Re:OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe on Thursday July 16, 2026 @12:03PM (#48936379)
The linked site actually says "North America", which has been incorrectly editorialized to "USA". This is misleading because their announcement appears intended to also cover Canada.
Re:Android "Password Store" client for pass discontinued on Sunday October 20, 2024 @11:02PM (#41900321)
“pass” in this context refers to a GPG-encrypted file based password manager: https://www.passwordstore.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pass_(software) https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pass.

“pass” itself can be used in many contexts, but is primarily a desktop command-line tool. “Password Store” is the Android client for it.

I've written a series of posts on practical "recipes" for how to use Ledger (one of the leading plain text accounting systems) effectively in more complex situations beyond the basic tutorials: https://felixcrux.com/blog/ledger-practices

Thank you!

Do you have any suggestions for how the formatting could be better? Is there something outright broken in how it displays in your browser, or is something simply sub-optimal?

Content warning: Be aware that the linked article opens with a large photo of bodies of killed civilians. It is not explicitly "gory" but it is upsetting.

If the author happens to read this: Please consider not putting that front and centre without a warning.

If a mod happens to read this: Please consider adding a content warning or similar to the link title or somewhere else prominent.

Re:The Dunant subsea cable on Thursday February 04, 2021 @11:40AM (#26026969)
I'll take any chance I can get to link to this wonderfully sprawling 1996 article from novelist Neal Stephenson about the laying and landing of transoceanic cables: https://www.wired.com/1996/12/ffglass/

Yes it's long, but it's so worth it!

Emacs, same as for everything else.
Another similar example is Tracy Kidder (a writer, not an anthropologist) being embedded with a team at Data General, resulting in the fantastic book "The Soul of a New Machine". I can't recommend it enough. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Soul_of_a_New_Machine
Not as originally implemented for use in the Linux kernel. It's meant to identify the original author, who is signing off on agreeing to contribute the patch as open source.

See https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/SubmittingPatches section 11: “Sign your work”.

> On a more serious note, it's kinda scary to what lengths people will go to continue doing what they've always done, even if it destroys their very homes.

The thing is, in this case, not continuing to do what they've always done would effectively also destroy their homes. The mine is the town, and ceasing production to save the existing town site would just result in a lot of empty buildings once ~60% of the population has to move elsewhere for work, and the remainder follow because they were only there to support the miner population.

Re:Prison Bankers Who Profit from the Inmates on Tuesday September 30, 2014 @07:27PM (#8392022)
One would hope so, but I suspect that they don't care about public perception, and a surprisingly large slice of the public would actually be supportive of punitive treatment of prisoners' families.

Because of this (quoting from the article):

"To impress state corrections officials and gain their business, JPay spends heavily on industry conventions attended by agency heads with contracting authority. During a 2012 convention of the American Correctional Association, the company threw what it called an “END OF THE WORLD PARTY” at a Denver wine bar that bills itself as “about you, and your inalienable right to the unbridled enjoyment of food and wine.”

The invitation, printed on a disposable beer coaster, promised “a bash, JPay-style: fuerte tequila, hand-rolled cigars, a live mariachi band.” Conventioneers could catch a JPay shuttle leaving from the hotel “ALL NIGHT LONG,” it said."

Re:Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition] on Sunday April 07, 2013 @09:02AM (#5507058)
I'm very happy with my Samsung Series 9.

Different marketing people mean different things by "full HD", so I'm not sure if it meets your specs, but 1600×900 is decent enough for me on that size; and it really, really is a gorgeous display.

Battery-wise, when I was travelling and had wifi/bluetooth off, low screen backlight, etc, it was pushing 9 hours.
