News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Reading the first paragraph and I’m thinking that in the UK that era is already here!
I’m expecting delivery of a used Lenovo yoga thinkpad simply to run one piece of software that I previously ran on an older intel Mac using a virtual windows drive, sadly the security on that software (dongles!!) will not and possibly will never run on new Apple silicon, so I’m gonna be lugging a win machine around for any projects that call upon that security software. I worked with the developer and tried a a patched software key for the same security, but sadly it didn’t work either. I’ll still be sticking to Mac for most of my work as I just prefer the way things predictably operate, but I am now going to have a windows toy to play with too, even if it’s actually for work !
That left me with a big satisfied smile - hard to believe these people still exist, but they do, well done I say, well done!
Re:Long Range E-Bike on Sunday March 01, 2026 @05:37PM (#47211455)
That’s a fantastic build, I only wish e-bike manufacturers would offer similarly spec’s bikes, a days ride is very rarely 30 km, so 200 min or more like 200 km range would be a bike worth investing in. I feel similarly about electric cars too, charging mud route or at destinations is rarely possible so 300 miles or greater are the only vehicle ranges I see as remotely practical. ( yes, I cycle in km and drive in miles , weird maybe) Oh yes an edit - speed, who rides so slowly, those ebike speed restrictions are crazy low.
Re:I miss thinking hard on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @06:13AM (#46884410)
Thinking hard and fast with positive results is like a drug, ah those were good and rewarding days in my past, would jump back into that work framework any time ( that was running geological operations in an unusually agile oil exploration programme )

Re:Rivian's Also E-bike is like nothing you've ever seen on Saturday October 25, 2025 @10:52AM (#45704367)
It looks good and has many soold features that meet most needs, but seriously lacking the simplest mud guard prediction that almost all no sport bikes need
Re:Show HN: 1 min workouts for people who sit all day on Saturday May 24, 2025 @06:07PM (#44084087)
Websites don’t always work well for many, go and work somewhere with no internet….
Re:Show HN: 1 min workouts for people who sit all day on Saturday May 24, 2025 @06:06PM (#44084083)
Looks great, looking forward to using this, many thanks
Wish it were cheaper - but I bit already - I think at a lower price you would move multiple times more
Sounds dreadful !!!

Re:Starbucks' new CEO wants to make Starbucks a coffee shop again on Wednesday September 11, 2024 @01:31PM (#41513512)
About time, it was once, briefly, the go to coffee shop (Singapore days then), then it was never again, it just became a sweet drink place like so many others - with high computer tolerance levels which kinda locked in customers, sm not sure I would ever trust them to make a decent coffee again though
Re:Simple sabotage for software (2023) on Tuesday June 18, 2024 @01:20PM (#40720076)
Wow that reads like every executive in any meeting
I really enjoyed reading “Rivers of London” by Ben Aaranovitch, I read the second one which was not quite in the same page turner realm, but I plan to read more of the series.

Re:Airbus Shatters Record for Jet Orders as Demand Soars on Friday January 12, 2024 @11:18AM (#38969891)
Following recent news from Boeing, it’s not really surprising, I by far prefer to be on an airbus than a Boeing these days, since 747 days really
Best solution is to avoid using those products, or anything that invokes them.
Yeah, that been a while already!! But I still use google stuff as Microsoft apps are a real a real pain to use when it come to security setups a utterly useless really!!
Re:AskHN: Do you like Notion? Isn't it overrated? on Monday July 24, 2023 @03:53PM (#36853362)
Have a look at FSNotes, I use it on Mac and iOS and it works well for me, I previously used notational velocity and loved it, have also a liking for Joplin but it doesn’t synch as easily as I would like, FSNotes does all really well! I tried Notion, it was not for me in so many ways!
Wow - best thing I’ve seen in a long time!!!
Re:Ask HN: How did you migrate off Evernote? on Friday July 07, 2023 @06:28AM (#36629676)
i left evernote ages back - they for some reason turned all my text entires into pdf files !!! I tried them again much later when they were promising better things, but compared to what i was using, it was slow and not as enjoybale to run, so never looked at it again. I ran Notational velocity for ages, but have tried obsidian and Joplin (Joplin was v good for almost all uses) but I've settled on using FSNotes which works very well for me. Again, it's got some weird stuff but its easy to ignore. Joplin was probably th best all rounder, by synch of phoen and laptop could lead me questioning what was where, so it didn't get relied upon the same as FSNotes does. I still use both in reality though. Joplin has that free high quality app appeal - it really is better than almost all those pay to use apps. I've tried so many its unreal, i even have a super long subscription to some app (no longer on my devices) - big on promises, lousy on delivery.
Best alternative I ever found was hacker news - rarely visit Reddit since finding hacker news
Re:27 years later and the Psion 3a is still wonderful on Sunday June 04, 2023 @10:46AM (#36185996)
I considered my hp100 and then hp200lx far superior devices!!
Re:Ask HN: Is Hacker News slow for anyone else? on Tuesday March 14, 2023 @03:50PM (#35157342)
Yup, but am also wondering for its issues with my browser - kagi as it’s locking up frequently too!!
I’ve never ever trusted any of those kind of sites - even sharing document sites raise the same questions. For personal use, ok, for professional use, never!
Re:I Use Cheap Notebooks on Friday March 10, 2023 @01:31PM (#35098778)
Fine choice in notebooks but why are you writing in bear??
That headline made me laugh out loud - in a restaurant!
