“It’s not the first cell, it’s not the first microbe, it’s not the first anything, really,” said Greg Fournier, an evolutionary biologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

You might avoid common pitfalls by reading "Eight Signs A Claimed P≠NP Proof Is Wrong": https://scottaaronson.blog/?p=458.
Some of them can, if they are in good physical condition. There's a reason why there haven't been any females who swam across until now.
From the article:

'On Vancouver Island—about 10 times closer to the mainland—the genetic diversity of any future grizzly population shouldn’t be a problem. As we’ve seen, “there’ll be males coming over to mix up the genes,” McLellan says. And now, perhaps, the odd female too."'

By that definition, horses that were introduced to North America by humans in 16th century are not invasive because they existed in North America 10,000 years ago.

Watch the video - this roundabout's islands are designed to be driven over by semis and trailers. (Hopefully the drivers of those vehicles know that).

Reminder to turn off f.lux or "night light" or "night shift".

My score was at 98th percentile, and dropped to 75th after I remembered I had a blue light filter on.

Re:Sequel: A structured English query language (1974) on Tuesday May 14, 2024 @03:30AM (#40352546)
Wikipedia thinks its the same language:

"The original name SEQUEL, which is widely regarded as a pun on QUEL, the query language of Ingres,[14] was later changed to SQL (dropping the vowels) because "SEQUEL" was a trademark of the UK-based Hawker Siddeley Dynamics Engineering Limited company.[15] The label SQL later became the acronym for Structured Query Language."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL

Indeed, reading through the paper, I think it's too similar to modern SQL to be considered a different language.

Re:David Lynch presents 'A Thinking Room' on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @03:17AM (#40061506)
They aren't exactly passing the collection plate around. It's much more transactional:

"So you had to have a special kind of paste before you went to go practice your Yogic Flying, and the paste cost, like, $150, and the Yogic Flying cost thousands of dollars to learn, and then your badge to get into the dome to practice the group meditation cost $100 a month."

"It cost thousands of dollars because Maharishi said that Americans don't value things unless they pay a lot of money for them."

Re:Alexei Navalny has died – authorities on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @03:49AM (#39439222)
I assume you never heard of Roman Protasevich before the plane incident?

Navalny on the other hand has done many notable things and was in the news all the time before his death. His is the first name you think of when you think of Russian opposition. This is not a valid comparison.

This sounds very similar to the books manually curated using Ilya Frank's Reading Method: http://english.franklang.ru/index.php/ilya-frank-s-reading-m...
"For instance, in Guyana (South America) it's ⱯI, and in Australia, IⱯ"

That's a joke, right?

Re:Breaking Superconductor News on Thursday July 27, 2023 @05:02AM (#36890839)
If this is real, what about this discovery that made it happen now?

Is it a case that some technology is now available that unlocked this? Or is this trying something and seeing if it works?

Could this discovery have been made 10-20 years ago?

20 hours???

Your comment makes it sound like you think it's a small amount? I get that it's over 35 years, but still!

Free downtown bus service stopped in 2012 (after being free for 40+ years).
Re:A Supermarket Visit Brought Down the Soviet Union on Monday January 16, 2023 @05:14PM (#34406153)
The text says "kotlety" which are basically meatballs:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutlet#Cuisines_of_Russia,_Ukr.... But I don't understand what I'm looking at either. Maybe it's the ground meat mix that you shape the cutlets yourself before frying? But what is the bread-looking half on the left side?

The large teeth may have been useful to hit vital organs on large prey that used to be common but now extinct. No large prey - no sabre teeth needed.
Wikipedia has a few convincing hypothesis. One is that sabre teeth are important for biting deep and reaching vital organs on large prey. After the megafauna went extinct, so did saber-toothed animals, and this adaptation was no longer needed.
Re:English to Emoji – Yandex Translate on Sunday December 05, 2021 @03:08AM (#29447643)
This is amazing. I think it is trained on well-known works. Opening of the Raven, translated to English->Emoji->English:

Once upon a night of despair, while I was thinking, weak and weary,

Over the many compelling and curious volume of forgotten tales —

While I nodded, nearly asleep, suddenly there came a tap, Only a weak resume, write my chamber door.

"'Tis the information," I muttered, " tapping my chamber door — Only this and nothing more .”

Re:I Bought a Business for $0 on Sunday March 07, 2021 @04:01PM (#26379728)
Until fairly recently clickbait didn't exist in English too. Once the concept got a catchy English name it spread to other languages.
Re:Game Design Perspective: Stardew Valley (2020) on Sunday January 24, 2021 @02:42AM (#25890173)
I really like the story of how Stardew Valley was created. Programming, music, writing and art was all created by a single person. It started as a project by an unemployed man to improve his programming skills.

The game is just so warm and heartfelt and it feels like the author's personality and vision really shines through. I wonder if it's possible to make a game of this quality by a team of people or if it some aspects of the game will suffer.

Some documentaries about how the game was made:

Re:ATT services down due to bombing in Nashville on Saturday December 26, 2020 @03:51AM (#25542225)
Pearl Harbor is not seen as terrorism. It's seen as a military attack on the United States, and an act of war.

United States hasn't declared war since 1942: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war_by_the_Unit...

"The last time the United States formally declared war, using specific terminology, on any nation was in 1942, when war was declared against Axis-allied Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania, because President Franklin Roosevelt thought it was improper to engage in hostilities against a country without a formal declaration of war. Since then, every American president has used military force without a declaration of war."

Re:Abstract Wikipedia on Thursday July 02, 2020 @07:35PM (#23719303)
My first reaction was to look for a Wikipedia article for an overview of this. I couldn't find one yesterday, but one was created today:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia

Trust but verify: I will trust you will do X, and will do Y in return, but I will verify that you are actually doing X. Example: mutual disarmament treaties with Soviet Union, Iran nuclear deal.

Don't trust: I will not even engage with you and will not do Y. Example: the belief by some that US should not engage in high-level diplomatic talks with North Korea on disarmament because North Korea has no incentive to follow through on its promises.

Re:Paul Allen has died on Tuesday October 16, 2018 @02:15AM (#18227035)
The library was named for Kenneth S. Allen, Associate Director of Libraries from 1960 to 1982, in recognition of his years of service to the Libraries, and in appreciation of a generous gift from his son, Paul G. Allen, co-founder of Microsoft.

"I would love it if I saw a new version of a language come out and it removes language features, wouldn't that be a change!"

"I am still bitter about the initial .NET core rollout which was a crapshoot and had no parity whatsoever with .NET Framework."

Those two statements seem to be in direct contradiction with each other. Would you like iron-clad parity, or would you like to break compatibility in an effort to shed bloat?
