiler - to EVFILT_AIO in 0.3). (Only) c_void is the same in 0.2.0, 0.2.1 and 0.3 (again, in practice and to the compiler.)
Re:Jaywalking Legalized in New York City on Wednesday October 30, 2024 @06:37PM (#42001267)
That heavily depends on where you are. I can't speak for everywhere, but in the cities I'm in it's fairly common to cross a red light or a road you're not supposed to cross.
Re:Syncthing Android App Discontinued on Sunday October 20, 2024 @12:17PM (#41896377)
I've been using that one for a long time now. I recall that when I got started with Syncthing (some months to a year or two ago?), it seemed to have been the folk wisdom to use Syncthing-Fork, but I don't recall what the reason was.
Re:Who Owns Nebula? on Friday September 13, 2024 @05:39AM (#41529576)
Do you mean a video sharing site? Maybe self-hosting PeerTube might be something for you. It's designed with federation (with other instances via ActivityPub) in mind, but the FAQ say that can be disabled. Of course, there probably are other software projects (like maybe DTube) that have different priotities and ideas, might be worth a bit of research.
That looks awesome!

I was wondering if it requires a 100W PD supply, but according to the manual everything with at least 20W should work.

Genuine question: What makes you believe that an employer would decide to pay you more when they notice that they're paying you less than other companies would? Why wouldn't they just think "Oh, neat, we got such a bargain!"
Re:Mozilla introduces updates to tab management in Firefox on Friday September 06, 2024 @07:39AM (#41465198)
I also switched from TST a while ago. I agree with the others that Sidebery feels a good bit more polished. It also has quite a few more features, like panels for bookmarks and closed tabs and, most importantly for me, integrated tab groups. But if you just want "less buggy and prettier TST", you can probably just turn all the other stuff off, it's pretty customizable.
Re:Mozilla introduces updates to tab management in Firefox on Friday September 06, 2024 @07:24AM (#41465103)
I've had this happen once a few weeks ago, and enabled auto-snapshots, so I think if it happens again I can just restore the most recent one. Also, in the past I've had Firefox crash in some weird way where it lost all my tabs, so I hope I'm safe from that too. (Tho it hasn't happened in a long while.)

Re:Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport on Saturday August 24, 2024 @05:54PM (#41341961)
Not directly related to the arrest, but to Durov:

His Telegram channel is somewhat odd. It's a mix of what you'd expect (updates / general stuff about Telegram), some slightly weird stuff (highly praising countries he visited or talking about his oh-so-high-quality sperm and how he's the biological father of "over 100" kids), and then there's just shilling for some random watch-ads-to-get-coins things or whatever that totally aren't scams built on Telegram's new mini-app thing and TON (which is Telegram's cryptocurrency that they can't legally sell as theirs). You can take a look for yourself here: https://t.me/s/durov

In Germany (/ the EU?) we have electronic ID cards that can be used for a few online services.

The physical card can communicate via NFC, and there's a smartphone app you can use with it. For PCs, you can buy some fancy NFC interface if you want, but you can also have your phone act as a reader, the PC connects to it over the local network.

Maybe something similiar could work for banking cards. They all have NFC anyways.

On the other hand, you might as well just have an app that is registered with the bank on your computer/phone (like how it works for smartphone NFC payments) and skip the card.
