Worse yet, there are a number of these institutions!

This is a dumb thing that HN does, certain words get stripped from titles. You can edit them back in but submitters either don't know that or just don't bother.
It's not like 1984 has a feel-good ending that's like "yes, fight the power, you will be successful and not ruin your own life quixotically."

I do think there is value in fighting the power... but 1984 is not a book that depicts such a choice working out well.

I think you actually achieved art project quite well with the amount of the concept that you completed, mainly because this writeup is hilarious.
Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @02:50PM (#50010256)
The right policy response would be telling the firms running these programs to get fucked if they can't successfully operate while paying staff the prevailing wage that local Americans would accept.
While it is certainly now quicker and cheaper to do this, it is not clear that maintaining a copycat app as an ongoing concern has much more business value than it ever has. Take Photoshop. Pixelmator existed (acquired by Apple eventually). Photopea is still independent. What else... Sketch? Figma and Canva for the "unicorn startup" category. Procreate serving a different chunk of users. Is there room for many more new entrants in this category to gain significant marketshare? Is the ability to dupe Photoshop the actual blocker?
Re:Goodbye Google on Friday September 25, 2026 @02:51PM (#49848433)
The Book of Job addresses this. Basically, it is God's prerogative to do whatever He wants with us. You don't have to like it, but He is still in charge.

"just as easily" — hmm, no, I think not
> It is a very deeply embedded assumption that women are primary parents.

Because this is typically true, even in cases where both parents work.

It's projection on your part. The general public (excluding the "very online" subset thereof) is barely even aware of mass surveillance.
Re:Mark Cuban: Why US hospitals "don't know their costs" on Thursday September 03, 2026 @02:15PM (#49554236)
> treat anyone who comes through the door for anything

nitpick, but it's anything imminently life-threatening (mas o menos), not anything

like if you show up in the ER with burgeoning cancer they won't provision chemo

I echo this. It is not clear to me what the actual difference is.
Re:How I Design with AI on Friday August 28, 2026 @06:48PM (#49485167)
Yes, as the article says:

> This should be very familiar because agents do exactly the same thing in code and plans. They love belt-and-suspenders, wrapping an extra try-catch or re-implementing the same utility over and over.

Yeah that one got my hackles up. The idea that America should not be run for the benefit of its citizens is uhhhh saying the quiet part out loud, I guess.
Thank you for sharing his memory with us.
Re:Why some US restaurants are banning tips on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @02:17PM (#49438283)
Huh. I wish this was the norm in my area, so I didn't have to wait around for the check once I finish eating.
The question is actually how do people get away with avoiding accountability for their actions?

Red Queen's race. It comes up a lot in marketing.
That is devastating. How are you doing?
Re:One Oakland police officer made $490k in overtime on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @01:43PM (#49364697)
It's both. OPD is dramatically under-staffed, and also trash. Needs a complete overhaul.
He's funny as hell. I don't like him as a politician but he's an extremely effective showman.
I didn't even know AWS had in-house models, that's how seldom they are mentioned.
Sidetracked by this blog being on Medium, I feel like I jumped back in time 5 years.
You are right, except: "solutionism will fail. Magic technology will not come to save us."

You just can't know this. It might be true. But it might not. That's the thing about the future, it is fundamentally alien.

Women and men are not judged according to the same standards. We're not super sexually dimorphic as a species, but certainly enough to matter in terms of evolved social responses.

Aw man, since you're sharing this on HN, you gotta cover California!
