Re:Why friction is necessary for growth on Monday September 29, 2025 @06:07PM (#45419389)
Stop thinking in terms of current generations and today's LLMs. Your mind has matured in a pre-AI world (even pre-internet), and we are using LLMs with that background .

Think in the children of the future, growing with a much more advanced and ubiquitous technology, and the mental models they will have. Who knows what will happen, but seeing how slow education and regulations adapt and how fast big companies and consumerism grow and move, I'm not very optimistic.

68,000 macs to run a program to download something seems a bit too much to me.

same feeling
Same situation here. Just thinking of printing an album of the last 3 years gives me chills. I recently learnt about "photo culling" software, which is what professional photographers use to skim through all the photo bursts they shoot and pick the best. I didn't try any yet, but you might like to google the term.

This is fantastic. However, I only see the use case of messaging through the Meshtastic clients. Is there any other thing one can do over this setup, like Gopher or IRC?
Super cool! Congrats on the launch :))
Re:3D Printer Auto Bed Leveling Mesh Visualizer on Tuesday December 19, 2023 @04:48PM (#38702143)
This is neat, today I learnt. Can an Ender 3 do mesh leveling?
That makes sense, and definitely adds value to the app. Thanks for sharing!

That's the correct pronunciation, yup
Great idea and fantastic implementation!! This is very well aimed to actual painters. Are you a painter yourself, or did you have any help from a painter?

Awesome job

Oh, I will try, thanks so much!
Job.

Art station is a very recent thing :)

You can use SDFs (signed distance functions) to express your objects in a mathematical form. It has its pros and cons. One of the bigger cons is that most tools use the polygonal approach, so you'd have to build a lot from scratch.

Lots of SDF examples in ShaderToy[2], and many introductory videos on YouTube (I specially recommend Inigo Quilez's channel[2] --co-creator of [1]--, and The Art of Code [3])

I've been using it for +1 year now, love it.

I have only one complain: I tried everything to configure it to open in a specific position in the screen (top left corner), and for FSM's sake, It's impossible! (Windows 10)

The editor looks fabulous, great job! although I am actually very excited and impressed with the eepp GUI framework.. it's pretty sick! I wish we had more like this in rust..

chromebooks are a thing in US schools, aren't they?, but not so much in Spain, they don't regularly use computers in public schools (at least in the area we live). But I do have a small Asus laptop with a great form factor.

Thanks!

Yeah, old C64, even a DOS, is also something I consider.. but I also wonder about the real value into going back to the 80s.. we are in 2023, after all!

yeah I took it as "she won't use that" which was hilarious. But you are right, what I pretend is to remove the addictiveness part of current computers, and make it a useful, exploratory, learning tool. Which will demand effort from her, and will get her tired much sooner than youtube.

Nice, gorgeous machine. But I was looking for something more generalist than maths and programming. Although you say there's a plethora of hobbyist software too.. I'll take a look, thanks!

I cannot agree more with you, hence the "(if any)" in my comment. Playing with other kids is our highest priority, and that's also something I also plan to work on harder this year (engage more with other parents, less extra activities after school, etc).

But on one hand I'm a "maker" and I cannot stop thinking in crafting new things, and this could help others too.. and on the other hand I see she has an immense interest (and capability), which I'm always repressing.. and I'd love to find a good balance.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment :)
