LoL... sharing your IP with a hacked server doesn't really affect me... but when I use magnets links from my home IP, I keep being harassed by Comcast.
why are they still using it?
Re:Simplicity of IRC on Wednesday March 13, 2024 @04:23AM (#39689162)
IRC is great and you can do SSL connections and also encrypted DCC transfers on some servers (Abjects/#moviegods, for example)
Time to "borrow" software back from China... "thanks NSA for doing your job...."

What's the percentage of Wikipedia that was created by "notable" people?
I wish we would call lobbying BRIBES, because that is what it is and it is illegal, I hope.

Re:Ask HN: What is not going to change in future? on Tuesday March 12, 2024 @09:51AM (#39679504)
One thing that's not going to change is that things will keep changing for no good reasons because engineers need something to do.
Probably won't work, but since you can search for the number you want with Gvoice, did you try re-registering it?

except that they don't enforce much rules when it comes to food. Two examples are fish and olive oil... you probably will never know if you got what you paid for... They just don't inspect. It's probably a bigger problem for fish, because you can get fish that taste about the same but is full of mercury or other toxins.

Re:Ask HN: What does a neighborhood network look like? on Monday March 11, 2024 @09:07PM (#39675016)
there's central box(es) that look like this that connects nearby homes: https://i.imgur.com/W2L7Nz3.png

Fiber often go to these boxes and then copper to your home, and Comcast like to lie to you and tell you fiber goes to your home

Re:Biden proposes 30% tax on crypto mining on Monday March 11, 2024 @09:04PM (#39674982)
Also, they are already taxing crypto transactions. (They are treated like stocks in the USA)
Re:Biden proposes 30% tax on crypto mining on Monday March 11, 2024 @08:59PM (#39674946)
I don't think that's true in the medium term... definitely not in the long term... and maybe not even in the short term.
Re:Biden proposes 30% tax on crypto mining on Monday March 11, 2024 @08:51PM (#39674888)
corporate tax increases will just get passed on to consumers...

And mining taxes on power usage is just ridiculous... why don't you add an extra tax on gold used for jewelry too? and luxury cars, yachts, and anything that isn't really useful?
