Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:50PM (#50348217)
You have the last two units right (stddev, max-min spread) but not the first two.

FWIW I tested this a couple times on opus and it got it instantly.

I'm...weirdly unsurprised by this.

I've had a lot of luck getting LLMs to do interesting things with raw tabulated data.

Here's an example, plug this into the model of your choice:

Here's a puzzle: what is this data from?

  39.0 2582 8.8 24
  39.2 2592 9.6 22
  39.4 2607 5.4 15
  39.6 2619 11.5 30
  39.8 2620 10.8 28
  40.0 2622 5.9 16
  40.2 2642 13.1 28
  40.4 2654 8.8 18
  40.6 2656 3.6 9
  40.8 2665 5.7 12
This is raw data I have laying around that's not from the internet and not part of any training set. It should be able to tell you A LOT about what's going on here, including multiple specific "make and model" type things.
Also AMD and Micron? Yeah it's not huge but hand waving that doesn't give me confidence in the analysis
Welcome to PCB design only imagine spending an order of magnitude more on tooling.

This is actually my fear for SWEs, there is SO MUCH PRECEDENT for making the entire career path completely dependent on a single company selling a subscription at absolutely deranged prices.

We desperately need to keep local models competitive with the hyper scalers. I won't want to be beholden to them and their whims forever. With anthropic now restricting game reverse engineering I think we're about to cross a Rubicon of censorship.
Idk about the paper but I know a lot of trans women and I don't think any of them haven't been stabbed/assaulted for being trans at least once.
Re:Amazon to buy satellite firm Globalstar in $11.57B deal on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:15AM (#50275093)
Much like their customers, I suspect Amazon themselves don't actually ever do anything other than buy random shit they won't ever use...at least on the space side. I know a bunch of people who work out at the cape and it sounds horrid.
I'm glad people are working on this. The open source CAD world is not doing well (not you Blender<3) and even if you're willing to pay the big bucks for any of the proprietary options, they won't run on Linux without rather high levels of applied violence.

That leaves cloud only options like on-shape which means they get to hold your project files hostage. I'm not sure why any business has ever come to the conclusion that losing control of their design work is acceptable but here we are.

You have the power to stop them. There are plenty of technical opportunities out there and every internal security memo with your hn handle on it is another piece of grear they can't use and time they've wasted ratcheting their own paranoia.
Half the people here are working to help them, intentionally or unwittingly.
Deny defend depose I suppose
Go join your local Pink Pistols/Brown Berets/SRA/whatever chapter.

The leftist gun community is mostly focused on arming the LGBTQ community at the moment though. Your chances of getting canoed while trying to stab a trans woman are way up over the past couple years.

It's not so much cultural political leaning as it is authoritarianism. The US is completely fixated on Left vs Right but most people can't fathom another axis affecting them.
I cannot articulate how much they fucking love this stuff. If you want to actually help your community you become a paramedic or a teacher...

...but if you want to have absolute power over your community, you become a cop or a mayor.

The cops are obsessed with all the shiney toys that let them surveil and kill people. They will buy literally any wildly unnecessary thing they can get their hands on if it tickles their sense of cool. That's why they're driving around in GWOT surplus MRAPs with GPS synchronized emergency lights (Google it) and complaining about not being able to buy the latest drones from China so loudly.

Time for American 2.0 update/patch/modification/changeset/???
He already has been. Flock cameras routinely draw the police into situations where they're not need and cause shootings/high speed chases that end in dead bodies.
I wish you all a safe and fruitful Halloween night
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:02PM (#50121967)
What if I don't like supporting fascism?
This is...kind of my fear though. We need some pragmatism in politics but the American public fucking hates anything other than "my team best team forever". I say this as someone who is staunchly more left than probably 95% of everyone here... Building an algorithm that ensures absolutely any deviation from the trend is swiftly punished brutally is not necessarily a feature of a functional society.

You may think you want this because of Sinema and Fetterman but...we already know they're shitheads because...they blatantly do shithead stuff. Replacing the time spent gleaning all the nuance behind a vote with a party whip algorithm is not going to somehow make voters better at voting.

Hundreds of people have been tracked down and killed with flock cameras unnecessarily. The police routinely escalate interactions as a matter of procedure until they end in shootings.

On average over 1000 people are killed by police each year. A police officer is by far the most dangerous person you'll likely interact with on a day to day basis.

Re:Meta and Microsoft Limit Employee Use of Claude AI Tools on Thursday October 08, 2026 @01:18AM (#50002022)
That's the thing though. My hobby projects have been doing better than ever. My job is more or less the same it's always been, just with more unit tests (that cover...who knows) and slightly better tooling/CI because it's now less tedious to fix that shit when it gets mangled.

AI is very good at creating small codebases. It still sucks shit at maintaining huge ones where someone needs to understand how the codebase works.

I've seen what happens when companies just vibe code an entire mega codebase and it's really bad. AI is fucking terrible at grand architecture decisions.

It only takes the combined weight of the entire free press, a complete social media blitz and hundreds to thousands of citizens risking felonies to just straight up destroy the cameras.
Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @03:05PM (#49982638)
That's kinda what I'm getting at I think. We've created a patchwork hell full of arbitrage and petty harassment and everyone's just kind of fine with it
Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @03:01PM (#49982594)
You can create trusts for a few bucks. It's not an inherently rich people thing
Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @02:55PM (#49982519)
Can I just take this moment to mention that I think we need a better system for car registrations across the board? I don't like that there are all these edge cases with titles, insurance, inspections/smog, window tint, plate expiry, taxes etc whenever you move or even travel. It feels like we've just turned vehicle ownership into a profit opportunity for the police to harass everyone over completely inconsequential nonsense the second you cross any state line (emissions/insurance aren't nonsense but bear with me pedants). Similarly it creates a mountain of work every time you move.

I wish you could just register under an LLC or trust or something wherever and have a generic plate that can go anywhere and force the states to agree on a set of standards that apply across the country.

Alternatively allow people to keep their plates indefinitely like phone numbers. Yes, this creates arbitrage opportunities but maybe we should be bringing up the standards of the arbitrage states instead of having assholes threaten everyone with guns for random infractions.

I'm kinda just throwing ideas out there but this current system is Kafkaesque.

That would be great, but the railroads have torn up most of their own lines and refuse to move anything that might be needed inside of a month from ship date because PSR means they only run one mega train periodically. They also routinely refuse profitable runs because they're not as profitable as their other runs and they calculate success only in terms of profitability rate.

US railroads think the ideal railroad is one that owns no track and carries no freight.

I for one welcome the incompetence. Godspeed to whoever is able to deploy a build to the whole device fleet that burns SoM boot protection fuses to an image that doesn't do anything hard bricking their entire network.
Re:Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing on Sunday September 13, 2026 @03:24PM (#49687698)
There are plenty of people here working on surveillance tech. Is this the world you want to be building?
Re:Will There Be a 7G? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @09:09AM (#49683576)
The headline is somewhat detached from the article BUT

Of course there will fucking be a 7G. Capitalism doesn't just demand it, capitalism literally needs it to continue working.
