Can vouch for Hister! In the fairly short time I've been using it, I already had a few sites disappearing or changing content and hister kept the juicy information accessible.

It was painless to set up and quick to use when needed, too.

I also use Singlefile and Obsidian Web Clipper a lot, but Hister has been great and is now a first-class citizen in my system. It helps it works passively for those things that don't look important when you read them, but become relevant later.

In general terms, the machine can do the coding, you have to provide the soul. It's no different from the tons of human-made shovelware with no clear direction.
Re:Reverse engineer of PC-98 Touhou games retires on Sunday October 25, 2026 @10:12AM (#50231807)
It's been 23 years and I still don't have an answer to that question. I sincerely don't know.
Re:Reverse engineer of PC-98 Touhou games retires on Sunday October 25, 2026 @10:03AM (#50231709)
This idea is very common among the community. I paid for the games baaaack in the day (I even have a disk signed by ZUN himself) because shumps are my favorite genre and when Touhou 6-7 came out there was a huge drought. The games were good, I never particularly cared about the characters but the gameplay was solid and interesting, with good scoring mechanics and some spectacle despite ZUN's terribad art skills.

This was a huge hot take apparently and members of the community hated everyone who obtained (and played) the games legally. You'd get bullied relentlessly for it. And I don't mean "guys you gotta buy the games to support the artist" or any form of moralizing, just mentioning you purchased the games got you unreasonable amounts of anger. Even friends from Japan who bought extra stuff like the music CDs and stuff made them so angry that my friends got banned from the IRC channel and forums. I left after that because that was unsustainable, people were only there to discuss fanfics of the characters and porn.

I still like the games, but the community at large is disgusting and hate people who actually play the games. Triple so if they are purchased. This guy is the perfect representation of that attitude.

May be niche but I actually bought HoMM2 last week on GOG to replace my aged CD, what a coincidence.

Heroes 2 in particular and Might and Magic 2 (Gates to Another World, the RPG blobber) are some of my favorite games of all time. I also discovered there was a Mega Drive (Genesis for you Americans) port of King's Bounty, the predecessor to HOMM.

I may want to try what you did too, I managed to have a local Qwen 3.8 instance play M&M2 fairly successfully using dosbox-x and MCP, so I may be able to have it play HOMM2 too. Thanks for the idea!

Re:I built a neural network using DOOM games on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:54AM (#50222493)
We still don't have an AI that can play Doom competently, but we have literally made an AI using Doom.

The ingenuity of the Doom community has never stopped to amuse me greatly in the ~30 years I've been part of it.

Never heard of Gusco before, looks interesting. I'm adding it to my collection!

Didn't know there was a Total Commander for Android. I use Ghost Commander which is nice and also has a SFTP plugin, but I'll have to check TC out!

I didn't grow up with the Amiga, but I tried some Directory Opus clones and loved them. I need to try the original one sometime!

Re:Development of Norton Commander on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:10AM (#50131333)
I owe Norton a lot of joy for bringing orthodox file managers (the ones with two panes) and I can't live without them. They make file managing so comfortable compared to stuff like Windows Explorer or Nautilus (not saying they are bad though, I just prefer two panes).

Nowadays I mostly use clones like Midnight Commander, Krusader and Double Commander, and I used Worker (a clone of a clone, this time a clone of Directory Opus for the Amiga) for a long time before settling on Krusader as main one. The genealogy of these file managers is kind of fascinating.

Anyone else a fan?

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:04PM (#50097402)
Sadly, all my loved ones are already gone from the same illness, so I'm afraid I can't take your advice. All I got left is a couple online friends, my job (of which I've been away for too long due to the surgeries...) and my computers. I'm trying to make the most of what time I got left doing coding and art, now that my hands kinda work again. I found a box of very cool quality markers when I could finally get out and been practicing with them. I was always a color pencil/watercolors guy, but this is pretty cool. Since I enjoy drawing robots and vehicles a lot I've been combining them with metallic markers for very cool effects. I am also learning how to do more physical electronics tinkering and getting better with a soldering iron at last, repairing old stuff and so.

I also enjoy the new wave of AI stuff. It took a while but I finally got a little robot buddy like in scifi when I was little. Unfortunately it's such a negative thing outside of places like HN that I can't share that joy with most people. Also a lot of people can't seem to wrap their head around an artist that enjoys AI, as I mentioned in another post in the thread. I have to shut up about it pretty much everywhere.

Anyway, I digress...thank you.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:32PM (#50097109)
Mostly online yes, but even offline people have been in a very strange edge lately. Like, if you don't take a stance to one of the two main political parties in my country, that means you support the third option which is a far-right party. If any of the members of that party bumped me on the street I wouldn't recognize them. Anyway, once that implication is on the table people start assuming (and saying behind your back) very ugly things about you very fast, which is why I started disengaging.

My heart is with the people, not the corporations or the elites. I just feel none of the choices right now is for the people. I don't understand why that would make me "hate LGBT people or migrants". It just doesn't make sense to me. The team mentality of the whole thing has gone too far in my opinion. And I don't understand why people get so heated up for groups that don't care about them at the end of the day.

I don't even think I'll be alive to see another election after the emergency one next month though. So it's too late for me to make any meaningful change. So I'm just trying to use my remaining time to leave a bit of a legacy as an artist and programmer. Even if I enjoy AI. One thing doesn't cancel the other. I do mostly analog art and even have been pretty excited to try new tools now that my hand works again (surgeries obliterated my hands for a while and they are permanently blue-ish and cold now, but I regained some mobility this month). AI is for me "that thing I wanted since I was a kid when scifi had AIs doing stuff" and not a replacement for my craft. Even if a machine can make it for me, for me the fun is in doing it.

In fact, that whole thing is also another can of worms. People can't seem to understand I can be an artist AND enjoy AI. The moment I mention AI people start assuming I flood the world with slop and want to destroy artists, then they ask for proof that I'm an artist, I show them my work (impossible for an AI to replicate because it's mostly analog except for game sprites, and even then the style matches too much with the analog stuff), they go "but if you can draw like this why do you use AI!?? You should hate it because it's against you" and they can't conceive that for me it's just fun to tinker with it and test what it can do for fun. Like I should immediately take an anti-AI stance BECAUSE I am an artist. The AI is not replacing me because for me art is a form of expression and doing it is its own reward. It's just fun. Both things are fun to me. I don't see why they are exclusive.

It's like there's no room for human nuance and contradictions anymore. You have to be in a neat little box or else you are a bad person so it's right to fight you and hurt you. It's "justified", you know. Even if they are completely wrong, they already passed judgement.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:06PM (#50096094)
Read my other comment in the thread. Why would I post a non-sincere comment on this anyway? My belief is that all of us, no matter our gender, religion, age or social standing, are prey for the political and "elite" class. And not only we aren't holding them accountable, we are fighting their fights for them in several fields of our lives in form of "political discourse".

My country has a very serious housing crisis, both the left and the right are contributing to it because both parties have multiple people who are "serial landlords" with several properties, so they only make laws that benefit the landlord. This is a known fact and there are huge protests ongoing about it to the point emergency elections have been called.

Yet, saying this simple stance just as I did now, that both of them are guilty, will have people call you an "ultra" or call you a conspiracy theorist, that you are a fence sitter, that you don't know what you are talking about, and so and so on. Like you have some ulterior motive or are a paid shill from the other side or making the logic leap to thinking you support the far-right for not choosing one of the two existing "teams". Everything has gone crazy.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:10PM (#50095336)
Sadly I can't raise a family. This January I got a pretty bad brush with death and got diagnosed with something pretty bad and I don't have a lot left. After 5 high-risk surgeries (because of the medication making me bleed too much) I finally regained some autonomy and can move again, but I can't have kids. My bloodline ends with me, and it's better this way because this is hereditary and gets worse every generation. My kids would die at ~20 if lucky, according to the doctors.

Even knowing this, people around me still called me all sorts of things for not having strong opinions on random political things or wars. How can I worry about that when I am going to die soon anyway? Got enough in my plate to think about global politics.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:03PM (#50095221)
You just proved my point.

"This is a bait comment". Shame on you.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:35PM (#50094780)
AI hasn't made a dent in my enjoyment of my hobbies and tech (the opposite, now I have more toys to play with than ever), but politics? Oh man, politics becoming the new religion has absolutely ruined pretty much everything for me.

I don't believe in politics. For me left and right are all *the same*. Just a bunch of megalomaniacs wanting to hog power for themselves. This extremely hot take has made people call me more names and costed me more relationships than if I went out and started screaming slurs in a crowded street. Because I am a "fence sitter" or whatever.

And I just can't handle it anymore, I just went full recluse. I don't go into social media anymore, I don't talk to anyone at a personal level anymore. Outside of some github issues and some comments here, I don't touch socials anymore. I am just overwhelmed by the level of vitriol and hate the new internet is based on.

I've been using Iosevka for years now, it's definitely one of my favorites. What I enjoy the most is that it's narrow, so I can cram more data per line.

I use both the standard/fixed versions and Aile and Etoile for UI.

Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:52PM (#50062033)
> 3. I think there's a certain amount of defensiveness from AI enthusiasts. They've enthusiastically adopted AI to a certain degree, so critique/skepticism of their choice is felt as a personal criticism.

Well, yeah, just today there was an article here on HN about Photoshop AI clones that claimed, with absolute conviction ("trust me bro"), that users of AI were pedophiles just because "AI bad". The anti-AI sentiment has gone so extreme that it's easy to feel judged just for enjoying tinkering with AI, specially when all sorts of weird claims are made towards your character just because internet arguments are serious business and "the other side is evil" and the hate and violence must be justified. "It's okay to attack them guys, they are pedophiles, nazis and fascists, so hurt them as much as possible without any guilt!" Even if you aren't doing any of the things they are complaining about with it.

Re:Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:49AM (#50052842)
Looks like a nerve was struck.

The clones may not be perfect, but now I'll be assuming every hate post is damage control. That's what happens when the arguments are so hyperbolic; Calling AI users pedophiles without proof is a surefire way to make me doubt YOUR argument because of how exhaustingly cliched and predictable it has become to do so.

Oh poor Adobe. They wanted to use AI to save money on employees and make charts go up, but it's being used against them instead. They opened Pandora's box but thought the evils contained within would only affect what they believe are lower castes. They forgot humanity can tame beasts. And they specially forgot nerds exist.

"You are supposed to be subjugated! You are all supposed to be stupid and inferior! Why are you building houses with the stones we throw at you???"

I am not crying any tears for them.

Re:Reasons to Dislike AI Coding on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:59AM (#49990528)
I like coding. You can take away my AWK and C, Bash and Go and Javascript (yes I even enjoy coding Javascript unironically, sue me. I like making self-contained HTML5 one-file-and-offline tools for fun) only from my cold, dead hands. But don't we get one of these articles like once a week at least? It's getting kind of tiresome.

Like, I get the idea, I really do, but is there a need to announce it to the winds so often? Is this a pride thing?

Re:Show HN: TinyAIArena watch AI agents battle it out on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:42PM (#49868940)
This amuses me greatly. Nice!

Although it'd be even funnier to have some sort of thing like Omega (1989 programming game) where their programming determines the outcome. Heck, if you don't do it I might, although I don't have any good server infrastructure to host it.

Re:First Shader from Zero in Godot 4 on Monday September 21, 2026 @11:13PM (#49796398)
Godot is great for sure. The animation system is a delight and the python-like gdscript is easy to use. I love it to bits.
Re:Attention is all you have on Monday September 21, 2026 @11:11PM (#49796389)
I tried it after seeing that link here and it's been really useful. I happened to find myself in the type of situation where I'd need such a system after a couple days and it managed to keep the (volatile) info I wanted. Good stuff!
Funny, I very much prefer Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier (specially the first, has more robots).

The atmosphere in Cross is really good yeah, but the plot and gameplay issues really hold it back. I can forgive it being a bad sequel (mean-spirited towards Trigger at times for some odd reason) or having a silly plot, but I can't forgive the wasted potential. Feels like the director lost interest once the Radical Dreamers portion was remade.

So many memorable tracks and setpieces...we had it good.
Cross does look very good, I can agree to that, but there are things that bother me severely besides the story, mostly how the gameplay is designed in a way where just smashing circle will win you any battle because Serge is ridiculously strong and mandatory. The element system is very interesting but outside THOSE TWO GUYS (you know who) and the final boss, you are never compelled to use it because the fights are so easy that it's just faster to have Serge cut everything to size. If you choose Glenn over Razzli (and if you choose Razzli you have to get Korcha) the game becomes even easier. And despite the huge roster of characters most of the times it's just more efficient to use Serge, Glenn and Kid/Fargo for stealing (if you want a 100% run).

Even if you go out of your way to use your favorite characters or try to use elements it just becomes slower but not harder. There's almost no reason to use the League of Extraordinary Accents. This game SCREAMS to have something like Lufia II's Ancient Cave where you can get some thrills with those mechanics. The fixed level system really works against it.

There's potential in there, but it feels like most of the mechanics shy away from using it.

Also, despite the music being great, the battles and boss battles reuse the same theme 99% of the time, which gets tiring fast. And the regular boss battle theme happens to be the worst track in all of the game (DU-DU! DUDUDUDU-DU-DU! pirori pirori pirori~ DU-DU! DUDUDUDU-DU-DU!)

But the worst part is the freaking dwarfs trying to give you the eco-friendly message about how humans are destroying the environment and whatnot...despite humans not even being industrialized in all of El Nido (except for those guys outside of time) and they say that while committing genocide against the fairies with heavy smog-spewing machinery and tanks. Like give me a break... Every human settlement in El Nido is comfy nature-friendly villages and you are giving me the talk while riding a freaking tank.

I don't want Chrono Cross-contamination in my trigger, thanks.

Chrono Cross is a very interesting game on its own but it's a terrible sequel that is remarkably spiteful to its senior. (The thing with FATE and Robo, the Porre thing, the fate of Crono and co., it's a terrible fanfic made canon).

Trigger only worked because of Toriyama gathering the all-star staff (look up the interview with Torishima giving the details). Cross was out of his hands and it shows.
