Re:Bear turns 10, and it still feels like day one on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @11:47AM (#50354366)
I thought this was about https://www.bearblog.dev/
I think the book is seen more of as a complementary thing to the teacher, not something you're expected to read and understand on your own (unless you're really smart). They give you the cold hard theory, exercises with little explanation and wish you off after that.

I'm from Eastern Europe and studied a bit of math in undergrad and I referenced mostly from American books as everything else was just terrible to learn from. I even read a portion of Spivaks Calculus, which was difficult but great.

>250k trees seems like a lot from you looking out your window. From the perspective of trees we cut down every year (that we account for) it is close to a rounding error.

Because there's a bigger bad the smaller bad is totally fine and nobody should care?

And it seems it was 400k in total :

"In addition to the 250,000 trees felled at Muhos, Annala estimates that an additional 150,000 trees were felled at Otanmäki"

I don't care how sick our society is to normalize cutting 400k trees for data centers. It's wrong.

"Around 1 in 10 Japanese people reach their 30s without ever having had sex"

I actually assumed it's way more. Interesting.

Pretty much. Porn is also getting better and more varied, filling more niches people have. And by porn I don't mean the things you only see on pornhub and from professional studios. Anything that gets you off.

Have you guys seen how beautiful some of the women in Kpop are? Not only that, but they are also idols, meaning they have a strong presence on social media (post pictures, shorts), appear on variety shows, interact with fans through all sorts of fanmeets, online services and so on... They make fans feel like they have a relationship with them. After an event/concert you can usually easily find 4K fancams of the idol. They fill that gap both emotionally and sexually as they're really lovely girls. Japan also has a strong idol culture, although it's not as popular as Korea's internationally.

Then there's things like onlyfans, live-streamers and so on... Of course people are having less sex. On top of what you said of people just generally choosing to interact less because of the amount of digital entertainment. 50 years ago if you didn't get of your house the most entertainment you would have is probably books or TV, situation is wildly different these days. With AI probably gonna get even worse.

All that said, I don't think it's necessarily bad. But for future generations human interaction won't be the default anymore. They will have toto re-discover the value of that interaction.

Re:Gemini ending free use of Flash and Pro models on Saturday October 03, 2026 @06:32AM (#49942980)
I'm always amazed how entitled people are these days for free stuff. That being said, it does show costs are piling up for these AI companies if even Google is restricting free access to a relatively smaller model amid the AI hype train. Good!
Re:Ask HN: What default model do you use and why? on Saturday September 12, 2026 @11:32AM (#49673369)
Qwen 3.8 flash-next or Gemma 26B because I care about responsible and sustainable usage of LLM's.

I hope you also know they're using Yandex as one of their indexes.

Uruky is the way. 2x cheaper also.

Re:The humanoid robots cleaning homes for $30 an hour on Thursday September 03, 2026 @03:30AM (#49546965)
More novelty and marketing than anything useful. Anyone who has done any cleaning will most likely agree.
The moment something becomes a clear signal for brilliance, it immediately stops being useful as it will be imitated.

I don't understand why they have this option. Why would anyone toggle this on?
Re:XCancel and Nitter are receiving C&D letters from XCorp on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @07:05AM (#49446906)
Twitter has gone from relatively open to instagram / facebook level of closedness where I can't even share a video with my friends because it asks them to log in. I had to rely on nitter and xcancel for that... Now that no longer works either

I have one niche that I use twitter for. If it wasn't for that - would have deleted my account long time ago. Things like this push me towards that direction, though.

It's been a while since I last used YouTube Premium. But don't you get a small white indicator for "promotions" on the video bar? I thought this was a YouTube premium thing?
Re:How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @02:15AM (#49341959)
It feels restrictive, especially since it’s part of a broader pattern of limiting user freedom on platforms. For instance, on PC you can't simply right click on a video and save it on bluesky. They add some frontend bullshit to prevent you from doing that. On "new" Reddit I remember when you saved an image it would always have a watermark on it. On PC, you can't preview the raw image/video either. On Instagram you can't save images at all easily. Cant view content without being logged in, etc.. Now contrast this with platforms like Mastodon where I can do whatever I want with the uploaded media there and there are barely any such restrictions.
Re:old.reddit.com Now Requires a Login on Monday August 17, 2026 @03:43PM (#49336531)
Strange... I don't ever recall ever coming across an image linking somewhere outside of lemmy. Most people just upload images directly into their instance when creating posts.

In general never felt like I saw some dodgy link or anything nefarious

Re:old.reddit.com Now Requires a Login on Monday August 17, 2026 @03:26AM (#49327473)
Nope, I can see them just fine without any account. Not sure what the problem might be on your side. They're in the same place as on HN.

Lemmy (part of of fediverse), HN, Tildes, Lobste.rs.

Re:Qwen3.8-27B on Friday August 14, 2026 @01:49PM (#49302189)
Thanks! I don't have any knowledge of running models locally.

I assume it would not be able to handle an unquantized Qwen3.6-35B or is it irrelevant as you almost always would want to run a quantized version of the model on consumer hardware?

Re:Qwen3.8-27B on Friday August 14, 2026 @12:44PM (#49301227)
Mind sharing your laptops specs? Just interested to see what is needed to locally run Qwen3.6-35B-A3B
I see! Thanks.
Kinda was expecting to see Gemma 4 26B in benchmark comparisons :(
Re:Mistral OCR 4.1 on Friday August 14, 2026 @03:26AM (#49295631)
> Imagine a world where only one country has AGI/ASI.

You've fallen for the hype. The only way these AI companies can justify their bullshit worth and burn of capital is by promising a magical AGI. It's just marketing and it is still unclear if LLM's will ever be profitable.

If they won't - then EU is doing the right thing laying low.

> Or a world where Europe only gets access to frontier models 6 months later.

What a calamity!

Yep, B12 is a solved issue. It's pretty cheap to supplement.

I do want to mention that you do also have to look out to get enough of : Omega 3, Calcium, Iodine, Iron, Selenium, Protein.

Takes a bit of work at the start to adapt but it's very doable, and it's not like Omnivores don't have comparable deficiencies from not eating enough plants and fruit. Not to mention other problems that come with eating animal products...

I only supplement with Omega 3, Vitamin D, B12, Iodine (although sometimes I go for wakame). Have been on a plant-based diet for around 4 years now, feeling healthy.

Re:Why Normal People Aren't Using AI Agents on Sunday August 09, 2026 @03:19PM (#49234702)
Personally, I don't use them because I feel they're: unsustainable (burn through too many tokens), over-complicated, have privacy/security problems and creating an unhealthy reliance on them to do basic stuff.
This is hilarious. How obvious can they be ? Suddenly every LLM is a hacking genius
The thing is... It's not even reported on the news here (Lithuania).

Just now I scrolled through our most popular news sites. 0 mentions. Wasn't on TV either.

The vast majority of the population didn't even have a clue that the vote was happening.

I checked the top 5 most popular local news sites. There was one article about chat control in April and then 2 more from 2025. That's it.

Imagine an issue as big as this and it's not even reported. Yeah I don't feel confident about the future at all.
