If you are manipulating files and processes, bash is a very natural and succint language to do so. Programs are much more elegant than a generic programming language.

Yeah I agree, maybe it's broscience but maybe it will spark something interesting and to me that's worth trying and sharing.

That said, to be honest I didn't read past the abstract as I don't have the time but cool idea :)

Hmm, this is hard to believe. It might be a selection bias, maybe Linux users are just more likely to answer these developer surveys, no?

Probably just benzodiazepines labeled "LSD off switch" to make money off the increasing interest in psychedelics.
Re:Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn on Thursday June 11, 2020 @07:51AM (#23487822)
I saw the same thing a while ago and deleted it. I got my first job in a different country easily without LinkedIn. I see no value in LinkedIn for job hunting, many of the ads are just links to different job boards or application forms that I have to fill out or upload my CV to anyway.

Ironically I created a LinkedIn again after starting this job, I think mostly to flex on my exciting new job and measuring myself against my peers from college, while some small part of me also thought it could be important for networking. If you really want to keep in touch with peers from college you will find a better and much more genuine way of doing so. If you want to network maybe it can be a useful tool but I'm not sure stroking each other's ego is the best way to do that.

Once again I was coming to the conclusion that it's a useless and pointless platform (like most social networks, but that's another topic). My feed right now is nothing but cringe memes, humblebrags, and weird flexing. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I think I will delete it for real this time.

Re:Ask HN: Who is the best hacker of all time? on Tuesday May 12, 2020 @06:33AM (#23152516)
Very ambiguous question indeed for a community called "Hacker News" that targets a wide range of topics in technology and science, any of which can easily be considered "hacking".
Most people intentionally stream movies illegally. The moral aspect of breaking the law is not a very strong argument here.

I think the bigger moral issue with buying street drugs is that you are essentially funding organized crime.

I like this.

That's true. Presumably this is for extreme cases when you really need that extra bit of performance.

Perhaps HTML could have been better designed with performance in mind. Every tag you open (i.e. <foo>) you're supposed to close (i.e. </foo>) which is quite redundant in terms of bytes when you think about it. It is easy to imagine markup languages that minimize the number of bytes the client has to transfer.

It's explained.

> For file size optimization and scannability purposes

Omitting tags means less transfered bytes means faster websites. If the browser can forgivingly parse HTML like this, why not take advantage of it?

Of course, it doesn't sit well with me either. This'll take some time to digest, but it is interesting to consider.

Re:Linux distros without systemd on Monday May 20, 2019 @10:47AM (#19960840)
Interesting. So what use cases is Docker good for? Why is it so popular if systemd suffices?

What? In his current situation, if he zones out, he can produce erroneously transcribed data too. What's your point?
Probably. But maybe he'll get a kick out of modeling and automating it. Challenging his intellect seems to be the key point here.
He can use it such that the model's predictions are still manually verified by him before actually submitting them or whatever. Seems pretty harmless to me.
Totally get the social network stuff. But I'm curious how (or if) you consume media like movies and music if you don't use Netflix or Spotify? What did you mean there?
What are the others?
Re:Ask HN: How do you organize your home directory? on Friday September 14, 2018 @11:06AM (#17987697)
Very smart use of /tmp
Re:How to write X in both Python 3 and JavaScript on Friday September 14, 2018 @10:53AM (#17987586)
The value is in finding what is the most idiomatic way to do something in either language. For example if you're coming from Python and you're used to sum() it is useful to check this reference for the most idiomatic way to do it in JavaScript before doing it by hand with anonymous functions and reduce or looping through the list (as is the case unfortunately).
