https://fakeupdate.net is a good one: fake windows update screens. Successful head-scratching a few times!
Re:Exploring and having fun with rotary telephones on Sunday December 01, 2024 @07:33AM (#42288118)
Similar in Norway. One source of frequent misdiallings were from housewives dusting off the rotary phone, accidentally dialling 111.
Now that you mention it, I remember reading through the entire first script of of Alien from 1976[1], which was really cool. I now feel an urge to re-experience that.

I wonder if Michael Jackson would have even more success with his beer guides if he chose a pseudonym. https://www.beerbooks.com/cgi/ps4.cgi?action=enter&thispage=...

Re:Vivaldi integrates Mastodon in its desktop browser on Wednesday December 07, 2022 @10:31AM (#33895491)
I like Ungoogled Chromium: https://ungoogled-software.github.io/ungoogled-chromium-bina...

At least for testing, I use Firefox as my daily driver.

Re:uBlock Origin becomes top addon on Firefox on Friday March 11, 2022 @11:23AM (#30641824)
I use uBlacklist, and I get a "block this site" option on every Google result. Worth a try, I hope it's legit.
Re:I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months on Wednesday January 05, 2022 @04:11PM (#29814993)
Only if you worked for 10 years in the same company. 1 month is the regular for <5 years tenure. However, the employee may actually demand 3 months.
Re:LastPass users warned their master passwords are compromised on Tuesday December 28, 2021 @03:14PM (#29717546)
This used to be a problem for me too, but later versions of Keepass happily syncs any conflicting databases. I use Syncthing to share my database.
Let me push this again: Chrome, sans Google. My main browser is Firefox, but this will do in the few cases I "need" Chrome.

Foobar 2000 has served me really well for any local audio file.

It does support multiple accounts, at least since recently.
You might be interested to know that Another World was not Eric Chahi's first game to implement a VM. Infernal Runner (Amstrad CPC, 1985) was recently reverse-engineered to be playable in the browser. Some details and source: https://github.com/cyxx/infernal_js

Novel and inspiring. Thank you!
Re:Demoscene accepted as UNESCO cultural heritage in Germany on Saturday March 20, 2021 @12:19PM (#26524135)
Oh, how I envied those PO Boxes you guys got down in Europe - Up north, it was practically impossible to get one of those for non-businesses, and especially a no-go for broke teenagers!
Re:Daft Punk Break Up on Monday February 22, 2021 @12:23PM (#26227192)
Ooh. Thanks for this! RAM is my favourite, and this really appeals to me. May I recommend back; Betamaxx has a wonderful 80s nostalgic sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB5mRTkJmFA

Re:Can developer productivity be measured? on Friday December 11, 2020 @09:12AM (#25385950)
Nice, I call dibs on the low hanging fruits!
No, I haven't. Thanks for the tip! I'm hoping for something that would mimic Safari, as Apple has made things really difficult for non-mac devs.
I also switched years ago and haven't looked back. FF is fast, solid. However, I too keep Chromium for development. But I use the Ungoogled version (I always plug it, but have no stakes in it): https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium

Does anyone know a Webkit browser that runs on Win - preferably with some kind of debugger?

Re:How does a gas pump know to shut itself off? (1981) on Saturday October 10, 2020 @04:11PM (#24741522)
Haha, same happened to me in Spain two years ago. I stood there minding my own business like a doof until someone on the other pump were like, "Yo!! Watch out". Wasn't much, but still surprising.
Re:Ask HN: Is there any alternative to Dropbox? on Friday October 09, 2020 @02:15AM (#24727326)
Syncthing https://syncthing.net - I replaced Dropbox with it, no complaints so far.
I understand your point of view. I use Firefox exclusively in private. But I need to support Chrome in development, and Ungoogled Chromium is a good alternative for me - it's neither Google nor Microsoft. Most of us do live in capitalist societies, and therefore, I think, we have no other choice than to have to use it's tools to try to improve them.
I've found Ungoogled Chromium very satisfying lately. https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium
Re:Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life on Saturday August 22, 2020 @04:34PM (#24247058)
You can !g google in DDG when you need to. I often have to do, and hopefully DDG picks this up and improves their search.
Re:Game Programming Patterns: Event Queue (2014) on Friday August 21, 2020 @02:31PM (#24237563)
Many realtime online games use the same techniques today. For a very understandable walkthrough of the concept, I recommend Gabriel Gambretta's excellent 4 part series: https://gabrielgambetta.com/client-server-game-architecture....
Then use Chromium without goggle: https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium

Stop the madness

Isn't i.nu a little narrower, at least?
